Notably, he said, the policies "don't establish any criteria for whose computer can be searched." Customs Deputy Commissioner Jayson P. Ahern said the efforts "do not infringe on Americans' privacy." In a statement submitted to Feingold for a June hearing on the issue, he noted that the executive branch has long had "plenary authority to conduct routine searches and seizures at the border without probable cause or a warrant" to prevent drugs and other contraband from entering the country. ----------------- Gerry From j.m.doyle at sbcglobal.net Fri Aug 1 11:35:24 2008 From: j.m.doyle at sbcglobal.net (Jim Doyle) Date: Fri, 01 Aug 2008 11:35:24 -0700 Subject: [Sosfbay-discuss] picnic Message-ID: <4893576C.2090209@sbcglobal.net> Save the date - Saturday August 9-th * Coming in August: Green Party Picnic Saturday August 9-th 11 am to 4 pm Martin Murphy Junior Park in Sunnyvale 130 E. Overall, the Union of Concerned Scientists applauds the state for creating a comprehensive proposal that could create green jobs and clean up air pollution while at the same time reducing the pollution that causes global warming. However, we still have work to do to strengthen the final plan that is due out in October. We must send a clear message that California needs the most comprehensive, strongest possible set of clean energy, clean transportation, and other global warming policies! You can make a difference. CARB is holding a public workshop for the Bay Area in San Jose on Friday, August 8, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. You can have three minutes to speak to CARB staff directly. It's important that CARB hears from a variety of voices including business owners, green job seekers, health workers, union members, religious leaders, and other concerned citizens. We've included some sample talking points below that include UCS recommendations to improve the plan. If you would like help preparing for the meeting or going over the talking points, we are happy to talk with you by phone before the workshop. Click here to let us know you can attend the workshop on August 8. Thanks for your support. Sincerely, Erin Rogers California Outreach Coordinator Union of Concerned Scientists ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Talking Points for Global Warming Scoping Plan Hearings I want to thank CARB for producing the nation's most comprehensive plan to date for reducing the pollution that causes global warming. However, I urge CARB to strengthen parts of the plan that are weak. The scoping plan recommends that a third of our electricity come from renewable sources like wind and solar by 2020. I strongly urge you to keep this vital component in the final plan. (Click here for more information on the renewable electricity standard.) The scoping plan recommends that CARB consider a "Clean Car Discount" program (sometimes called a "feebates" program), for reducing global warming pollution from cars and trucks. Instead of just considering a Clean Car Discount, CARB should recommend implementing a Clean Car Discount program as one important part of the solution to reduce global warming pollution from our cars and trucks. (Click here for more information on the "Clean Car Discount" or feebates program.) While the scoping plan includes a cap and trade program--a market based plan to limit global warming pollution--it is currently far too lenient. For instance, it allows 100 percent of the emission reductions to come from offsets, so instead of reducing their own pollution, polluters can just meet the requirements by paying for pollution-reducing projects elsewhere. The use of offsets for compliance in a cap and trade system must be carefully limited to a very small fraction of required reductions. Offsets should never be used to comply with direct regulations, like the renewable energy or clean car standards. (Click here for more information on the cap and trade program.) The state's global warming plan should deter pollution and reward clean energy. A cap on pollution must require polluters to pay for their "allowances" based on how much they pollute, so that we can level the playing field and encourage cleaner sources of energy. Allowances should not be given away for free. (Click here for more information on cap and trade allowances.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Union of Concerned Scientists relies on individuals like you to support our research and advocacy. However, in many states around the country, Greens must petition every two years -- just so they can put the names of Green Party candidates on the ballot! Below are some upcoming state deadlines, along with the number of valid signatures required to achieve ballot access. At the recent annual meeting of the national Green Party, reports were made on how various state ballot access drives are doing, with an emphasis on Greens from states which already have ballot access traveling to neighboring states, to help them with their ballot access signature drives. However, none of California's neighboring states happen to need help with ballot access, so we are instead focusing on raising money to help out a dozen different states across the country. Because the deadlines in many of these states are rapidly approaching, WE NEED FOR YOU TO MAKE A FINANCIAL DONATION RIGHT AWAY! You can make an online credit card donation at this webpage: https://secure.democracyinaction.com/dia/organizations/Greens/shop/custom.jsp?donate_page_KEY=1922 or you can mail a check to: Green Party of the United States (GPUS), P.O. Box 57065, Washington, DC 20037-0065. (Please note that your are donating for ballot access). Then, after you donate, please reply back to this message, so we can keep track of how our fundraising drive is doing! PLEASE DONATE NOW! Please help our fellow Greens across the country with their time-urgent ballot access drives! Sincerely, Greg Jan, Coordinator, GPCA Delegation to GPUS Oakland, CA PS -- For reference, below are some upcoming state deadlines, along with the number of valid signatures required to achieve ballot access. Since it takes time to transfer funds to where it's most needed, we really do appreciate receiving your donation just as soon as is possible! Thank you! The Green Party supports it, but I still don't know what it is trying to solve. He did not really do a good job of selling this idea and showing what this can accomplish that current programs like Social Security, unemployment benefits, etc. is not already doing. Also, why would the wealthy get this $800 per month income too? Is there also cost of living adjustment, because I don't think it is possible to pay for a month's rent and food in Silicon Valley with $800 (or maybe it is and I am being classist). -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I note that there is no evidence he ever complained about the high volume or 'off topic' postings of the Alpha of his Faction, Jo Chamberlain or any of the other posters, despite the fact they made numerous such posts. Reserved his ire just for me. Council, its past time to reinstate my access to the regional list. Being high handedly removed from the list (just as I was away at our national nominating convention and trying to post news of the convention to those back home!!!), made it very difficult to promote the picnic and the turnout suffered. It's main purpose is for the county councils (and a few others) of San Mateo and Santa Clara to have a discussion channel for regional issues. So county councilors are encouraged to subscribe. The list info page is at http://lists.sonic.net/mailman/listinfo/sc-sm. It's a very low volume list (now that I've kicked Drew off). Regional issues are few and far between. So you'll see only a few postings each month, but they're important postings (usually). It's a closed list and the easiest way to subscribe is just respond this message and I'll add you. Andrea - I inadvertently added you already. Hope you don't mind. Date: Wed, 13 Aug 2008 14:55:22 GMT From: "Rachel Moss, Democracy for America" To: "Gerald Gras" Gerald - Some Democrats don't seem to know whose side they are on. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz represents a safe Democratic seat in South Florida. She's also the co-chair of the DCCC Red to Blue program -- whose mission is to elect more Democrats to the House. But she won't campaign against South Florida Republicans. In fact, she's repeatedly spouted lavish praise for Republican Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen instead of supporting the Democratic opponent: DFA-endorsed candidate Annette Taddeo. Just exactly whose side is Rep. Wasserman Schultz on? You always know whose side DFA is on: CONTRIBUTE Democratic Senator Daniel Inouye from Hawaii, the third-longest serving member of the Senate, is busy shuttling back and forth to Alaska where he is actively campaigning for his longtime buddy, the indicted Republican Senator, Ted Stevens. He's not campaigning for DFA-endorsed Democrat Mark Begich. Evidently building a filibuster proof majority in the Senate is not a priority. Whose side is Sen. Inouye on? You always know whose side DFA is on: CONTRIBUTE Rep. Kendrick Meek also represents a safe Democratic district in South Florida -- but he's not out there stumping for DFA-endorsed Democrat Joe Garcia. Instead he's holding campaign events with Republican extremist Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart. Whose side is Rep. Meek on? You always know whose side DFA is on: CONTRIBUTE If you thought these safe-seat Democrats were going to work hard to elect more Democrats this election, you were wrong. They are too busy out campaigning for their Republican buddies. There is a difference between bipartisanship and throwing your team under the bus. Our DFA-endorsed challengers have enough of an uphill battle against incumbents who have had years to fill their campaign coffers with money from lobbyists and Washington special interests. They already have the RNC smear machine working overtime against them. They don't need Beltway Democrats undermining them every step of the way. But you always know whose side Democracy for America is on. We fight for the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party. Make sure we have the resources to win and elect progressive Democrats everywhere. YOUR $25 WILL MAKE THE DIFFERENCE! Conyers is reviewing allegations that senior Bush Administration officials ordered the forgery and dissemination of false intelligence documents about Iraq. Conyers was on Democracy Now with Ron Suskind last Thursday Aug.14 and stated "I'm calling everybody back. We've got a huge amount of work to engage in." Everyone listening to him thought he meant he was calling the Judiciary Committee members back from recess to have a investigative hearing on the allegations. I certainly thought Conyers was saying that. I started to have my doubts about what Conyers meant when on Friday, the day after the Democracy Now program, one of our SVIC members spotted our own House Judiciary Committee member, Zoe Lofgren, at the San Jose Farmers Market. I was puzzled, if Conyers had called back the committee and Zoe is a member of the committee why was she still in San Jose on recess. I called Conyers office to find out what he was talking about on the Demoocracy Now program. What I found out was that the "everybody" he called back referred to the House Judiciary staff. I talked to one of the staff and was told it was the staff he called back from recess and they indeed are investigating the allegations. I was told that they are doing the preliminary investigation in order to have all the information for the Judiciary Committee members when they get back to Washington the first week of September. Once I got over my disappointment that the Judiciary Committee was not in session and investigating the allegations I then brightened up. Conyers having the Judiciary staff investigating the allegations actually is very promising. After all it was the Judiciary staff in 1974 that prepared the 65 page report on Presidential Impeachment, the report that played a major role in initiating impeachment against Nixon and Zoe Lofgren was a Judiciary staff member at the time and helped write the report. Please call John Conyers office and tell them you are pleased that the staff is investigating the allegations in Ron Suskind's book and that you look forward to the Judiciary Committee holding hearings on the investigations. In reviewing the arguments for and against Prop. 1, the "High Speed Rail Bond", we decided to change our position from "Yes, with reservations" to "No, with regrets". Most of the arguments for why we are now opposing Prop. 1 are summarized below. We are sorry we were not able to provide you with this info. earlier, but as you can imagine, we have been quite busy with not only all of the state propositions, but also with gathering info. and sending out questionnaires to candidates for some 32 local races which we will be covering in our Voter Guide, plus about a dozen local ballot measures. In any case though, please forward this write-up to Greens in your county, so that they might know of our new position and thinking about this proposition. (And especially if they will be attending this weekend's state plenary General Assembly meeting in Orange County, PLEASE FORWARD THEM THIS INFO RIGHT AWAY, so they can read it before that meeting, where it will be discussed!). Thanks very much, Greg Jan Oakland, CA No on Prop. 1, High Speed Rail boondoggle We all believe in attractive alternatives to driving, especially sleek electric trains designed in Europe, but the promises in Proposition 1 are simply too good to be true. The cogent reason for Greens to oppose the high-speed rail project is that it is a public works fraud scheme specifically designed to appeal to gullible environmentalists. If we vote for Proposition 1, as it is currently on the ballot, the only guarantee is that billions of dollars will be spent on engineering, land acquisition, demolition, and construction of part of a guideway. No actual track will be laid as the huge $10B bond is only a small portion of the total amount required! There is no guarantee that there ever will be a workable rail system, and under current law, no consequences for project managers if they waste every dime. The idea is apparently to start a very big hole in the ground, then come back and ask for more bucks. Federal funding is as imaginary as private investment. The firm which has been prime contractor for all work authorized to date by the High Speed Rail Authority is Parsons-Brinckerhoff, notorious for choosing the wrong concrete epoxy for the tunnel in Boston's way-out-of-control Big Dig that ballooned from in cost from $2 billion to $22 billion. The HS Rail Authority predicts an annual ridership of 117 million passengers on a 24-station line. As a reality check, France's most popular high-speed train, the TGV-Southeast carried only 18 million passengers in its 10th year in a country with a population twice that of California and already long habituated to traveling by train. It is simply unbelievable that California trains will outperform European routes! The Authority claims that the project will have no operating deficit, but the Legislative Analyst says that the operating cost would be about $1 billion annually, and suggests that some proportion of this would have to be covered by state subsidies (likely in the hundreds of millions annually). Where would the money for this subsidy come from? Probably from other public transit service statewide. The Rail Authority has been actively hyping the Merced County real estate market with statements about the "new California gold rush" and its selection of the Pacheco Route, a repeat of the UC Merced land scam with the same participants. The staff says they won't build a Los Banos station, but Schwarzenegger backer Angelo Tsakopoulos and his investor corporations have purchased 3500 acres of land within three miles of the proposed stop. What does he know that we don't know? Recent proposed changes to the initiative will spread the $10B more broadly among counties to make it more palatable to voters. That sounds exactly like a boondoggle to us. If this measure passes, we may NEVER get high speed rail due to the vast cost overruns and bad reputation that this project will inevitably create. Join many rail enthusiasts and vote NO on Prop. 1. DENVER, Colorado (CNN) ? Controversial former Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney is in Denver this week, but she isn?t exactly here to attend the Democratic National Convention. In fact we found her at a protest against US government detainment of ?political prisoners." These days McKinney is the Green Party nominee for President, and she?s blasting the Democrats in Congress for not cutting off funding to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. "I've been liberated from the values that I believe are the failed values of the Democratic party. I'm