They will arrive by the end of next wk, Sept 12. I'm ordering 250 of them. I hope there will be a few locals who can help us all out (including me who is footing the cost) and take 25-50 of them to be distributed. We need to get some visibility. Each sign will end up costing approx $2. I will be driving thru San Jose and up to Berkeley/SF on Oct 3, and I may go to the LA fundraiser for McKinney on Sept 23. Cathy Deppe and I only moved to Los Angeles from San Jose a few years ago. Now comes the kind of fight that ought to be issue #1 for California Greens and it?s happening in an inner-city, nearly all-black community walking distance from my house. What was that business about why in the world a Black Man would join the Green Party? The Powers That Be are here sending a message that for all the talk about "change! change! change!" from the one corporate party with two names, ain't nothing gonna change and it will be business as usual on January 20th. Alex Walker Los Angeles Greens = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Baldwin Hills Oil: 'Drill, Baby, Drill' -- Through the Heart of Obama Country by Alex Walker "Drill, baby, drill!" - was a popular cheer at the 2008 Republican National Convention. It's a parody of "Burn, baby, burn," the infamous cry during the 1965 Watts rebellion in Los Angeles. Ironically, it was former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, one of the Republican Party's very few prominent black politicians, leading the cheer for the riot of the privileged: So, do you want to put your country first? Then let's reduce our dependency on foreign sources of oil and promote oil and gas production at home. In other words: Drill, baby, drill!20And drill now! Baldwin Hills, View Park, Windsor Hills, and Ladera Heights in Los Angeles, are some of the most prominent middle-class African-American neighborhoods in the United States. Blacks are more than 70% of Baldwin Hills' population. After Blacks began moving there in the 1960s, it was nicknamed the "Golden Ghetto" and the "Black Beverly Hills." It has been home to celebrities like Ray Charles, Nancy Wilson, Tina Turner and the late Los Angeles Mayor, Tom Bradley. Black Entertainment Television (BET) used the setting for the "Baldwin Hills" television show. The Fight Over the Baldwin Hills Oil Field Visit Web Site at: www.baldwinhillsoil.org Watch Video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bSWaMlOxXQ The two-square-mile Baldwin Hills Oil Field is the last large-scale undeveloped open space in South and West Los Angeles. The Oil Field has operated since 1924. Over time, it naturally becomes harder to extract oil for old wells until at some point they become unprofitable. In recent years the field had almost played out. As the oil companies have left, a large area has been designated the Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area. For years, the old field and the surrounding nice residential neighborhoods coexisted. But this is the era when everything you ever thought you could rely on from American business - job security, health care, pensions, or even honest accounting - is old fashioned. Plains Exploration and Production Company (PXP) based in (where else?) Ho uston, Texas wants to drill up to 1,000 new wells over the next 20 years. Next week there'll be what's expected to be a contentious public hearing Los Angeles County Planning Commission Wednesday, September 10, 2008 Hall of Administration, Room 381B 500 West Temple Street Los Angeles, CA 90012 . . . Corporate America is sending a message that for all the talk about "change! change! change!" from the one corporate party with two names, ain't nothing gonna change and it will be business as usual on January 20th. . . . In 2001, California was plunged into an unprecedented energy crisis: rolling blackouts, soaring power bills, a panicked state government. Turned out the Golden State was being systematically ripped-off. Documents and audiotapes proved Houston-based Enron Corporation asked power companies to take plants offline - in order to make more money. In one taped phone call, an Enron employee celebrated the fact that a massive forest fire had shut down a transmission line: ENRON EMPLOYEE 1: Yeah. ENRON EMPLOYEE 2: Now, the magical word of the day is "Burn, baby, burn." ENRON EMPLOYEE 1: What's happening? ENRON EMPLOYEE 2: There's a fire under the core line. This will delay us from 45 to 2,100. ENRON EMPLOYEE 1: Really. Burn, baby, burn! When Michael Steele cried "Drill, Baby, Drill!" to the GOP faithful, maybe he wasn't thinking about Watts in 1965. Maybe he was th inking about Enron's battle cry in 2001. Less than a decade later, thanks to the terrifying spike in oil prices, the energy greedheads and carbon pushers are trying to stampede Californians into accepting offshore oil drilling and new drilling in old wells even though all the experts agree this will have no impact on the global marketplace for oil. As I write this, the "Drill, Baby, Drill" crowd is pushing hard for offshore drilling in Santa Barbara, Long Beach, Monterey Bay, and even off Point Reyes (see www.environmentcalifornia.org). And always, always, they try to divide us and rule us by playing off class, religious, and "racial" differences. Message-ID: <48C31AD5.2080509@charter.net> My most recent column (slated for 9/17) has been submitted to the Morgan Hill Times. Recent stories in the Times indicated that our schools have made progress in teaching basic science. I called the school district and validated that it was real. That is great. Being knowledgeable about science is becoming increasingly important in our ever more complex world. It is unfortunate that too many schools have taken too long to achieve any sort of proficiency and we pay for this as a society, often being taken in by political slogans supporting solutions that will never be. Science provides a factual description of how the world works. Nearly everyone understands the simple concept of a lever. Given a strong stick and a small rock, I can move a much larger rock. Science would tell you exactly how long the stick needs to be and how big of a rock you can move. I rather wish that more of our legislators, both locally and nationally, had gotten past this basic level. If they had, we might not be in the predicaments that we are in today. Watching the Republican National Convention, I was appalled by the fervor with which the words ?Drill, baby, drill? were chanted. There seems to be an overall feeling that drilling for more oil, either on the Outer Continental Shelf or in Alaska will alleviate our addiction to petroleum or the need to import it in large quantities from countries that are not necessarily our friends. Neither could be further from the truth. Peak production from new offshore drilling is forecast to reach 200,000 barrels per day by 2030. That is a long way off and will provide for only 4 days of our requirement. This should not become the basis of our energy policy and those who would make it so may be delusional, ignorant or lying through their teeth. Or, it may be that they just don't understand basic science. We know that the world is warming. That fact can not be denied. Some would deny that the burning of fossil fuels has anything to do with it. Those who do are also deficient in their understanding of science. If any reader wants to challenge me on this, I would ask them to read The Carbon Age by Eric Roston. Buy it from Book Smart, check it out from the library, but read it. The science is not that difficult. I read it recently and became even more convinced that climate change, a major disruption in what Roston calls the Carbon Cycle, is the single biggest threat to civilization as we know it... perhaps to much of the life on this planet. Most scientists who have focused on the manner in which greenhouse gases are changing our climate indicate that our atmosphere will continue to warm when