Friends,
Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi is
playing money politics with the socialism for the rich Farm Bill. The
bill will continue to provide pork for the huge corn, cotton and rice
farmers and will do little or nothing for the vegetable, fruit and nut
growers.
Great amounts of the corn grow will be used to produce ethanol while
most cotton and rice will be exported. In many cases the subsidized
exporters will under-sell small struggling farmers in countries that owe
great debts to the World Bank creditors. Also, the small family farms,
in most cases, are beneficial to the environment while the big corporate
farms are quite harmful to the environment and drive out small farmers
who can't compete with the behemoths. (Another example of "Ma and Pa
Capitalism" being canibalized by big corporations in the "free market"
system.
Oxfam America has urged its listed contributors to call their respective
House representatives to ask them to support the "Fairness Amendment,"
H.R. 2419, authored by Rep. Ron Kind (WI Dem.) and Rep. Jeff Flake (AZ
Repu). It will reduce trade-distorting, shift funds to feed hungry and
minority families and do much to protect the environment.
Much credit should be given to the S.F. Chronicle for today's lead
editorial that takes Pelosi to task for leading the charge for the
counter-productive Farm Bill.
Pelosi has also been keeping impeachment off the table for strictly
political reasons.