proud to be outside,? she said. Back in 1996, McKinney was not only on the inside of the Democratic convention in Chicago ? she was even one of the speakers. She praised then-President Bill Clinton, and lashed out at the Republican Party for its opposition to abortion. McKinney was well known on the Hill for her run-ins with everyone from the Anti-Defamation league to the Capitol police. But for the record, the protest she attended was peaceful and came off without a hitch. ___ 2. http://www.democracynow.org/2008/8/25/anti_war_protests_begin_in_denver Antiwar Activists Take to the Streets to "Defend Denver" by via Democracy Now Monday Aug 25th, 2008 4:59 PM Monday, August 25, 2008 :Democracy Now! correspondent Jeremy Scahill heads to the streets of Denver to report on day one of protests outside of the Democratic National Convention. Green Party presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney has also been in Denver since Sunday, and she spoke yesterday at the Mercury Caf?. McKinney spoke passionately to a capacity-plus crowd of supporters, and she wanted to make sure all of the Democrats downtown for the Democratic National Convention knew she was here. ?We must have an opposition party in this country, and the Green Party with over 200 elected officials on the local level can be that opposition, but we have to expand and broaden the Green Party to reflect the entire fabric of all of the communities that are in this country,? McKinney said. McKinney is a former United States Congresswoman who served as a Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993 to 2003, and from 2005 to 2007. McKinney joined the Green Party in September of 2007, leaving the Democratic Party on Youtube.com clip. McKinney said she has been in town to raise awareness for her party, not just to take away from the DNC. ?We have done a great job of reaching out to people of all diverse backgrounds, and we wanted to make sure that people understood that not only is Green Party a viable alternative, it is imperative,? McKinney said. During her speech, McKinney also spoke briefly about her party and her party?s politics on the issues of environmentalism, non-violence and social justice, and the large crowd of ?Greenies? went wild for her. When asked what she thought about the DNC, McKinney said: ?I am not there so I cannot comment on it. But Denver has proven itself to be very hospitable for those of us who choose to express ourselves and our dissent from the current political order.? McKinney was also asked what she would do if elected president, and she responded: ?We would instruct the Joint Chiefs of Staff to draw up an orderly withdrawal process for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Also, I would make public the papers pertaining to certain tragedies in the life of our country like the JFK assassination, Martin Luther King Jr., and the 9/11 Truth Movement. I would release everything the Bush administration knew about September 11.? McKinney leaves Denver today, but said she enjoyed her time in Colorado and will return in the future. ___ 5. http://www.periodico26.cu/english/news_world/august2008/us-convention082508.html Thousands of Protesters Converge on Democratic Convention in Denver Denver, Aug 25, (RHC).- Thousands of protesters have converged on Denver, Colorado, where the Democratic National Convention got underway on Monday. At a march and rally held on Sunday, organized by the group Recreate 68, the protesters temporarily blocked access to the convention site before police ordered the crowd to disperse. Speakers at the rally included anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan, Green Party presidential nominee Cynthia McKinney, and Vietnam veteran and anti-war activist Ron Kovic. Jeremy Scahill, a correspondent with the popular radio and TV program Democracy Now, says that "the city of Denver has been converted to a massive monument celebrating Barack Obama. This weekend, some 4,000 delegates to the Democratic National Convention began flooding the city for the much-anticipated coronation of the man chosen by the Democrats to face John McCain in November." He said that there are about 15,000 journalists to cover the convention. Scahill said that "the convention could be described as one big political NASCAR race, with corporate logos splashed on practically everything related to the big show." He emphasized that the total cost of the convention could well top $100 million" -- on track to be the most expensive political convention in U.S. history. Over the weekend, just two days before the convention opened in Denver, Barack Obama announced that he had chosen Joseph Biden as his running mate. The vice presidential candidate has served in the Senate since 1972 and is the chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. In 2002, Biden was one of twenty-nine Democratic senators to vote to authorize the invasion of Iraq. He later said his vote was a mistake. Biden has also taken the controversial position of advocating for the partitioning of Iraq into three or more regions. Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader described Biden as the MasterCard Senator. One of Biden?s biggest corporate backers is the Delaware-based credit card company MBNA. Biden was the key architect of the 2005 bankruptcy law which made it harder for consumers to file for bankruptcy protection. At the time, Biden?s son was working as a consultant to MBNA. ___ 6. http://www.independentpoliticalreport.com/2008/08/party-for-socialism-and-liberation-salutes-mckinney-sheehan/ Party for Socialism and Liberation ?salutes? [Photo Cindy Sheehan] Cynthia McKinney, a former Democratic congresswoman from Georgia, accepted the Green Party?s presidential nomination at their Party Convention in Chicago in July. The Green Party is on the ballot in 22 states and is currently working on obtaining ballot status in many more. On Aug. 8, Cindy Sheehan officially announced that she had guaranteed her spot on the November ballot. The announcement followed the collection and validation of thousands of signatures required to gain access as an independent candidate in San Francisco?s 8th Congressional District. Sheehan is running against Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Sheehan and McKinney are running campaigns with strong anti-war, anti-imperialist orientations. Getting on the ballot is quite a feat for any independent candidate and an even greater feat for progressives. But in the male-dominated, capitalist-controlled realm of electoral politics, the achievement of these women is a testament to their perseverance and strength. In 2005, Sheehan first gained prominence in the anti-war movement following the death of her son Casey?killed in the early months of the Iraq War?when she set up camp near Bush?s residence in Crawford, Texas, to challenge the war. She became a catalyst to the movement. On Sept. 24, 350,000 people marched in Washington, D.C., in what was a brief resurgence of mass anti-war activity. [Photo Cynthia McKinney] The aftermath of the 2006 Congressional elections proved decisively that the Democrats would not end the war. Since that time, Sheehan has been a major voice for a layer of anti-war activists who are sickened by the warmongering of Republicans and Democrats and who seek a progressive alternative. During her time in the U.S. Congress, McKinney became known for upholding highly principled positions and being supportive of a variety of different progressive causes. She has become well-known for her activism around Hurricane Katrina, her consistent stance and activism against the war, her support of the Palestinian struggle and bringing attention to the plight of political prisoners. She has overcome tremendous obstacles, not only as a woman but also as a person of color. These are noteworthy developments for the people?s movement. Sheehan and McKinney bring much-needed progressive voices into the electoral discourse. Their ability to gather support for their candidacies indicates that growing sectors of the population are rejecting the two-party framework that has yielded only war and death. Their leadership can advance the development of a politically independent mass movement capable of challenging imperialism. Gloria La Riva, the Party for Socialism and Liberation?s presidential candidate, is proud to join these progressive women by bringing a socialist voice to the electoral arena. The La Riva/Puryear campaign is already on the ballot in eight states with