the amount of carbon di-oxide in the atmosphere exceeds 350 parts per million (ppm). It is now 385. Even if we were to stop all burning of fossil fuels today, the earth will continue to warm. Both the Obama and McCain campaigns use the term ?clean coal? to describe a solution to our need for electricity in which the carbon in the emissions of new power plants will be capture and returned to the earth in some manner. The problem with that hope is that there are absolutely no clean coal plants in operation. There is talk, there are plans, but there is nothing working and the earliest that any can be expected is 2015. This says nothing about what we do with the large number of coal fired power plants that are already in existence, or those that will come on line in other countries over the intervening years. It says nothing about the level of environmental destruction that arises from the mining process. In West Virginia, it is called Mountain Top Removal. Just think of taking the top off of El Toro, using the material to fill in Uvas Canyon and then trying to find another source of fresh water to replace Uvas Reservoir. That is happening every day in Appalachia You do not have to earn a PhD in physics, or biology to understand that much of what you hear does not make sense. All it takes is some curiosity and the time to do a little reading. Yes, it is encouraging that the MHUSD is improving science education. It is encouraging that we have a Congressman with a degree in mathematics. But when I listen to so much of the populist political pandering that passes for fresh ideas, those who would be the new boss sounding like the old boss, I just hope that we have enough time to educate a new generation of young people who will not be fooled again. -- "Anytime you have an opportunity to make things better and you don't, then you are wasting your time on this Earth" Roberto Clemente Wes Rolley 17211 Quail Court, Morgan Hill, CA 95037 http://www.refpub.com/ -- Tel: 408.778.3024 From andid at cagreens.org Sun Sep 7 10:32:19 2008 From: andid at cagreens.org (Andrea Dorey) Date: Sun, 7 Sep 2008 10:32:19 -0700 Subject: [Sosfbay-discuss] Fwd: Honda Specials...FYI References: <130EA69F-A306-4BBD-8CC2-569DAED15610@wrytor.com> Message-ID: <3B550BBB-1AEF-4ED3-9DCE-730D5B86F1B6@cagreens.org> Begin forwarded message: > From: Andrea Dorey > Date: September 7, 2008 10:31:42 AM PDT > To: Dan Delehanty > Subject: Honda Specials... > > Dear Dan, > > Thank you for keeping me informed of Honda's products and sales. > This is my second monthly update from Honda. This post is dedicated to my friend, Wes Rolley, webmaster of the "Pombo Watch" Web Site (see "MH Man Posts Pombo Watch on Website," Morgan-Hill Times, March 12, 2004). I couldn't help thinking about Wes and the ordeal of being a Green activist in a polluted society, when I read these opening lines: Published by the San Francisco Chronicle Dems' Offshore Drilling Plan Comes With Catch by Zachary Coile, Tuesday, September 9, 2008 (09-09) 04:00 PDT Washington - Just three years ago Richard Pombo, the cowboy boot-wearing Tracy Republican lawmaker, faced an outcry from Democrats for pushing a bill to lift the 27-year-old ban on drilling off the East and West coasts and let states choose whether to allow oil rigs off their shores. In a sign of how much the energy debate has shifted in an era of nearly $4-a-gallon gasoline, virtually the same proposal that Pombo floated will be introduced on the House floor this month - by Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Nancy Pelosi and the NeoPombo Democrats think they are being "clever" by giving the Republicans something they want now, namely, opening the door to offshore drilling, so they can get something back that the "liberals" supposedly want, repealing tax subsidies for oil companies and requiring electric utilities to get 15% of their energy from renewables by 2020. Senate Democratic leader, Harry Reid, says he'll allow a vote on an energy plan that would allow drilling off the coast of four states - Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia - while also revoking tax breaks for oil companies and offering new incentives for wind and solar, biofuels, coal-to-liquid fuels and nuclear energy. Notice the inclusion of "clean" coal and nuclear with the other "nice" stuff. The whole thing is a parliamentary charade anyway because Congress is set to adjourn in less than a month and Our Dear Leader, President Bush, has vowed to veto any bill that raises taxes on the poor, little, trillionaire oil companies. If, indeed, the GOP gets what it wants -- and end to the ban to offshore drilling -- is anyone here naive enough to bet that the Bush-Cheney-McCain-Palin clique would ever follow through on their half of the bargain? Anyway, by the time to the year 2020, this "compromise" will be long forgotten, we will, of course, be in another "crisis," and everybody will be saying we environmental "extremists" should quit being so "rigid" and let the NeoPombos negotiate a "compromise" with what will then be the "Nuke, Baby, Nuke!" crowd.? ?Read more! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Anna gave her usual blather--"talk, talk, talk, I did this, I did that, it's such a privilege to serve, we have such a great future... blah blah.... okay, is it safe to stop now, or will you notice that I didn't answer the question?" Anna made claims that she has made significant contributions to the defense of the Constitution in her committees, and 50 years from now when the docs are declassified we'll know what a hero she was. I submitted three questions. They didn't read one asking Anna to defend her gutless complicity in Bush's 8-year war on the values of democracy, and they didn't read one asking Carol how (and if) she distances herself from anti-semitism in the 9/11 Truth movement. Afterwards, Carol tried to dismiss the antisemitism issue as mere semantics. She needs a better answer than that. Tian and I both pointed out that Carol's pitch ended with a her self-description as a truth-seeker when it should have ended with "Vote for me." (I'd put it "Vote for me, and here's why.") In safe races where there's no danger of unseating the liberal, voters are free to vote Green without fear of unintended consequences, and we should be aggressively going after 30,000 votes to show the Democrats that smug, hack, gutless politics are not acceptable. _________________________________________________________________ Stay up to date on your PC, the Web, and your mobile phone with Windows Live. http://clk.atdmt.com/MRT/go/msnnkwxp1020093185mrt/direct/01/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The Libertarian said "get the price signals right in the marketplace." Carol said something, but I forgot what. I was hoping one of them would say something like "I drive less than I used to", but none of them did. I asked what the candidates would do to make the political system more interesting to more Americans. Anna Eshoo said "make campaign cycles shorter." Peter Camejo, a Green Party leader who was a third-party candidate in three California gubernatorial elections before becoming Ralph Nader's running mate in the 2004 presidential race, has died. He was 68. Camejo, who had been battling lymphoma, died Saturday at his home in Folsom, outside Sacramento. "Peter was a friend, colleague and politically courageous champion of the downtrodden and mistreated of the entire Western Hemisphere," Nader wrote in a statement released Saturday. "Everyone who met Peter, talked to Peter, worked with Peter, or argued with Peter, will miss the passing of a great American." Camejo ran for the state's top office in 2002, 2003 and 2006, supporting abortion rights, universal health care and a moratorium on the death penalty. Before joining the Green Party, he also ran for president as the Socialist Workers Party nominee in 1976. In 2004, Camejo was independent Nader's