The next GPCA Plenary is rapidly approaching and it's time to pull out all of the stops in our planning phase. This plenary is scheduled to take place December 9th-11th on the beautiful UC Davis campus in the heart of the Central Region. As some of you may recall, the Yolo Greens and our region made a joint offer to host a plenary at UC Davis last September. At that time, the Coordinating Committee decided to hold a Green Gathering in Oakland instead and to give us the next plenary in December. Now, it's our turn to shine. A host committee has already taken shape here in Yolo but we still need additional help from others in the region. Most of all we're going to need help with staffing during the weekend events. Please contact Wilson Shealy at wtshealy at greens.org or 530- 758-0844 if you can lend us a hand during the plenary or would like to help with the preparations. Together, we can make this the most enjoyable and smoothest-running General Assembly meeting in recent memory. Thanks, Wilson Shealy Plenary Host Committee Contact Central Region At-Large Alt **Please forward this communique to others in your county.** From dianasum at directcon.net Sat Nov 12 09:27:10 2005 From: dianasum at directcon.net (Diana Stauffer) Date: Sat, 12 Nov 2005 09:27:10 -0800 Subject: [GP-Eldorado-n] Fw: An important Coalition Meeting next Wed. Hello All! As our main focus for the coming months is to DUMP DOOLITTLE, we felt it was important to meet and hear from all of the candidates running against him. To date, we have had as our guests Mike Holmes and Charles Brown. Next Wednesday a third candidate, Lisa Rea, will be our guest. It is important that we meet and consider all of the candidates wanting to represent us. You can learn more about Lisa by going to her website www.reaforcongress.com. Then the idea is to take a holiday break from meetings and come back in January to plan our next action. The whole Bush & gang disaster(s) has created a "perfect storm" of opportunity for making some major changes like removing Doolittle. He is a lot more vulnerable now than he was 6 months ago...he just hasn't realized it yet. A hearfelt thanks to all of you who helped out prior to Tuesday's election. It feels good to win! We hope to see you next Wednesday if not before. The League of Women Voters of El Dorado County is beginning a study on Energy, including all aspects of the subject as it relates to California, including infrastructure, politics, global climate change, water, mechanics, sources, etc. A big job! The last statewide energy study was done in 1980, so it's important to bring out a new vision. The League in our County is very progressive! This would be a good opportunity for anyone interested to volunteer to join one of the subcommittees taking a section of the study. (You do not have to be a member of the League to do so!) Just coincidentally, I happen to be chairing the sections on Water and Energy, and Global Climate Change. Some of you know Paula Lee, who is very active with electoral reform in the Greens and a board member of CA for Electoral Reform, and lobbies for IRV in Sacramento. She is chairing the sections on The Role of the Legislature and Regulations and Markets. As you can see, these are large subjects, and we need more volunteers! Please volunteer for this worthwhile project! My two sections will be meeting in Camino and Paula's I think in Placerville. The project must be completed by the March meeting and our summaries submitted to the state League. It will involve some reading and a bit of research, and possibly half a dozen meetings. Since the Greens have been so heavily impacted by our losses on the County Council this last year, we are hoping to work in alliance with other groups so that we can increase our effectiveness. This is one such opportunity; I hope you will take it! Call me at 530-642-1162 if you would like to discuss possibly helping. By the way, NOW is the time to begin thinking about running for County Council, too! Call or email Michael Borenstein or me--or call the Election Dept.-- for information on how to do it; it is not hard! Thanks to Chris Spear for stepping forward to fill an appointed Council seat! His wife, "Sis", attracted international attention as her efforts in building a team of Muslim, Jewish, and Christian friends at home and in the Middle East, created the conditions for Jerry's escape, after eleven and a half months in captivity. Sis' book about those events, Beirut Diary, was later made into an ABC-TV docudrama, Held Hostage. Following that experience, Jerry and Sis decided to dedicate their lives to peacemaking in the Middle East through non-violent work and witness. 20 years later, Dr. Lucille (Sis) Levin is an internationally known peace educator and certified professional mediator, and Jerry is working as a full time volunteer with Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT). Although Birmingham, Alabama is still their home (they now have 5 children and 11 grandchildren,) they have spent the past four years in Palestine --except in early 2003, when they led a CPT delegation into Baghdad as the U. S. invasion of Iraq began. They were there throughout many of the bombings of the Iraqi capital, and several weeks of its subsequent occupation. Jerry is part of CPT in Hebron, and Sis is a full time volunteer in Palestinian schools and peace-building organizations, assisting teachers and young adults to teach peace. They will present photos and stories of their experiences with courageous nonviolence to create a more stable peacemaking environment, in the Holy Land and elsewhere. There will be no charge, but a free-will offering will be received. The first $300, the Levin's normal honorarium, will be given to their nonprofit support agency, "Every Church a Peace Church," and funds beyond that will go to support their work in Hebron and Bethlehem. Also, copies of Jerry's latest book, West Bank Diary, will be available. Please consider joining us for this extraordinary opportunity to hear and meet such inspiring individuals.