more to come. The PSL?s La Riva/Puryear campaign stands side by side with McKinney and her running mate Rosa Clemente in challenging the two-party system The PSL welcomes McKinney?s and Sheehan?s candidacies as expressions of the outrage, frustration and desire for radical social change in the United States. Together, these campaigns have the potential to build a stronger base for the people?s progressive movement in the coming period. ___ 7. Getting Started: The Democrats Convene in Denver AUGUST 25, 2008 - 12:28 PM Jackson Baker DENVER -- On Sunday morning, I woke in a Denver hotel room, and, while channel-surfing, discovered Fox News broadcasting a new version of the Fall of Man. While it was not exactly Miltonian in scope, no loss of Eden per se, the network's treatment certainly had its apocalyptic moments. There was its reporter, a neat-looking bespectacled young man who appeared to have been time-traveled from, say, 1957, to the scene of a gathering march whose members, far scruffier by contrast, belonged to the social tableau of roughly a decade later. Like 1967, the age of Dangerous Long-Haired Hippies. Or 1968, to be precise, since the leaders of this demonstration in downtown Denver had explicitly promised to re-create that year of revolutionary ferment and, specifically, to re-do the Democratic-convention chaos of Chicago 1968. What did I say, Milton? No, Dante, make it. Or how about George Romero. Over the bottom-of-the-screen slug "Leftist Protesters," the Fox man betook himself into the maelstrom of marchers, extending his portable mike to this one and that, asking each of them in turn what it was they thought they were doing. What ensued had to be a Sunday morning first on prime-time cable. The response that Foxman got from anyone he approached was threefold. Either "Fuck you!" (unstrained by any seven-second censor), or the middle finger (in several cases, the two-fisted version), or both. This went on for a full minute while the young reporter began to resemble some dogged but courageous fool lost in a No-Man's-Land on Flanders field and the Fox anchor-lady back in the studio viewed the proceedings with alarm. "Things are out of control here, as you can see," he said. "Yes, I can see things are out of control there," she said. And that was but a segue into an even grimmer announcement. "And wait 'til you see what's going on inside the Pepsi Center itself!" she teased. [SNIP STUFF ABOUT FOX EXAGERATION OF 'THREAT' OF DNC AND PROTESTERS] Were orgies taking place inside? Were dark conspiratorial plans being hatched amid Satanic trappings? Just what, Fox lady? I was on the edge of my seat. (Hotel bed, rather.) In fact, once the break was over, there was no more reference to anything hot and heavy going on in the Pepsi Center. Instead, what the Fox lady and her cohort on the anchor desk went back to reviewing the End of the Civilized World as they had just seen it before the break. They went through a list of some of incendiary presences who were slated to appear at a rally at the end of the ongoing march, and, lo and behold, one whom they lavished several admonitory words on was former Georgia congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, the current presidential nominee of the Green Party USA. Among the horrors so far inflicted on honest society by McKinney, as the Fox folks reminded us, was her alleged physical assault some years back of a U.S. Capitol policeman who, befuddled by a brand-new Afro hair style she was sporting, stopped her at a congressional checkpoint and challenged her for her ID. Not long after tabloid-style treatment of McKinney,... [SNIP STUFF ABOUT FOX ATTACKS ON MICHELLE OBAMA...] Rotsa ruck, I thought, and decided I'd had enough for one day of the Fair and Balanced network. I turned off the TV and fell to thinking about my own conversation in Memphis last week with a visiting Cynthia McKinney, who was accompanied by the Green Party's candidate for U.S. Senate, Chris Lugo. I had sat down with them at the Barnes and Noble store at Wolfchase Galleria for a brief chat on their way out of town, and either McKinney and Lugo were concealing their involvement in what Fox saw as a concerted effort to undermine the Western World and its values or they were - or at least could be - calm, reasonable people, possessed of a will to protect the environment, reform the political apparatus, and impose some restraints on what they saw as an unbridled capitalist system that had run amok for the last eight years (and for some time before that, actually) McKinney had served two different stints in Congress, and Lugo had so far not made a scratch during his two statewide races to date. (He had, however, succeeded in gaining some name recognition.) Neither had realistic hopes of winning this time around, and there was something both forlorn and heroic about their current effort. Since they could not be said to represent large numbers of people in the body politic, they might even have been regarded as irrelevant - maybe even in the comic, almost vaudevillian way that the Fox folks portrayed such types (as an alternative to their being villains at the gates). But, as Lugo emphasized, they were taking the first, perhaps tentative steps toward organizing a base of support among public interest groups - a foundation that could give them leverage in the system. Maybe so, maybe no. McKinney and Lugo were, in any case, as intolerant of what might be described as liberal condescension as the people at Fox News were. Barack Obama? They saw him to be the same old same old - just another sellout to the special interests, and McKinney was on hand at Sunday's rally and during the rest of the proceedings in Denver this week to make that point to whatever audience she might be able to command. She'll have trouble. All eyes and all expectations are on the man from Illinois (by way of Hawaii and Indonesia), and, as the Tennessee Democratic chairman Gray Sasser got the first meeting of the state delegation to this year's party convention under way on Monday morning, that sense of hopefulness (or simply "hope," as the candidate himself likes to say) was palpable among the delegates. With Hip Hop activist and independent journalist Rosa Clemente as her running mate, McKinney is currently polling at around 1% of the total vote. For her campaign, victory will be defined by obtaining 5% of the national vote needed to secure federal funding. The McKinney-Clemente Green Party ticket faces significant challenges in reaching that goal. They are currently on the ballot in only half of the states in the union and face a near blackout in the corporate media. Nonetheless, the first African-American woman to represent her state in Congress for twelve years, is still campaigning strongly articulated policy differences that distinguish her from the two major party candidates. In a recent interview with Grist Magazine, McKinney defined her energy policy as ?leave the oil in the soil.? She went on to say that the assumption that a Green Party candidacy only serves to take away votes from the Democrats is ludicrous. Uprising producer Gabriel San Roman spoke with Cynthia McKinney in Dana Point during a recent campaign stop. GUEST: Cynthia McKinney, Green Party Presidential Candidate. SocialistWorker.org} Between rhetoric and reality As you listen to the Republicans pilloried at the Democrats' Denver convention, pay close attention to what Obama says he'll actually do if he wins this election. August 26, 2008 [SNIP STUFF ABOUT OBAMA AND McCAIN ...] There are two independent presidential campaigns to the left of Obama whose political positions match their rhetoric. Ralph Nader is repeating his independent run from 2000 and 2004, and former Rep. Cynthia McKinney has won the presidential nomination of the Green Party. On most every question--war, civil liberties, jobs, corporate power, health care, the environment--McKinney and Nader represent a stark alternative to the two mainstream parties. Eight years ago, Nader was able to win millions of votes--and, more importantly, bring together people from different struggles to recognize their common commitment to an alternative to the political status quo. Unfortunately, this year, neither is likely to get a significant hearing. McKinney and Nader do offer voters the chance to cast a protest vote against war, racism and corporate greed, even if they will not be able to break through the media blackout on their candidacies. That vote won't count for much in this year's electoral arithmetic, but it can be a marker for the future. However, the more important task before and after the election will be building connections among people and organizations in preparation for the struggles to come--including among those who continue to be enthusiastic about Obama's candidacy. Obama's campaign has raised the hopes of many people, but it should be recognized that the enthusiasm for the Democrats in this election is symptomatic of a larger change among growing numbers of people in the U.S.