vice presidential pick. Camejo, a first-generation Venezuelan-American, was also active against the Vietnam War and a vocal advocate for migrant worker rights. He marched in Selma, Ala. with Martin Luther King, Jr. His activism also got him expelled from the University of California at Berkeley in 1967 for using a school microphone during a demonstration. A year later, then-governor Ronald Reagan put him on his list of the 10 most dangerous people in California because he was "present at all anti-war demonstrations." Last month, Camejo, who lost his hair from chemotherapy, attended the Peace and Freedom Party convention in Sacramento to endorse Nader's current bid for the presidency with running mate Matt Gonzalez. "Ralph Nader is more than a candidate, he's an issue," Camejo said in his Aug. 2 speech, adding that Nader brought true reform, offering an independent choice to the "ruling party." Nader said Camejo passed away a few days after completing his autobiography, which has a working title of "Northstar." According to a statement put out by Camejo's family on a blog that had been updating his condition, Camejo voluntarily returned home Friday after undergoing treatment at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento for a reccurrence of lymphoma. "Peter's health had declined rapidly over the last two days due to the aggressiveness of his cancer and the strength of the drugs used to combat his disease," according to the family statement. "His wife was at his side when he passed peacefully this morning." The family is planning private funeral services, and a public memorial will be arranged later. ___ http://www.votenader.org/media/2008/09/13/Camejo/ 2. Nader Issues Statement on the Passing of Friend and 2004 Running Mate, Peter Camejo Saturday, September 13, 2008 at 12:00:00 AM Press Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Toby Heaps, Nader for President, 202-441-6795 Ralph Nader Comments on the Passing of Peter Camejo, a Sentinel Force for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, and Expander of Democracy Peter Miguel Camejo, a civil rights leader, socially responsible investment pioneer, and magnanimo caballero for third party politics in the US, peacefully passed away early Saturday morning at his home in Folsom, CA with his wife Morella at his side -- only days after completing his autobiography. The 68-year-old justice fighter had been battling a reoccurrence of lymphoma cancer, and his condition had rapidly deteriorated over the past few days. Peter was a student leader, civil rights advocate, leader in the socially responsible investment industry with his own investment firm, Progressive Asset Management, Inc., and author of books on investment and history including Racism, Revolution, Reaction, 1861-1877, The Rise and Fall of Radical Reconstruction, California Under Corporate Rule, and his recent book, The SRI Advantage: Why Socially Responsible Investing Has Outperformed Financially. Peter used his eloquence, sharp wit, and barnstorming bravado to blaze a trail for 21st century third party politics in the US. He was a third party candidate for state and national office, making three gubernatorial runs in California as a Green, including one in the 2002 election when he earned 5.3 percent of the vote. In the 2003 recall election, he debated Arnold Schwarzenegger and Gray Davis, and in the 2004 Presidential election, he was my running mate on our Independent Ticket. Among the many causes Peter forcefully championed were a living wage, healthcare for all, and making the US the world leader in renewable energy. He was also a passionate advocate for electoral reform, pressing for proportional representation and internal run-off voting (allows voters to rank their top choices) in an effort to overturn the "200-year-old dysfunctional money-dominated winner take-all system that disrespects the will of the people." Peter was a friend, colleague and politically courageous champion of the downtrodden and mistreated of the entire Western Hemisphere. Everyone who met Peter, talked with Peter, worked with Peter, or argued with Peter, will miss the passing of a great American. Peter Camejo is survived by his wife Morella, his father Daniel, his daughter Alexandra, his son Victor, three brothers Antonio, Daniel, and Danny, and three grandchildren Andrew, Daniel, and Oliver. When his autobiography (with the working title Northstar) is published, we will all be able to get a vivid sense of the great measure of Peter Camejo as a sentinel force for civil rights and civil liberties, and expander of democracy. His lifework will inspire the political and economic future for a long time. http://video.google.ca/videosearch?q=peter+camejo+peace+and+freedom&hl=en&emb=0&aq=f# http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTktNX0EbCA ___ 3. http://www.sacbee.com/749/story/1234065.html Green Party activist Peter Camejo, 68, dies Bee Metro Staff Last Updated 6:20 pm PDT Saturday, September 13, 2008 Peter Camejo speaks with a reporter at his home in Folsom in September 2004, when he served as Ralph Nader's vice presidential running mate. Civil rights activist and three-time Green Party candidate for governor Peter Miguel Camejo died Saturday at his home in Folsom, according to his family. Camejo was born Dec. 31, 1939, in New York City to Elvia Guanche and Daniel Camejo Octavio. In the 1960s, Camejo attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to study math and then UC Berkeley to study history. His participation in a Vietnam War protest at UC Berkeley got him suspended from the university, but his election to the student council launched his political career. During the Vietnam War protest era, then-Gov. Ronald Reagan called Camejo one of California's 10 most dangerous citizens. Camejo, a former Walnut Creek resident, spent three years as a trustee of the Contra Costa County Employees Retirement Association. He is best known for his work as a social-justice advocate and for his work as part of the Green Party. In Folsom, he was chief executive officer of Progressive Asset Management, a financial investment firm that encourages socially responsible projects. "He was a standard bearer for the party for the last decade," said Larry Cafiero, a friend and former Green Party Liaison to the secretary of state. "He's going to be pretty hard to replace as far as social justice issues goes." Camejo and Cafiero ran together during the 2006 gubernatorial race. Cafiero spent a lot of time with Camejo during the campaign. Camejo had run for governor Advertisement in 2002 and in the 2003 recall election, garnering 5.3 percent of the vote. "It was a very enjoyable and enlightening experience," Cafiero said. "There wasn't any issue that he didn't know anything about and couldn't speak with authority on." Mike Wyman, 2006 Green Party candidate for attorney general, said in a statement issued on behalf of the Green Party of California, "We join with the Camejo family in their grief and mourn for the passing of a truly unique and exemplary individual. He will be sorely missed by us all. Peter Camejo was a man of great passion and boundless compassion for the poor, uninsured workers and for immigrant workers in their struggle for justice and legalization." In 2004, Camejo was chosen as Ralph Nader's running mate in his independent run for president. In an e-mail tribute, Nader highlighted Camejo's character. "Peter was a friend, colleague and politically courageous champion of the downtrodden and mistreated of the entire Western hemisphere," Nader wrote. "Everyone who met Peter, talked with Peter, worked with Peter, or argued with Peter, will miss the passing of a great American." Camejo, 68, had been battling lymphoma. He announced his diagnosis in January 2007. The cancer was in remission in March 2008, but doctors made a second diagnosis of lymphoma in May. Camejo's condition had deteriorated in the past