Subject: [GPCA-CCWG] GPCA ELECTION REPORT: Greens retain Town Council Majority in Fairfax in November 8th elections

GPCA ELECTION REPORT:
Greens retain Town Council Majority in Fairfax in November 8th elections
reported by Mike Feinstein, as of 8am Wednesday, November 9th
----------------------------------------------------
Four California Greens ran in municipal elections on November 8th.
Two were elected to the Town Council in Fairfax (pop. 7,500) in Marin
County - incumbent Larry Bragman (http://www.bragmanforfairfax.com/)
and first time candidate Ryan O'Neil (http://ryanforfairfax.com/).
Bragman and O'Neil join fellow Green incumbent Pam Hartwell-Herrero
(http://www.town-of-fairfax.org/html/bio_hartwell-herrero.html
) to retain the Green majority on the five-member Town Council there,
showing that Fairfax voters believe that Greens have good ideas and
can govern.
Fairfax Greens first achieved a Town Council majority in 2009 when
Harwell-Herrero was elected and joined Bragman and Green Lew Tremaine
(http://www.town-of-fairfax.org/html/bio_tremaine.html
), who was first elected to the council first in 1999 and served from
1999-2011. Bragman was first elected in 2003 and was re-elected in 2007.
The Green majority in Fairfax is the third California city to have a
Green majority on its city or town council, joining Sebastopol in
Sonoma County from 2000 to 2008 and Arcata in Humboldt County, which
had the world's first Green majority on any legislative body between
1996 and 1998 and then again from 2000 to 2002.
Elsewhere Benecia Planning Commissioner Rick Ernst (http://benicia.patch.com/blog_posts/ernst-for-city-council-2011
) finished 4th of four candidates for two seats on the Benecia City
Council in Solano County and Terry Baum (http://terryjoanbaum.com/)
received 1,214 first rankings (10th/15) in San Francisco's Ranked
Choice Voting election for Mayor. Ranked Choice Voting (http://www.fairvote.org/instant-runoff-voting
) is an electoral reform that Greens support, where voters are able to
rank their choices, rather than being compelled to express their
preferences for only one candidate.
Ranked Choice Voting was first approved by San Francisco voters for
use in San Francisco in 2004 after the work of by San Francisco Green
Supervisor Matt Gonzalez, Green electoral reform leader Steve Hill and
many others helped get it on the ballot and educate the city upon its
benefits compared to traditional voting systems where voters can only
cast their preferences for one candidate. Since its adoption in San
Francisco (http://sfelections.org/demo/), it has spread to other
California cities including Oakland and Berkeley (http://www.fairvote.org/ranked-choice-voting-in-bay-area-elections
).