--a rejection of the right-wing dogmas that dominated mainstream politics for decades and a searching for answers and ideas about what could be different. That's where the opportunities lie for rebuilding a left alternative in the months before and after the election. It's a reflection of culture, a barometer of health, and a measure of commitment to saving the planet. The doyenne of California cuisine, and creator of Berkeley's celebrated Chez Panisse restaurant, long has been an evangelist for fresh, locally grown, and - ideally - organic food as the answer to many of the world's problems. Now she's bringing her gospel to San Francisco over Labor Day weekend in an extravaganza of food, lectures and performances dubbed Slow Food Nation. Part agricultural fair, part political rally, the three-day event is the Slow Food movement's first big festival aimed at a larger audience. It's expected to draw about 50,000 visitors to the epicenter of the food movement on the West Coast to sample artisan food, tap their toes to name bands and hear arguments for a new national food policy. In Taste Pavilions set up at Fort Mason, food lovers will pay $65 to munch on handmade products ranging from chocolates and cheeses to pickles and beer. At Civic Center Plaza, they'll be asked to sign a petition for a new U.S. food policy. A revolution The petite, soft-spoken Waters calls her crusade "the Delicious Revolution." She wants to seduce people with the tempting flavors of fresh, seasonal food. She considers the industrialized global food system responsible for much of the pollution in the world as well as disease and obesity. Advertisement "We're losing our culture, we're losing our natural resources and we're losing our health," she said. "So we're kind of on a train that's going over a cliff and we just have to stop, get out, and find another way." Waters has spent much of the last decade working to bring better nutrition into schools with her Edible Schoolyard garden project at Martin Luther King Middle School in Berkeley and the Yale Sustainable Food Project in New Haven, Conn., where her daughter, Fanny Singer, went to college. Critics nonetheless argue that Slow Food USA is for the most part an elitist group of chefs and affluent consumers out of touch with the working class and poor people who are in most critical need of a system that is less reliant on fast food. "The majority of Americans are not in a position to engage in fine dining on a regular basis," said Brahm Amadi, executive director of People's Grocery in West Oakland. Farmers markets may have spread throughout the country and organic products may have gone mainstream, he said, but "very little substantive change has come to our poorest neighborhoods." Slow Food is an international organization founded in Italy nearly two decades ago by activist Carlo Petrini, who was outraged by the opening of a McDonald's in Rome's Piazza di Spagna. The name was chosen as the antithesis of fast food and the initial goals were to save endangered traditional foods, support small farmers and artisans, and preserve the pleasures of the table. More recently the group has simplified its message to "good, clean and fair food" for all. In an interview in the dining room of her 37-year-old restaurant, Waters said she felt a kinship with Petrini the moment she met him in 1999. "I realized Chez Panisse has always been a Slow Food restaurant," she said. In May of that year, she hosted a dinner to honor Petrini and launch the first U.S. convivium - the organization's name for chapters - in Berkeley. Now vice president of the more than 80,000-member international group, Waters also serves on the national board of Slow Food USA and is the founder of Slow Food Nation, its offshoot. Although the U.S. membership is still small at only 15,000 members nationwide, its core philosophy has spread rapidly thanks in part to the work of writers such as Michael Pollan, author of the bestselling "Omnivore's Dilemma." In 2007, the Oxford New American Dictionary named "locavore" - a term for people who try to eat only food grown or produced within a 100-mile radius - its word of the year. "I think that good, pure, affordable, wholesome food should be available to everybody," Waters said, "and it should be a right and not a privilege." Threat to food supply? Dennis Avery, an agricultural economist and director of the Center for Global Food Issues at the Hudson Institute, contends that the anti-industrial stance of the movement poses a threat to the world food supply. "No sooner did we get the green revolution, no sooner did the specter of mass starvation get pushed aside than we got this organic nonsense," he said from his offices in New York. "I just find them arrogant and elitist," said Steve Sando, who sells rare varieties of beans grown from seeds he's tracked down in Latin America. Last year, Sando blasted Petrini in his Rancho Gordo blog for a passage in the founder's book, "Slow Food Nation," criticizing vendors at the Ferry Plaza farmers market for their boutique prices. "I get a basic disdain for America and the American way of doing things from Slow Food," he said. Anya Fernald, executive director of Slow Food Nation, said that the event's goal is to bring people together around food. "We're building a stage on which a lot of organizations could bring their message and their hope for a more sustainable and more just food system," she said. Although a number of attractions, such as the Taste Pavilions are pricey, Fernald pointed out that many more - including a farmers market at Civic Center Plaza and performances on "the soapbox" in the 10,000 square foot Victory Garden planted in front of City Hall - will be free. Still, all the tickets are expected to be sold before festivities begin on Friday. "This event is not about Slow Food," Fernald says. "It's about the food movement, the necessity to get people together. Our humble goal is to take a very small step toward a change in the food system for everyone." BIKE PLAN PROPOSED By Julia Prodis Sulek Mercury News Article Launched: 08/25/2008 05:08:36 PM PDT Trying to entice more commuters to hop on bikes and leave their cars at home, San Jose City Councilman Sam Liccardo is pitching a plan to alter downtown streets to make biking safer and more convenient. The proposal calls for separating bicyclists from traffic by building physical barriers, using shrubbery or curbs for instance, making more bike racks available at public events, and hiring a private company to pilot a European-style "bike share" program, with bike rentals at light-rail stations. "People don't use bicycles as a commute option because they don't feel safe on our roads," said Liccardo, who represents the downtown area. "So the first of these three elements ? segregating the bike lane from the rest of traffic along key corridors in downtown ? is critical." With the support of Councilman Forrest Williams and Mayor Chuck Reed, whose "green vision" for the city includes alternative transportation, the plan would focus on the downtown area. Segregated bike trails would run along one side of the road and connect San Jose State University with City Hall, the Diridon train station and major downtown businesses, including Adobe Systems. Possible corridors include San Fernando, South Seventh and North Fourth streets. "If we're really going to move the needle, to encourage people to change their commuting habits, it seems to me it's less about building trails and lanes to far-flung places in the county as much as it Advertisement is focusing on those locations that we know are key destinations for people," said Liccardo, whose proposal will be considered Wednesday by the city's Rules and Open Government Committee. Its next step could be an airing by the city council next month. Local bicyclists are heralding the idea, calling it a "huge step" forward. "All those things they want to implement ? that would make it so much nicer," said Warren Jenkins, who rides his