few days. Camejo's wife, Morella, was at his side, Nader said. His brother, Danny, remembers Camejo as a man with a lot going for him. "He was a person who fought constantly for justice. He was an activist, an entrepreneur and he was a dedicated family," Danny Camejo said. Danny Camejo believes his brother was most proud of his political activism. Camejo had been fighting for the release of Santos Reyes, an undocumented Mexican immigrant, who is serving a 26-years-to-life prison sentence in Folsom State Prison for placing a false name on a driver's license test. The offense is normally a misdemeanor, but Reyes was charged with felony perjury. Camejo is survived by his wife, a son, Victor, a daughter, Alexandra, three brothers and three grandchildren. He was 68. Mr. Camejo, who had been battling a recurrence of lymphoma, died at home in Folsom (Sacramento County). He helped found the California Green Party in 1991 and ran three times for governor of California. He also ran as independent Ralph Nader's vice presidential running mate in the 2004 presidential election in which President Bush won a second term. In 1976 he ran for president as the Socialist Workers Party candidate. Mr. Camejo described himself as a watermelon - red on the inside, green on the outside. "Peter used his eloquence, sharp wit and barn-storming bravado to blaze a trail for 21st century third-party politics in the U.S.," Nader said in a prepared statement, which described Mr. Camejo as a "politically courageous champion of the downtrodden and mistreated of the entire Western Hemisphere." Active in the Free Speech Movement and in protests against the Vietnam War as a student at UC Berkeley in the late 1960s, Mr. Camejo landed on then-Gov. Ronald Reagan's list of the 10 most dangerous people in California. School officials eventually expelled him, two quarters shy of a degree. The spark of activism stayed with him as he became a leader in the movement to give voice to third-party candidates. He fought for universal health care, election reform, farmworker rights, living wage laws and against the death penalty and abortion restrictions. His forum was often electoral politics, where he challenged Republicans and Democrats alike. He ran for California governor in 2002, 2003 and 2006, only once breaking past the mark of 5 percent of the vote in grassroots campaigns in which he was vastly outspent by his Democratic and Republican rivals. He once told a reporter that he never expected to win, but wanted to help elevate the Greens to the mainstream political stage. Mr. Camejo earned his living as a financier and helped start an investment firm, Progressive Management Asset Inc. in Oakland. Clients can arrange their portfolios so that their investments, for example, are not linked to animal testing, weapons or sweatshop labor. He created the first environmentally screened fund - the Eco-Logical Trust - for a major Wall Street firm, Merrill Lynch. He also founded the Council for Responsible Public Investments and wrote the book, "The SRI Advantage: Why Socially Responsible Investing Has Outperformed Financially." Peter Miguel Camejo was born on New Year's Eve 1939 at a hospital in Queens, N.Y., where his mother had flown from Venezuela to use the American health care system and to give her son dual U.S.-Venezuelan citizenship. He spent the first part of his life in his parents' homeland. He moved to New York at age 7 with his mother when his parents divorced but spent summers in Latin America. He said the poverty he saw as a youth in Venezuela drove his passion for social and economic justice. After graduating from high school with a perfect score on his math SAT, he studied mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and later transferred to UC Berkeley. He never earned a degree. Matt Gonzalez, a former San Francisco supervisor who is running for vice president with Nader as an independent, said that Mr. Camejo once told him that when he interviewed for his job at Merrill Lynch, "the only thing that was true on my resume was my name and phone number." Gonzalez said Mr. Camejo was a success at Merrill Lynch, but was pushed out after the firm found out that one of its star employees had been arrested for protesting and had run for president as a socialist. Gonzalez said his friend continued to be a pioneer in the socially responsible investment movement and made a political mark, even though he did not win in any state or national election. In the days leading to his death, Mr. Camejo completed his autobiography. "We will all be able to get a vivid sense of the great measure of Peter Camejo as a sentinel force for civil rights and civil liberties, and expander of democracy. His lifework will inspire the political and economic future for a long time," Nader said. He is survived by his wife, Morella Camejo; stepdaughter Alexandra Baquera of San Diego; stepson Victor Baquera of Folsom; brothers Antonio and Daniel Camejo and Danny Ratner. Details for a memorial service will be announced. GOODMAN AND MICHAEL POWELL Published: September 13, 2008 This article is by Jo Becker, Peter S. Goodman and Michael Powell. WASILLA, Alaska ? Gov. Sarah Palin lives by the maxim that all politics is local, not to mention personal. So when there was a vacancy at the top of the State Division of Agriculture, she appointed a high school classmate, Franci Havemeister, to the $95,000-a-year directorship. A former real estate agent, Ms. Havemeister cited her childhood love of cows as a qualification for running the roughly $2 million agency. Ms. Havemeister was one of at least five schoolmates Ms. Palin hired, often at salaries far exceeding their private sector wages. When Ms. Palin had to cut her first state budget, she avoided the legion of frustrated legislators and mayors. Instead, she huddled with her budget director and her husband, Todd, an oil field worker who is not a state employee, and vetoed millions of dollars of legislative projects. And four months ago, a Wasilla blogger, Sherry Whitstine, who chronicles the governor?s career with an astringent eye, answered her phone to hear an assistant to the governor on the line, she said. ?You should be ashamed!? Ivy Frye, the assistant, told her. ?Stop blogging. Stop blogging right now!? Ms. Palin walks the national stage as a small-town foe of ?good old boy? politics and a champion of ethics reform. The charismatic 44-year-old governor draws enthusiastic audiences and high approval ratings. And as the Republican vice-presidential nominee, she points to her management experience while deriding her Democratic rivals, Senators Barack Obama and Joseph R. Biden Jr., as speechmakers who never have run anything. But an examination of her swift rise and record as mayor of Wasilla and then governor finds that her visceral style and penchant for attacking critics ? she sometimes calls local opponents ?haters? ? contrasts with her carefully crafted public image. Throughout her political career, she has pursued vendettas, fired officials who crossed her and sometimes blurred the line between government and personal grievance, according to a review of public records and interviews with 60 Republican and Democratic legislators and local officials. Still, Ms. Palin has many supporters. As a two-term mayor she paved roads and built an ice rink, and as governor she has pushed through higher taxes on the oil companies that dominate one-third of the state?s economy. She stirs deep emotions. In Wasilla, many residents display unflagging affection, cheering ?our Sarah? and hissing at her critics. ?She is bright and has unfailing political instincts,? said Steve Haycox, a history professor at the University of Alaska. ?She taps very directly into anxieties about the economic future.? ?But,? he added, ?her governing style raises a lot of hard questions.? Ms. Palin declined to grant an interview for this article. The McCain-Palin campaign responded to some questions on her behalf and that of her husband, while referring others to the governor?s spokespeople, who did not respond. Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell said Ms. Palin had conducted an accessible and effective administration in the public?s interest. ?Everything she does is for the ordinary working people of Alaska,? he said. In Wasilla, a builder said he complained to Mayor Palin when the city attorney put a stop-work order on his housing project. She responded, he said, by engineering the attorney?s firing. Interviews show that Ms. Palin runs an administration that puts a premium on loyalty and secrecy. The governor and her top officials sometimes use personal e-mail accounts for state business; dozens of e-mail messages obtained by The New York Times show that her staff members studied whether that could allow them to circumvent subpoenas seeking public records. Rick Steiner, a University of Alaska professor, sought the e-mail messages of state scientists who had examined the effect of global warming on polar bears. (Ms. Palin said the scientists had found no ill effects, and she has sued the federal government to block the listing of the bears as endangered.) An administration official told Mr. Steiner that his request would cost $468,784 to process. When Mr. Steiner finally obtained the e-mail messages ? through a federal records request ? he discovered that state scientists had in fact agreed that the bears were in danger, records show. ?Their secrecy is off the charts,? Mr. Steiner said. State legislators are investigating accusations that Ms. Palin and her husband pressured officials to fire a state trooper who had gone through a messy divorce with her sister, charges that she denies. But interviews make clear that the Palins draw few distinctions between the personal and the political. Last summer State Representative John Harris, the Republican speaker of the House, picked up his phone and heard Mr. Palin?s voice. The governor?s husband sounded edgy. He said he was unhappy that Mr. Harris had hired John Bitney as his chief of staff, the speaker recalled. Mr. Bitney was a high school classmate of the Palins and had worked for Ms. Palin. But she fired Mr. Bitney after learning that he had fallen in love with another longtime friend. ?I understood from the call that Todd wasn?t happy with me hiring John and he?d like to see him not there,? Mr. Harris said. ?The Palin family gets upset at personal issues,? he added. ?And at our level, they want to strike back.? Through a campaign spokesman, Mr. Palin said he ?did not recall? referring to Mr. Bitney in the conversation. Hometown Mayor Laura Chase, the campaign manager during Ms. Palin?s first run for mayor in 1996, recalled the night the two women chatted about her ambitions. ?I said, ?You know, Sarah, within 10 years you could be governor,? ? Ms. Chase recalled. ?She replied, ?I want to be president.? ? Ms. Palin grew up in Wasilla, an old fur trader?s outpost and now a fast-growing exurb of Anchorage. The town sits in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, edged by jagged mountains and birch forests. In the 1930s, the Roosevelt administration took farmers from the Dust Bowl area and resettled them here; their Democratic allegiances defined the valley for half a century. In the past three decades, socially conservative Oklahomans and Texans have flocked north to the oil fields of Alaska. They filled evangelical churches around Wasilla and revived the Republican Party. Many of these working-class residents formed the electoral backbone for Ms. Palin, who ran for mayor on a platform of gun rights, opposition to abortion and the ouster of the ?complacent? old guard. After winning the mayoral election in 1996, Ms. Palin presided over a city rapidly outgrowing itself. Septic tanks had begun to pollute lakes, and residential lots were carved willy-nilly out of the woods. She passed road and sewer bonds, cut property taxes but raised the sales tax. And, her supporters say, she cleaned out the municipal closet, firing veteran officials to make way for her own team. ?She had an agenda for change and for doing things differently,? said Judy Patrick, a City Council member at the time. But careers were turned upside down. The mayor quickly fired the town?s museum director, John Cooper. Later, she sent an aide to the museum to talk to the three remaining employees. ?He told us they only wanted two,? recalled Esther West, one of the three, ?and we had to pick who was going to be laid off.? The three quit as one. Ms. Palin cited budget difficulties for the museum cuts. Mr. Cooper thought differently, saying the museum had become a microcosm of class and cultural conflicts in town. ?It represented that the town was becoming more progressive, and they didn?t want that,? he said. Days later, Mr. Cooper recalled, a vocal conservative, Steve Stoll, sidled up to him. Mr. Stoll had supported Ms. Palin and had a long-running feud with Mr. Cooper. ?He said: ?Gotcha, Cooper,? ? Mr. Cooper said. Mr. Stoll did not recall that conversation, although he said he supported Ms. Palin?s campaign and was pleased when she fired Mr. Cooper. In 1997, Ms. Palin fired the longtime city attorney, Richard Deuser, after he issued the stop-work order on a home being built by Don Showers, another of her campaign supporters. Your attorney, Mr. Showers told Ms. Palin, is costing me lots of money. ?She told me she?d like to see him fired,? Mr. Showers recalled. ?But she couldn?t do it herself because the City Council hires the city attorney.? Ms. Palin told him to write the council members to complain. Meanwhile, Ms. Palin pushed the issue from the inside. ?She started the ball rolling,? said Ms. Patrick, who also favored the firing. Mr. Deuser was soon replaced by Ken Jacobus, then the State Republican Party?s general counsel. ?Professionals were either forced out or fired,? Mr. Deuser said. Ms. Palin ordered city employees not to talk to the press. And she used city money to buy a white Suburban for the mayor?s use ? employees sarcastically called it the mayor-mobile. The new mayor also tended carefully to her evangelical base. She appointed a pastor to the town planning board. And she began to eye the library. For years, social conservatives had pressed the library director to remove books they considered immoral. ?People would bring books back censored,? recalled former Mayor John Stein, Ms. Palin?s predecessor. ?Pages would get marked up or torn out.? Witnesses and contemporary news accounts say Ms. Palin asked the librarian about removing books from the shelves. The McCain-Palin presidential campaign says Ms. Palin never advocated censorship. But in 1995, Ms. Palin, then a city councilwoman, told colleagues that she had noticed the book ?Daddy?s Roommate? on the shelves and that it did not belong there, according to Ms. Chase and Mr. Stein. Ms. Chase read the book, which helps children understand homosexuality, and said it was inoffensive; she suggested that Ms. Palin read it. ?Sarah said she didn?t need to read that stuff,? Ms. Chase said. ?It was disturbing that someone would be willing to remove a book from the library and she didn?t even read it.? ?I?m still proud of Sarah,? she added, ?but she scares the bejeebers out of me.? Reform Crucible Restless ambition defined Ms. Palin in the early years of this decade. She raised money for Senator Ted Stevens, a Republican from the state; finished second in the 2002 Republican primary for lieutenant governor; and sought to fill the seat of Senator Frank H. Murkowski when he ran for governor. Mr. Murkowski appointed his daughter to the seat, but as a consolation prize, he gave Ms. Palin the $125,000-a-year chairmanship of a state commission overseeing oil and gas drilling. Ms. Palin discovered that the state Republican leader, Randy Ruedrich, a commission member, was conducting party business on state time and