Santa Clara Co. To Conduct Homeless Census

(BCN) SAN JOSE As the nights get colder, Santa Clara County is trying
to get a count on the number of homeless people that are living in the
county, Margaret Gregg of the Affordable Housing Office said.

On Jan. 29 and 30, volunteers will take to the streets to count the
homeless people living both in shelters and on the streets.

The survey is mandated to take place every other year by the Department
of Housing and Urban Development as an attempt to ascertain numbers of
homeless people and to track fluctuations in the homeless population,
Gregg said.

Among the volunteers counting this year will be homeless people, Gregg
said.

“They know exactly where the encampments are and where to look,” said
Gregg.

The 2004 survey revealed there to be 4,868 homeless people in Santa
Clara County, including 240 people who belonged to entirely homeless
families.

The 2007 report is due out within a couple of months of the survey,
Gregg said.
