From alexshantz at gmail.com Tue Nov 11 16:15:46 2014 From: alexshantz at gmail.com (Alex Shantz) Date: Tue, 11 Nov 2014 16:15:46 -0800 Subject: [officeholders] Welcome to California Green Officeholders Network/Info About Next GA/Introductions Message-ID: Hello Green Party officeholders, First, congratulations to those of you who recently won their seats in local races this November. And, welcome everyone to the California Green Officeholders Network. The purpose of this network is to facilitate present and past California Green officeholders to share policy perspectives and governing experience with each other, and the rest of the party. As Green officeholders, our role in the party is vital. We are in a position to demonstrate to the pundits, other elected officeholders, the boarder electorate, and everyone else that Greens can govern credibly and effectively. We have the unique ability to prove that Green public policies work and can help solve the largest social and political problems in our communities. And, we are the ones, through our tirelessly work as public servants, that can make the best case for comprehensive electoral reform. After all, if we as Greens are able to govern effectively on a local level, why should our political system virtually exclude us from higher office.... I wanted to make sure everyone was aware that the next Green Party of California (GPCA) General Assembly will occur in Monterey from January 24th-25th. The General Assembly is the primary decision-making body of the GPCA and consists of delegates from each active county organization recognized by the GPCA. The General Assembly agenda will include an item to discuss electoral strategy for moving our party forward. The format is still being worked out, but we plan on inviting some of our Green officeholders to participate in this electoral strategy discussion. Please, keep this in mind and please consider attending. Stay tuned for more details. More information about the General Assembly: http://www.cagreens.org/ga/2015-01 Lastly, feel free to introduce yourselves to everyone. Who are you? What office do you hold? Any experiences or stories you want to share as an officeholder or candidate for office? I look forward to getting to know all of you and creating a vibrant network! Cal Am hosted two busses. Their clientele were issued matching sky blue shirts with yellow lettering "Vote Yes!" and little signs that said the same thing that the bus people could wave around on popsicle sticks. They announced the public hearing by saying that the elected would lead the way and... they called Supervisor Potter and each of the names of the male Mayors Burnett (who waved around a guest commentary by Mayor Delgado in the Herald), Rubio, and Kampe. I was in the audience as a female-elected but since I do not support the slant wells without proper environmental review as required by CEQA, I was not called until the last before lunch, the order in which my request to speak had been submitted. Paul Bruno, the former President of the Monterey County Republican Central Committee who was recently fined over $50,000 by the Fair Political Practices Commission for illegal financial reporting, spent his two minutes slamming Marina and finished suggesting that adult supervision would be needed. Marina Resident Jay Fagan mentioned that all Marina Electeds are crazy. He didn't vote for them but in his opinion, there are just too many attorneys on the Marina City Council and he was able to count them all on one hand. Marina's City Manager, Marina Coast Water District General Manager, and the attorneys for both organizations spoke intelligently, rationally and reasonably. George Riley of Public Water Now also did an excellent job. Former Monterey County Supervisor Del Piero, LAFCO boardmember Darrington, and the Ag Land Trust attorney also made excellent comments. Marina Planning Commissioner Margaret Davis spoke about her concern for the aquifers. Monterey Peninsula College Trustee Copperknoll mentioned that she too is elected and her viewpoint represented residents of Marina. All of these people spoke about their concerns for the lack of environmental review that has no measure of long term impacts or discussion about other subsurface intake technology other than a production sized slant well that does not currently successfully exist any place in the world. I mentioned being elected and not having Board approval would speak as a resident. I said the Board had not approved my participation in the hearing and I was certain that the City Councils of each of the Mayors had not approved their participation at the Coastal Commission hearing. I stated that I knew for certain Mayor Delgado did not have his Council's approval to write that guest commentary that did not support his Council's decision but declared his own opinion and that he represents Marina. Green Party Mayor Delgado had voted with one other councilmember to approve the Coastal Development Permit for the experimental Slant Well intake for Cal Am. Although the Water District had clearly stated their concerns for the aquifer and future of the Water District, Green Party Mayor Delgado voted to approve it, said he was doing it for the good of the Water District, and then wrote a commentary supporting his view for the Herald. After repeatedly asking public to keep their comments short so that the Commissioners could go to their field trip scheduled at 2 pm, the commission moved for approval of the appeal and unanimously approved to over ride the Marina decision to follow CEQA law. There will be no further environmental review and construction is expected to begin on the experimental slant wells on Monday. It will be another first for Marina. I am organizing a Greens in Government panel January 24th at 7:30PM. The panel will take place at the Monterey College of Law in the Library. The Monterey College of Law is located at 100 Colonel Durham St, Seaside, CA 93955. So far, I have one officeholder confirmed to appear on the panel. I am trying to find at least three more people willing to participate. The panel will provide panelists an opportunity to share experiences about what it is like being a Green in local office. There will also be questions from the audience. The purpose of the panel is to increase understanding of how Greens can govern effectively at a local level thereby proving that the Green Party is a viable option for creating real political change. The panel will be taking place as part of the Green Party of California?s General Assembly in Monterey County. The General Assembly consists of delegates from active Green Party counties throughout the state and is the highest decision making body in the party. More information about the General Assembly is available here: http://www.cagreens.org/ga/2015-01 Please contact me if you would like to participate. At this point, I?m trying to get a sense of who all is interested. This will help myself, along with the agenda team, confirm the panelists. Please, let me know if you have any questions. 707 328 8654 Thank you, Alex Shantz Board of Trustees, St. Helena Unified School District, Napa County -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Have you contacted the local elected county council George Riley, Larry Parrish, Franklin Lambert, Eric Peterson and Luana Conley? Maybe the panel discussion topics could be defined to encourage office holders specifically, for example I would like to hear more about Richmond & Chevron and something more from places that have taken majority of the City Council or fundraising strategies for candidates who don't accept corporate campaign financing such as donations from Shea Homes or PAC money from business interests. And maybe office holders haven't made commitment to the January panel because we are still in recovery from campaign season.