favoring regulated companies. When Mr. Murkowski failed to act on her complaints, she quit and went public. The Republican establishment shunned her. But her break with the gentlemen?s club of oil producers and political power catapulted her into the public eye. ?She was honest and forthright,? said Jay Kerttula, a former Democratic state senator from Palmer. Ms. Palin entered the 2006 primary for governor as a formidable candidate. In the middle of the primary, a conservative columnist in the state, Paul Jenkins, unearthed e-mail messages showing that Ms. Palin had conducted campaign business from the mayor?s office. Ms. Palin handled the crisis with a street fighter?s guile. ?I told her it looks like she did the same thing that Randy Ruedrich did,? Mr. Jenkins recalled. ?And she said, ?Yeah, what I did was wrong.? ? Mr. Jenkins hung up and decided to forgo writing about it. His phone rang soon after. Mr. Jenkins said a reporter from Fairbanks, reading from a Palin news release, demanded to know why he was ?smearing? her. ?Now I look at her and think: ?Man, you?re slick,? ? he said. Ms. Palin won the primary, and in the general election she faced Tony Knowles, the former two-term Democratic governor, and Andrew Halcro, an independent. Not deeply versed in policy, Ms. Palin skipped some candidate forums; at others, she flipped through hand-written, color-coded index cards strategically placed behind her nameplate. Before one forum, Mr. Halcro said he saw aides shovel reports at Ms. Palin as she crammed. Her showman?s instincts rarely failed. She put the pile of reports on the lectern. Asked what she would do about health care policy, she patted the stack and said she would find an answer in the pile of solutions. ?She was fresh, and she was tomorrow,? said Michael Carey, a former editorial page editor for The Anchorage Daily News. ?She just floated along like Mary Poppins.? Government Half a century after Alaska became a state, Ms. Palin was inaugurated as governor in Fairbanks and took up the reformer?s sword. As she assembled her cabinet and made other state appointments, those with insider credentials were now on the outs. But a new pattern became clear. She surrounded herself with people she has known since grade school and members of her church. Mr. Parnell, the lieutenant governor, praised Ms. Palin?s appointments. ?The people she hires are competent, qualified, top-notch people,? he said. Ms. Palin chose Talis Colberg, a borough assemblyman from the Matanuska valley, as her attorney general, provoking a bewildered question from the legal community: ?Who?? Mr. Colberg, who did not return calls, moved from a one-room building in the valley to one of the most powerful offices in the state, supervising some 500 people. ?I called him and asked, ?Do you know how to supervise people?? ? said a family friend, Kathy Wells. ?He said, ?No, but I think I?ll get some help.? ? The Wasilla High School yearbook archive now doubles as a veritable directory of state government. Ms. Palin appointed Mr. Bitney, her former junior high school band-mate, as her legislative director and chose another classmate, Joe Austerman, to manage the economic development office for $82,908 a year. Mr. Austerman had established an Alaska franchise for Mailboxes Etc. To her supporters ? and with an 80 percent approval rating, she has plenty ? Ms. Palin has lifted Alaska out of a mire of corruption. She gained the passage of a bill that tightens the rules covering lobbyists. And she rewrote the tax code to capture a greater share of oil and gas sale proceeds. ?Does anybody doubt that she?s a tough negotiator?? said State Representative Carl Gatto, Republican of Palmer. Yet recent controversy has marred Ms. Palin?s reform credentials. In addition to the trooper investigation, lawmakers in April accused her of improperly culling thousands of e-mail addresses from a state database for a mass mailing to rally support for a policy initiative. While Ms. Palin took office promising a more open government, her administration has battled to keep information secret. Her inner circle discussed the benefit of using private e-mail addresses. An assistant told her it appeared that such e-mail messages sent to a private address on a ?personal device? like a BlackBerry ?would be confidential and not subject to subpoena.? Ms. Palin and aides use their private e-mail addresses for state business. A campaign spokesman said the governor copied e-mail messages to her state account ?when there was significant state business.? On Feb. 7, Frank Bailey, a high-level aide, wrote to Ms. Palin?s state e-mail address to discuss appointments. Another aide fired back: ?Frank, this is not the governor?s personal account.? Mr. Bailey responded: ?Whoops~!? Mr. Bailey, a former midlevel manager at Alaska Airlines who worked on Ms. Palin?s campaign, has been placed on paid leave; he has emerged as a central figure in the trooper investigation. Another confidante of Ms. Palin?s is Ms. Frye, 27. She worked as a receptionist for State Senator Lyda Green before she joined Ms. Palin?s campaign for governor. Now Ms. Frye earns $68,664 as a special assistant to the governor. Her frequent interactions with Ms. Palin?s children have prompted some lawmakers to refer to her as ?the babysitter,? a title that Ms. Frye disavows. Like Mr. Bailey, she is an effusive cheerleader for her boss. ?YOU ARE SO AWESOME!? Ms. Frye typed in an e-mail message to Ms. Palin in March. Many lawmakers contend that Ms. Palin is overly reliant on a small inner circle that leaves her isolated. Democrats and Republicans alike describe her as often missing in action. Since taking office in 2007, Ms. Palin has spent 312 nights at her Wasilla home, some 600 miles to the north of the governor?s mansion in Juneau, records show. During the last legislative session, some lawmakers became so frustrated with her absences that they took to wearing ?Where?s Sarah?? pins. Many politicians say they typically learn of her initiatives ? and vetoes ? from news releases. Mayors across the state, from the larger cities to tiny municipalities along the southeastern fiords, are even more frustrated. Often, their letters go unanswered and their pleas ignored, records and interviews show. Last summer, Mayor Mark Begich of Anchorage, a Democrat, pressed Ms. Palin to meet with him because the state had failed to deliver money needed to operate city traffic lights. At one point, records show, state officials told him to just turn off a dozen of them. Ms. Palin agreed to meet with Mr. Begich when he threatened to go public with his anger, according to city officials. At an Alaska Municipal League gathering in Juneau in January, mayors across the political spectrum swapped stories of the governor?s remoteness. How many of you, someone asked, have tried to meet with her? Every hand went up, recalled Mayor Fred Shields of Haines Borough. And how many met with her? Just a few hands rose. Ms. Palin soon walked in, delivered a few remarks and left for an anti-abortion rally. The administration?s e-mail correspondence reveals a siege-like atmosphere. Top aides keep score, demean enemies and gloat over successes. Even some who helped engineer her rise have felt her wrath. Dan Fagan, a prominent conservative radio host and longtime friend of Ms. Palin, urged his listeners to vote for her in 2006. But when he took her to task for raising taxes on oil companies, he said, he found himself branded a ?hater.? It is part of a pattern, Mr. Fagan said, in which Ms. Palin characterizes critics as ?bad people who are anti-Alaska.? As Ms. Palin?s star ascends, the McCain campaign, as often happens in national races, is controlling the words of those who know her well. Her mother-in-law, Faye Palin, has been asked not to speak to reporters, and aides sit in on interviews with old friends. At a recent lunch gathering, an official with the Wasilla Chamber of Commerce asked its