Jaywalk the crosswalk.

Think what happens when you push the button and stop the cars.
3-ton cars moving 30 miles an hour must convert their kinetic energy
to heat, bringing them to a stop.  Then they must be accelerated
to 30 mph again.  

Leave the button alone.   Wait for a break in the traffic and cross 
without using the light.
