It appears more and more that AARP's first priority is selling health 
insurance.  Secondly, it coddles "seniors."

Other than disconnecting with AARP, how can individuals counter its power?

Despicable.
Many of us members finally caught on when the infamous "doughnut
hole" showed up in the drug deal cut by AARP with big Pharma.