members to refer all calls from reporters to the governor?s office. Dianne Woodruff, a city councilwoman, shook her head. ?I was thinking, I don?t remember giving up my First Amendment rights,? Ms. Woodruff said. ?Just because you?re not going gaga over Sarah doesn?t mean you can?t speak your mind.? -- Tian http://tian.greens.org Latest: Added free "POWER TO THE PEOPLE - McKinney 2008" sticker offer. Where's the outrage? Maybe with unemployment and 401k losses people will be inclined to hang out more on the street. Maybe we could draw a crowd on a Saturday night downtown from those more inclined to come over to St. James Park and less inclined to drink $4 beers in the clubs--if we give them some entertainment like music or theater. I doubt we can get permits for amplified music, and obviously we wouldn't get a permit for alcohol. It would be hard to compete with the clubs without those two things. I don't know if there are any legal herbs and stuff we could brew up in tea. Without some kind of kick, I don't think people would bother with the park. Or the street. ---------------------------------------- > Date: Sat, 20 Sep 2008 22:15:44 -0700 > From: j.m.doyle at sbcglobal.net > To: sosfbay-discuss at cagreens.org > Subject: [Sosfbay-discuss] should we take to the strets > > Naomi Klein has an artilce at > http://www.commondreams.org/view/2008/09/20-5 > concerning the ebb and flow of free market ideology > with the warning that it will return. > > Furthermore, she writes that it will be necessary to take the streets > as was done in the 30s to effect a solution or at least a change. > > Is her assessment correct? > Is taking to the streets the answer, an answer, the best answer? > If so, how doeds it get implemented? > > > > _______________________________________________ > sosfbay-discuss mailing list > sosfbay-discuss at cagreens.org > http://lists.cagreens.org/mailman/listinfo/sosfbay-discuss _________________________________________________________________ See how Windows Mobile brings your life together?at home, work, or on the go. http://clk.atdmt.com/MRT/go/msnnkwxp1020093182mrt/direct/01/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Which is why I raised the issue of candidates' allegiance with anti-semites after the forum on the 9th. Raising the issue later amongst some mutual friends of Carol Brouillet's and mine, I'm quite dismayed at the lack of interest in the subject. Has the Green Party not established a policy on these things? I consider anti-semitism to be the death of any political effort--on pragmatic grounds as well as moral ones. The Green Party has the potential to pursue important work by clearly defining a posture opposing the obvious crimes of Israel while creating an environment where Jews feel welcome. Candidates' expressions of support for notorious bigots should not go by without comment-- and sanctions. Dear Senator Boxer: As one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, California is poised to take a leadership role in stopping global warming even if the United States does not. However, real change will need to happen in Washington DC to tackle this issue, so I am thankful that this is an issue that we both care about. First, we need to seriously fund public transit and high speed rail in California and in major metropolitan areas instead of spending billions in the coming years expanding our highways and airports. Second, we need to put serious pressure on the auto industry to produce green vehicles. Plug-in hybrid and electric vehicle technologies were available a decade ago, but GM decided to scrap the EV1. Learning from past mistakes, we need to increase our CAFE standards for cars to 60mpg and 45mpg for light trucks by 2012 if we are to reach the target of an 80% reduction in our greenhouse gas emissions by 2025. The current plan for 80% by 2050 is not enough if we are to stop global warming, even though vague and distant goals may be more politically convenient. Lastly, we need to show the world that we mean business when we talk about getting rid of our addiction to dirty fuels such as oil. There is too much talk about biofuels such as ethanol and other unclean, non-sustainable energy sources for our nation's vehicles. We need to seriously invest in converting to a solar economy with 100% electric cars. Gasoline, ethanol, and hydrogen are not the ways of the future, despite what big auto and oil companies are telling Congress and ordinary Americans. We also need to adopt a nuclear-free energy policy, a policy that the Republicans are going to do a major push for in the near future. The Democratic Party CANNOT give in to nuclear lobbyists and the conservative agenda! Thank you for prioritizing the future of transportation in our country and I hope to hear your thoughts about these matters soon. It may sound like a boring subject, but I guess it is likely to be a hot topic soon. http://www.commondreams.org/view/2008/09/22-10 ============================================================ [From the article] According to Marketwatch, the derivatives market is somewhere around $500 trillion. No, that's not a typo. That's trillion. To put it in perspective, Marketwatch reminds us that the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) is about $15 trillion. The GDP of all nations combined is approximately $50 trillion. The total value of all the real estate in the world is estimated at $75 trillion and the total value of all the world's stocks and bonds is about $100 trillion. But there's a $500 trillion market in derivatives! If you find this all confusing, we're in good company. Because "what we are witnessing is essentially the breakdown of our modern-day banking system, a complex of leveraged lending so hard to understand that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke required a face-to-face refresher course from hedge fund managers in mid August," Bond fund giant Bill Gross told Marketwatch. Marketwatch goes on to observe: "In short, not only Warren Buffett, but Gross, Bernanke, the Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and the rest of America's leaders can't 'figure out' the world's $516 trillion derivatives." ============================================================= If I read that right, no one has a really good idea what will happen next, except maybe Nader: "Fleecing What's Left of the Treasury" http://www.commondreams.org/view/2008/09/22-3 ... It seems possible that if you hand out a blank check, the sccount the blank check is on might get emptied. On the other hand, I think it is probably true that if the government does nothing, things could get pretty bad too. Pennsylvanian State Senator Mike Folmer has officially introduced SB 1578. Ballot Access News says that "it defines a qualified minor party to be a group with registration equal to one-twentieth of 1%. If it were law now, the Constitution, Green and Libertarian Parties would be on the ballot automatically. They would nominate by convention. The law is based on Delaware?s law. The bill sharply reduces the number of signatures for independent candidates. There isn?t much time left this year for the legislature to act, but if it doesn?t pass this year, Senator Folmer will reintroduce it next year." I think it would be a good idea if we got Greens from all around the country to write to his office in support of this bill. Unfortunately, Cynthia McKinney is not on the ballot in Pennsylvania, but if she were, we'd be on enough state ballots to have over 72% of the EV. If this bill passes, we are on the ballot for the 2012 presidential elections and any state elections in the next few years. -Edward Dear State Senator Folmer: I am very excited to see the progress that has been made since I last contacted your office in July 2008. SB 1578 is a crucial milestone in strengthening our country's democracy, because it will give voters more options when they go to the polls. It is especially