single-speed, green Schwinn from downtown to his job at Recycle Bookstore on The Alameda. "The way things are going with cars and gasoline prices, human power is going to be a lot more prominent. It's part of the solution, right?" The "bike share" program, similar to luggage cart rentals at airports, would allow commuters to use a token or credit card to borrow bikes from a light-rail station to get to work, then return it when they get on the train home. Corinne Winter, executive director of Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition, commended city leaders for being innovative. "Every year we're seeing more people get on their bikes," she said. "What's happening is that the transit facilities were built to handle a certain number of riders. The demand is surpassing that." Liccardo doesn't have a price tag yet for his plan, but he suggests using "largely untapped" federal funding as well as Valley Transportation Authority money to build the network of barricaded bike lanes. "We're looking at a modest pilot program," Liccardo said. "The cost will depend on how many corridors we identify and for how many miles." With commuters paying $4 a gallon for gas, he said, "this is a real opportunity to encourage people to change their commuting habits." Contact Julia Prodis Sulek at jsulek at mercurynews.com. GPCA PLENARY TAKES POSITIONS ON ALL BALLOT MEASURES EXCEPT RE PROPOSITION 1 HIGH SPEAD RAIL August 25, 2008 To: GPCA County Contacts List From: Warner Bloomberg Campaigns and Candidates Working Group Co-Coordinator Subject: County Polling for Initiatives on the November 4, 2008 Election Ballot GPCA positions on ballot measures occur in two ways: By decision of the delegates at a General Assembly or by County Polling. On August 24, 2008, the GPCA General Assembly of Delegates took positions on Propositions 2 thrugh 12. Those positions, summarized below, are now the official positions of the Green Party of California. These are the positions that should be used in tabling literature, newsletters, webpages, etc. However, a decision was not reached at the Plenary regarding Proposition 1. (High Speed Rail Bond). County Polling continues on this issue!!! Below you will find updated instructions for GPCA County organizations to report County GP positions on this item. Immediately following those instructions, you will find reports that have been developed from various GPCA contributors describing this measure and suggesting positions. These recommendations are simply those of the people who wrote or compiled them and DO NOT constitute GPCA positions. PLEASE NOTE: As recipients on the County Contacts list YOU have the responsibility to communicate this information to other members in your local County GP orgnization. You are to use whatever process you use to make decisions of this kind ? but each County needs to instruct its delegates on these issues. ary, County Polling will continue. Any questions about these comments should be addressed to Warner Bloomberg at _wsb3attyca at aol.com_ (mailto:wsb3attyca at aol.com) or (408) 295-9353. Any questions about the following instructions should be addressed to the County Polling Coordinators, Cat Woods at (415) 897-6989 or _cat801 at mindspring.com_ (mailto:cat801 at mindspring.com) and Tim Smith at _Rioryon at aol.com_ (mailto:Rioryon at aol.com) . All County Polling Reports should be submitted to both County Polling Coordinators. (Please Note: If you send email to Cat Woods, please include a telephone number for her to contact you.) Warner Bloomberg CCWG Co-Coordinator INSTRUCTIONS FOR GPCA STATEWIDE POLL OF COUNTIES INITIATIVES APPEARING ON THE NOVEMBER 4, 2008 ELECTION BALLOT The GPCA uses a poll of all recognized county Green Parties to determine GPCA positions on ballot measures as an alternative to making those decisions at a state meeting. Because the Plenary did not take a position on Proposition 1. (High Speed Rail Bond), County Polling is continuing on this one ballot measure for the next state election on November 4, 2008. Please be sure that your county participates by submitting votes by Sunday, September 21, 2008. THE POLL: This poll contains a report and recommendation made by volunteers from the Green Party grassroots who have reviewed Proposition 1. Of course, counties are free to agree or disagree with the recommended positions. The full text of this initiative can be located by going to the webpage for the California Secretary of State _www.ss.ca.gov_ (http://www.ss.ca.gov/) and following the applicable links. PROCESS: Please provide both Poll Coordinators (Cat Woods and Tim Smith) with vote results from your county in the following form for each ballot initiative (including bond measures): "Yes" for the GPCA to support the initiative "No" for the GPCA to oppose the initiative "No Position" for the GPCA to deliberately remain neutral on the initiative Votes may also be cast as "Abstain" if they do not wish to participate in the poll. Abstentions will be counted toward quorum. Vote on the initiative itself, not the recommendation. For example, if the report has recommended a position of "No," and your county wishes to agree and vote "No" on the initiative, then your county should vote "No" on the initiative, and not "Yes" on the recommended "No" position. PLEASE SUBMIT VOTES IN THE AMOUNT ALLOTED TO YOUR COUNTY FOR THE ORANGE COUNTY (DANA POINT) PLENARY. That list was published in the agenda packet for that state meeting to be held AUGUST 23-24, 2008. For example, if your county had 2 delegates, you would submit 2 votes in any combination of positions. (Votes from counties with more than one delegate vote need not be unanimous.) If you have any questions about the total number of votes that can be cast for any measure, contact the GPCA Coordinating Committee member(s) who represent your region. Your county should rely on its own internal processes to arrive at its positions. The poll has an 80% threshold. The default where the threshold or quorum is not met is ?No Position?. TIMELINE: The voting period began on August 10, 2008, and ends on September 21, 2008 (11:59 PM PST). Votes received after the closing date and time will not be counted. Submit all votes to BOTH the Poll Coordinators at the following email addresses: Cat Woods _cat801 at mindspring.com_ (mailto:cat801 at mindspring.com) or (415) 897-6989. Cat prefers telephone messages. If you send her your County's votes by email, include a telephone number to contact if she has any questions about those votes. Tim Smith Rioryon at aol.com Please submit any questions about the process of the poll to the same addresses. Prop. 1: High Speed Rail Bond Reports Proposition 1 would create a rail trust fund to issue $9.95 billion in bonds to build a new, electric, high-speed railroad (HSR) between San Francisco and Los Angeles ($9 billion) and for connections to the HSR and for other repairs and modernization of existing tracks , signals, etc. Additional money would come from the Federal government and from private investors (because the project is expected to start yielding profits in about 20 years). If you feel you?ve been hearing about this plan for years, that?s because you have. High-Speed Rail operates successfully in dozens of countries around the world. In 1996 the State created the California High-Speed Rail Authority to plan for train service at 200 miles per hour or faster, to connect the ? major metropolitan areas of California, and provide service between northern California and southern California? (according to the legislative analyst). This bond measure was scheduled for the ballot twice in recent years and then pulled, and will be on the November ballot (unless the Legislature passes a different version, AB 3034, in time to place it on the ballot instead). San Franciscans (and East Bay people like us that are within easy range of San Francisco) and Los Angeles-area voters tend to see this project as a faster, cheaper alternative to driving (and a cleaner, cheaper alternative to flying). However, we aren?t the only potential riders. The proposed route would eventually link downtown stations in San Diego, Los Angeles, Fresno, San Jose, San Francisco, and Sacramento, and also have stops in Central Valley cities. Not all trains would stop at all stations, allowing fewer delays for the long-distance passengers while providing service for local Valley passengers. Let?s shift the scene to Merced, and see how things look from there. The Authority has produced several attractive