>
>
> LOOKING FOR 1000
GRANDMOTHERS TO CROSS THE LINE
> November 17-19,
2006
> At the School of the Americas/WHISC, Ft.
Benning,
> GA
> Most of you know that the School of the
Americas
> at Fort Benning, Georgia, is the place where Latin
>
American soldiers are trained by the U.S. military
> in tactics that have
resulted in assassination,
> kidnapping, torture, and repression of their
own
> people. Graduates of the SOA (also known as
> WHISCÑWestern
Hemisphere Institute for Security
> Cooperation) have been responsible for
the murder of
> Archbishop Oscar Romero and six Jesuits, their
>
housekeeper, and her daughter, the massacre of the
> entire village of El
Mozote in El Salvador, and
> countless other acts of violence in Central
America.
> Currently, the largest group of trainees is coming
> from
Colombia, which is rapidly becoming the next El
> Salvador. The SOA
represents all that we wish to
> fight against and change in our nation.
It goes
> against everything we, as women, want for our
> families
and our world.
>
> My name is Cathy
Webster. I live in Chico,
> California. Last November, one of the founders
of
> our local Peace & Justice Center, Helen Kinnee, died
> at
age 91 after a long life of working for peace. At
> her memorial service,
one of our young peace
> activists sang Holly Near's song, "A
Thousand
> Grandmothers." I was so inspired by this song, and
> by
the arrest that same month of another local
> grandmother, Dorothy Parker,
at School of the
> Americas, that an idea came to me: What if 1000
>
grandmothers from around America and the world were
> to take this song as
their rallying cry and march
> onto the grounds of the School of the
Americas this
> coming November with SOAWatch risking arrest in an
>
effort to shut down this training school for
>
terrorism?
>
> This summer HR1217, an
amendment to a bill that
> would cut Defense spending for the school and
thus
> effectively shut it down, was refused attachment to
> the
Foreign Operations Appropriations bill, even
> though eight other
attachments were accepted. But
> the effort to effect the closing of the
school
> continues unabated (see http://www.soawatch.org ).
>
> Attached are two sheets that can
be printed as a
> front side and a back side handout to be
reproduced
> and circulated.
>
> Please respond to athousandgrandmothers@yahoo.com
>
with your interest, ideas, and comments. If not us,
> who? If not now,
when? Grandmothers are rallying
> around the country to stand up for
peace; let's do
> the same at the SOA.
>