important that Pennsylvania is taking a leading role in strengthening the democracy of this country, because of its notoriously restrictive and archaic ballot access laws. Americans from across the country will be paying attention to this bill and we look forward to the passage of SB 1578. Something remarkable happened in Canada on September 10, and it offers an example of what ought to be possible in the United States. Canada's television networks decided to exclude the leader of the country's Green Party from nationally televised debates between the major party candidates competing in the country's October 14 election. Though the Greens hold only one seat in Parliament, the party - like its US equivalent - is highly organized, has won many local offices and is competing in a sufficient number of constituencies to form a government. Green leader Elizabeth May launched a national campaign urging Canadians to "reclaim democracy" by demanding a place in the debates. Canadians responded, dispatching e-mails, letters and phone calls to the networks and the major-party leaders. Former Canadian Prime Minister Joe Clark, who governed as a Progressive Conserva- tive, joined the crusade, declaring, "The immediate question about Canada's election is not who will win but how open and inclusive the campaign will be. Elections can confirm bad practices or change them. Ours need changing." The day Clark spoke up, the networks and the major parties backed down, allowing May in. We need a similar outcry in the United States. Excluding the Green nominee Cynthia McKinney, Libertarian Bob Barr, independ- ent Ralph Nader and their running mates - all of whom will be on enough ballots to conceivably, if not realistically, win the presidency - is not just undemocratic; it will narrow the quality of the discourse in the upcoming presidential and vice presidential debates. Canada will have multiparty debates this fall. The United States should as well. Based on my notes and memory, it's a summary of why we chose to to back certain ballot initiatives. If any plenary delegates cc'd on this list want to add their two cents about why we voted as we did, please do so ASAP. (When we reached consensus right away, I didn't necessarilly have time to write why in my notes.) That's why we need to convince people to vote Green, not Red and not Blue! Vote for anybody but the two Major Parties! The growing coalition of Independent, Peace and Freedom, Green, and Libertarian has now pulled in the Constitution (?) party. Those combined numbers should be hailed as a block vote against the two Major Parties, especially when fueled by the 4-part platform agreed to by the first four groups (Nader and McKinney were the very first that I heard to shake friendly, congratulatory hands across the aisle). This is an historic moment when these fragmented parties have reached out to agree TOGETHER on legislation (the 4-part platform) that makes them stand out from the two Majors! BTW, did anyone hear that Andrea Dorey and another KPFA listener put the fundraising total over the top with our large contributions? Did you also hear the hosts announce that Andrea is a member of the Green Party?? Can you spell "political capital"??? Expect more song and dance, smoke and mirrors. ... FWIW, it is my guess that if Washington does nothing about the economic crisis, the future will be grim. The reason I opposed this bailout is that I suspect that the future would be even more grim with this bailout. I don't know the right answer, but I would pay attention to Ralph Nader, Bernie Sanders, Dennis Kucinich, and Paul Krugman, all of whom rejected Paulson's plan. And I would like to see the laws and regulatory agencies restored to where they were after all the depression era reforms were passed. 1936? 1940? 1944? Obviously Congress must consider quickly another course. There are immediate issues which demand attention and responsible action by the Congress so that the taxpayers, their assets, and their futures are protected. We MUST do something to protect millions of Americans whose homes, bank deposits, investments, and pensions are at risk in a financial system that has become seriously corrupted. We are told that we must stabilize markets in order for the people to be protected. I think we need to protect peoples' homes, bank deposits, investments, and pensions, to order to stabilize the market. We cannot delay taking action. But the action must benefit all Americans, not just a privileged few. Otherwise, more plans will fail, and the financial security of everyone will be at risk. The $700 billion bailout would have added to our existing unbearable load of national debt, trade deficits, and the cost of paying for the war. It would have been a disaster for the American public and the government for decades and maybe even centuries to come. To be sure, there are many different reasons why people voted against the bailout. The legislation did not regard in any meaningful way the plight of millions of Americans who are about to lose their homes. It did nothing to strengthen existing regulatory structures or impose new ones at the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Federal Reserve in order to protect investors. There were no direct protections for bank depositors. There was nothing to stop further speculation, which is what brought us into this mess in the first place. This was a bailout for some firms (and investors) on Wall Street, with the idea that in doing so there would be certain, unspecified, general benefits to the economy. This is a perfect time to open a broader discussion about our financial system, especially our monetary system. Such a discussion is like searching for a needle in a haystack, and then, upon finding it, discussing its qualities at great length. Let me briefly describe the haystack instead. Here is a very quick explanation of the $700 billion bailout within the context of the mechanics of our monetary and banking system: The taxpayers loan money to the banks. But the taxpayers do not have the money. So we have to borrow it from the banks to give it back to the banks. But the banks do not have the money to loan to the government. So they create it into existence (through a mechanism called fractional reserve) and then loan it to us, at interest, so we can then give it back to them. Confused? This is the system. This is the standard mechanism used to expand the money supply on a daily basis not a special one designed only for the "$700 billion" transaction. People will explain this to you in many different ways, but this is what it comes down to. The banks needed Congress' approval. Of course in this topsy turvy world, it is the banks which set the terms of the money they are borrowing from the taxpayers. And what do we get for this transaction? Long term debt enslavement of our country. We get to pay back to the banks trillions of dollars ($700 billion with compounded interest) and the banks give us their bad debt which they cull from everywhere in the world. Who could turn down a deal like this? I did. The globalization of the debt puts the United States in the position that in order to repay the money that we borrow from the banks (for the banks) we could be forced to accept International Monetary Fund dictates which involve cutting health, social security benefits and all other social spending in addition to reducing wages and exploiting our natural resources. This inevitably leads to a loss of economic, social and political freedom. Under the failed $700 billion bailout plan, Wall Street's profits are Wall Street's profits and Wall Street's losses are the taxpayers' losses. Profits are capitalized. Losses are socialized. We are at a teachable moment on matters of money and finance. In the coming days and weeks, I will share with you thoughts about what can be done to take us not just in a new direction, but in a new direction which is just.