brochures, including one that shows the travel times from Sacramento to Los Angeles, Sacramento to San Diego, Merced to San Francisco, Modesto to Los Angeles, and more. However, Proposition 1, the first phase of the plan, heads west SOUTH of Merced, so it doesn?t serve Merced, Modesto, Stockton, or Sacramento at all. Voters in the Valley would be expected to vote for Prop 1 based on the hope that in the future extensions will be built as shown on the Authority?s maps. (Voters in Merced have been promised, by the Authority, that Merced will actually be served by the first phase, despite the maps, but nothing in Prop 1 actually says that.) Supporters emphasize the real downside of NOT building HSR. Population growth in the coming years will mean constant pressure for more highways and expanded airports, with their added environmental destruction locally and added greenhouse gas emissions. HSR uses 15 times less energy per passenger than single-passenger car trips, and air travel is even worse. The most controversial decision involves the route from the Central Valley to San Francisco. Current car traffic is four times greater through the Altamont Pass than the Pacheco Pass. If the HSR was routed through the Altamont Pass, it would have many more potential riders (paying customers) than the relatively empty land in the Pacheco Route, which the Authority recommends--empty of human population, that is. Wildlife currently can travel over a corridor stretching nearly 250 miles from Altamont Pass to the grapevine, but if the HSR goes through the Pacheco Pass, the rails would be protected by 20-foot-high chain-link fences, blocking the wildlife corridor. Many environmentalists favor avoiding wildlife habitat (the Pacheco Pass route), and anyone opposing more sprawl development are concerned that the Pacheco Pass route will contribute to exactly that. The decision we have to make is whether the deficiencies in the plan that is currently proposed are so great as to outweigh the advantages that HSR would provide if it were done right. The Transportation And Landuse Coalition (TALC) has been supporting the general concept, working closely with the Authority to improve the actual plan, and in consultation with member groups (which include the Green Party of Alameda County) has been deciding on what criteria to use to make a recommendation. TALC has delayed their decision because of the legislation still pending as of this writing which may remove some of the problems with the current ballot measure. Other groups have already decided to oppose Prop 1. For example, one of the signers of the ballot argument against Prop 1 is the president of the California Rail Foundation (CRF). CRF and several other environmental organizations are planning a lawsuit directed against the EIR. While I expect this decision to be difficult, my recommendation is ?Yes, with reservations.? (Author Anonymous) NO on Proposition 1 -- High Speed Rail Bond We all believe in attractive alternatives to driving, especially sleek electric trains designed in Europe, but the promises in Proposition 1 are too good to be true. Out front, the promoters say this is a $45 billion system. The $9 billion provided by the ballot measure for high-speed rail is only 1/5 the project cost, and project proponents are likely to come back asking taxpayers for additional tens of billions from taxpayers. There is no guarantee that there ever will be a workable rail system, and under current law, no consequences for project managers if they waste every dime. The idea is apparently to start a very big hole in the ground, then come back and ask for more bucks. Federal funding is as imaginary as private investment, as Amtrak high speed rail funding belongs to the 20 senators in Northeastern states. The firm which has been prime contractor for all work authorized to date by the High Speed Rail Authority is Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB), notorious for unsigned engineering drawings on sections of the Wilshire Subway that caved in, and for choosing the wrong concrete epoxy for the tunnel in Boston?s out-of-control Big Dig. The cost of the Big Dig ballooned from $2 billion to $22 billion over the course of the project, and the tunnel still leaks seawater. PB and other firms were fined $450 million under their settlement with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, but the rest of the money is gone, with not very many feet of highway to show for it. PB also was responsible for the multi-billions of cost overruns on the San Jose light rail line, the Wilshire Subway, and the BART-SFO line, and their overall business model doesn?t seem to have changed much since. For example, one of the most recent PB productions was a plan for a $1 billion Sacramento airport line. On the high-speed rail project, not only the cost figures are ballooned beyond belief. The Rail Authority predicts an annual ridership of 117 million passengers on the 24-station line. As a reality check, France?s most popular high-speed train, the TGV-Southeast carried 18 million passengers during its 10th year of operation. Eurostar, the London-Paris high-speed train you may have heard about, finally managed to carry more than 10 million passengers for the first time last year, a decade and a half after it started running. It is hard to believe that California trains will outperform European routes with more population. The Authority claims that the project will have no operating deficit, but the Legislative Analyst has produced an opinion in the ballot that the operating cost would be about $1 billion annually, and suggests that some proportion of this would have to be covered by state subsidies (likely in the hundreds of millions annually). This would directly harm all transit service statewide. The Rail Authority has been actively goosing the Merced County real estate market with statements about the "new California gold rush" and its selection of the Pacheco Route, a repeat of the UC Merced land scam with the same participants. Stations in Gilroy and Palmdale will be minutes from the Peninsula and Los Angeles, respectively, causing huge incentives for new exurban sprawl. The staff says they won't build a Los Banos station but Angelo Tsakopoulos and his investor corporations have purchased 3500 acres of land there within three miles of the proposed stop, so the station and sprawl are likely to happen if the route is built. Severe negative environmental impacts on the Pacific Flyway (disruption of nesting and avian mortality from striking 220 mph trains), and noise impacts on communities on the Peninsula, and in Santa Clara County, Los Angeles County, and Orange County are also a major concern. Promised environmental benefits are questionable. According to British studies, 220 mph trains do not produce greenhouse gas reductions or energy savings, because of the exponential increase in energy requirement of trains above about 120 mph. France has GHG reductions from HSR only because the trains are 100% nuclear powered. The proposal here will depend on additional coal-fired plants in the Southwest. Now researchers want to know why ? and what will motivate people to try harder. Even consumers who identify themselves as environmentalists don't always act on those beliefs, a new study shows, put off by high prices and the hassles of buying green products. And a Santa Clara University researcher says negative feedback in how-green-am-I surveys sometimes keep people from taking positive steps. In a study by Forrester Research, based in Cambridge, Mass., nearly 61,000 U.S. and Canadian residents were interviewed this year on various green topics. Their responses confirmed that climate-change issues are increasingly on people's minds, revealing that 60 percent of people are concerned about the environment; almost half (45 percent) are worried about global warming, and only one in seven people think that governments should solve the problem. To Ted Schadler, a Forrester vice president and principal analyst, that leaves 85 percent of the people surveyed with a sense of some personal responsibility about fighting global warming. Still, as his "Green Attitudes Don't Guarantee Green Actions" research shows, feeling green isn't enough. "It's easier to feel green than to act green,'' Schadler writes. "Feeling green doesn't cost any time or money or force you to change your habits or accept something new or different." Here's Schadler's reasoning: In the survey, most people Advertisement said they recycle