“Community Forum on Torture” on Friday night, March 24<SUP>th</SUP>.
The event will take place from <st2:time w:st="on" Minute="00"
Hour="19"><U1:TIME hour="19" minute="0">7:00pm</st2:time></U1:TIME> until
<st2:time w:st="on" Minute="30" Hour="21"><U1:TIME hour="21"
minute="30">9:30pm</st2:time></U1:TIME> in the Student Union Bldg. on the CSUS
campus (Forest Suite). The event is free. Three excellent speakers are
scheduled and there will be information about getting involved in local efforts

<U1:CITY><U1:PLACE>Guantanamo</U1:PLACE></U1:CITY> and secret prisons in
<U1:PLACE>Eastern Europe</U1:PLACE> lend a particular urgency to the campaign to
stop torture. Amnesty International's goal is to raise community
consciousness about this severe human rights crisis and spread the word that
torture is illegal, immoral and ineffective.

w:st="on">Pitts</st1:Sn> is a former Board Chairman of Amnesty International
USA. He is an international attorney, and law educator. Formerly
Chief Legal Officer of Nokia, Inc. and partner at a major global law firm, he
is a Lecturer in Law at
<U1:PLACE><U1:PLACENAME>Stanford</U1:PLACENAME><U1:PLACETYPE>
University</U1:PLACETYPE></U1:PLACE>, has taught at other law schools and
universities, and is a frequent speaker, writer, and commentator on ethical
globalization, human rights, and foreign affairs. His testimony last
year before congressional committees concerning torture and the Patriot Act
drew international attention. <o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT>

face="Times New Roman" size=3><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 12pt">Nestor Fantini is
an Argentine educator and journalist who resides in
<U1:STATE><U1:PLACE>California</U1:PLACE></U1:STATE>. In the 1970's, Fantini
was arrested, tortured and held by the military over the course of four years.
Those were the days of the infamous Argentinean Dirty War when about 30,000
men, women and children "disappeared". Adopted as a Prisoner of Conscience by
Amnesty International, Fantini was finally released on <st2:date w:st="on"
Year="1979" Day="14" Month="7" ls="trans"><U1:DATE month="7" day="14"
year="1979">July 14, 1979</st2:date></U1:DATE>. A key factor in Fantini's
release was the hard work of the members of an Amnesty
International group from <U1:PLACE><U1:CITY>Austin</U1:CITY>,<U1:STATE>
Texas</U1:STATE></U1:PLACE>. <o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT>

w:st="on"><FONT face="Times New Roman" size=3><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 12pt">Dr.</SPAN></FONT></st1:title> <st1:title
w:st="on">Maimul Ahsan Khan</st1:title> has taught law at U. C. Davis and
<st2:PersonName w:st="on"><st1:GivenName w:st="on">U.C.</st1:GivenName>
<st1:Sn w:st="on">Berkeley</st1:Sn></st2:PersonName> on a temporary fellowship
for foreign scholars who risk persecution in their home countries. He was
forced to leave
<U1:COUNTRY-REGION><U1:PLACE>Bangladesh</U1:PLACE></U1:COUNTRY-REGION> as a
result of his outspoken criticism of government policy . He is a
constitutional scholar with expertise ranging from human rights to Muslim
legal issues and the law and politics of the <U1:PLACE>Middle East</U1:PLACE>.
Khan is author of Human Rights in the Muslim World - Fundamentalism,
Constitutionalism, and International Politics. <o:p></o:p></LI></UL>

centers around the world; establish whether such acts violate relevant federal
statutes and international law; and to recommend safeguards to prevent further
