Hi All,
House Judiciary Chair, John Conyers has begun investigations on the
allegations in Ron Suskind's book, "TheWay of the World: A Story of
Truth and Hope in an Age of Extremism." Conyers is reviewing
allegations that senior Bush Administration officials ordered the
forgery and dissemination of false intelligence documents about Iraq.
Conyers was on Democracy Now with Ron Suskind last Thursday Aug.14 and
stated "I'm calling everybody back.
We've got a huge amount of work to engage in." Everyone listening to
him thought he meant he was calling the Judiciary Committee members back
from recess to have a investigative hearing on the allegations. I
certainly thought Conyers was saying that. I started to have my doubts
about what Conyers meant when on Friday, the day after the Democracy Now
program, one of our SVIC members spotted our own House Judiciary
Committee member, Zoe Lofgren, at the San Jose Farmers Market. I was
puzzled, if Conyers had called back the committee and Zoe is a member of
the committee why was she still in San Jose on recess. I called Conyers
office to find out what he was talking about on the Demoocracy Now
program. What I found out was that the "everybody" he called back
referred to the House Judiciary staff. I talked to one of the staff and
was told it was the staff he called back from recess and they indeed are
investigating the allegations. I was told that they are doing the
preliminary investigation in order to have all the information for the
Judiciary Committee members when they get back to Washington the first
week of September.
Once I got over my disappointment that the Judiciary Committee was not
in session and investigating the allegations I then brightened up.
Conyers having the Judiciary staff investigating the allegations
actually is very promising. After all it was the Judiciary staff in
1974 that prepared the 65 page report on Presidential Impeachment, the
report that played a major role in initiating impeachment against Nixon
and Zoe Lofgren was a Judiciary staff member at the time and helped
write the report.
Please call John Conyers office and tell them you are pleased that the
staff is investigating the allegations in Ron Suskind's book and that
you look forward to the Judiciary Committee holding hearings on the
investigations.
Conyers office # is 202-225-5126
Also call the Judiciary Committee staff and tell them the same message.
The # is 202-225-3951
Thanks,