paper, bottles and cans (63 percent) and have bought energy-efficient light bulbs (57 percent). These are actions where the hassle factor is low. But just 14 percent said they've brought toxic materials to a community recycling center, just 11 percent recycled their last TV or PC and only 7 percent say they've paid more for an energy-efficient appliance. "These actions have a much higher hassle factor," Schadler said. "And asking consumers to spend a premium on a green product is the most hassle-filled commitment at all." For both policy-makers and marketers, understanding what motivates people to adopt more environmentally progressive actions is crucial. But experts say there's no simple answer. Santa Clara University assistant professor of psychology Amara Brook believes a better understanding of global warming and a knowledge of the impact of specific actions is helpful. And while Americans love their sense of independence ? "we idolize the Marlboro man, the independent cowboy thing" ? the positive influence of social pressure can't be discounted, she said, citing the "green chic" of the Toyota Prius hybrid as an example. But a key factor, according to a paper written by Brook and Jennifer Crocker of the University of Michigan ? who presented their findings at the American Psychological Association's annual meeting in Boston this month? is whether you're a committed environmentalist or not. Take the World Wildlife Fund's Ecological Footprint calculator, for example. Brook and Crocker found that when those who already are concerned about the environment got a low rating on the Ecological Footprint calculator ? which asks them about what they eat, what they drive and how they live ? they tended to resolve to do better and to take more green actions. "For them, hearing negative stuff was motivational,'' Brook said. She knows this because they asked participants to do something green, in this case write a letter. But for those who weren't already invested in being green, getting a sense they weren't doing well environmentally tended to prompt them to do nothing or even reject the idea of doing more. Those folks either didn't write a letter, didn't write it on the green topic or even wrote an anti-environmental letter. Brook's research is based on two studies of undergraduate students at the University of Michigan, where she worked before she was hired at SCU in 2005. As a psychologist with a background in environmental science, she's fascinated by what motivates people to act environmentally and the conflicts that exist in their daily lives. It's the notion of "people not defining themselves as green doing green things, and others that said they were green and drove SUVs and had big houses," she said. Her study notes the apparent disparity between attitude and action. While a majority of Americans consider themselves environmentalists, just 13 percent have contributed money to green causes and only 14 percent use alternative transportation, according to past studies. That suggests, she writes, "that only a small minority of those who want a healthier environment and consider themselves environmentalists engage in environmentally sustainable behavior." Knowing how to increase those actions is "essential" for future improvement, she said. "We need to recognize that people have a limited time to think about and deal with these things. Asking people to even spend a little more time (on green issues) is a big deal." Contact Matt Nauman at (408) 920-5701 or mnauman at mercurynews.com. [Details posted at http://www.communitycurrencyFilmFestival2008.html.] On the cusp of the conventions, NIST issued an absurd report on WTC7, claiming that, for the first time in history, fire brought down a 47 story steel framed building, rewriting some basic laws of physics. The New York Times did mention that Richard Gage, AIA, founder of Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth [http://www.ae911truth.org] was dismissing the investigation as flawed, and acknowledged the growing numbers of skeptics who are not accepting the official version of what happened on September 11th. [Details posted at http://www.911blogger.com/node/17269.] The timing of the report is both a challenge and an opportunity for us to raise key issues, like the failure of NIST to address the abundant evidence that explosives were used to bring down the buildings, in the run up to the November elections. Richard Gage, AIA, is a member of our group, and will be speaking at our rally, and the film festival, which features some excellent new documentaries that powerfully condemn the official narrative. We also plan on bringing the giant 12' replica of the flawed Commission Report (with enormous holes in it) to our rally, and the Film Festival. Emacs! Richard Gage receiving a 2007 9/11 Truth Heroic Citizen Award I can't tell you how much of a difference just one person makes in this endless struggle for truth, peace, and justice. I remember going to a peace rally in February 2002 with a huge banner and asking for other people's help to hold it up, and to help me pass out some simple flyers detailing our demand for a Congressional Investigation of 9/11 and the questions we raised. When my best friend saw me at the rally, she asked me, "Are you mad/insane/crazy?" She later produced a radio series from the San Francisco International Inquiry into 9/11, which inspired other people. It has taken a long time, but there are more and more people, all over the world, heroically challenging conventional wisdom, educating their fellow citizens, investigating false flag terrorism in their own countries, standing up for human rights and the laws which protect people from the tyrannical abuse of force. We need to be the change we want to see, to show courage, speak truth, overcome the blinding fear that has shut down people's ability to even look at or think about the evidence that we have uncovered and the responsibility that we bear, to rein in our government and hold it accountable for its actions. Please join us. Even if you cannot physically come to our events, you can conspire (breathe in unison/act together) with us wherever you are- in thought, spirit, word or deed to raise consciousness, share information, speak with courage. But please do come, if you can, it should be fun, inspiring, educational, and the more the merrier. Green Party leader Elizabeth May is welcoming MP Blair Wilson to the Green Party as the first Green Member of Parliament in Canada. Mr. Wilson, MP for West Vancouver?Sunshine Coast?Sea to Sky Country, will serve in the Green Party Shadow Cabinet. "Today we make history," said Ms. May. "I am grateful for Mr. Wilson's principled belief that the Green Party deserves a voice in Parliament and for his firm commitment to democracy. With a Green MP sitting in the House of Commons, it will now be impossible to exclude the Green Party from the televised leaders' debates in the next election. "I am also pleased that Mr. Wilson has agreed to join our Shadow Cabinet as Immigration Critic. As a past member of the House of Commons Immigration Committee, he is well-qualified for this role and brings expertise to this position that will prove invaluable to the Green Party." Mr. Wilson has served as an Independent MP since autumn of 2007. "Not only do I embrace the policies of my new party, I will feel that all my past difficulties are justified if, by my actions, I can make a real difference by ensuring Elizabeth May is included in the leaders' debates," said Mr. Wilson. "There is a democracy deficit in Canadian politics and this is one step in restoring effective democracy in Canada. "Democracy is threatened when legitimate national leaders are barred from what is arguably the single most important political event in an election ? the televised debates. It is shocking that the Green Party was excluded from the debates in the past, but by joining the Green Party, I can help guarantee that this travesty will not be repeated in the next election. You can go to www.gp.org/ houseparties for downloadable templates and ideas for getting the party started. Hopefully, many of the viewers will be inspired to get involved with the campaign, either with time or with money to support this courageous woman and her running mate, Rosa Clemente, also a bold, courageous, intelligent woman, who are determined to tell the truth about a whole range of issues. We have come to expect a steady stream of lies from our "political leaders," as routine standard procedure.
