Religious communities provided much of the steam behind the anti-Vietnam-war
movement, the civil rights movement, and support of the Farmworkers' union.
Common causes engendered cooperative projects among various doctrines.
The Berrigan Brothers and the Maryknoll nuns, William Sloane Coffin, and Dr.
Martin Luther King were influential activists.

That was the day, when clergymen were known for pacifism instead of pederasty.

In the defence of Christians, Christianity is not a homogeneous group. There are many Christians who were against the War in Iraq (e.g. Pope John Paul II), defended the rights of those oppressed by American imperialism (e.g. Archbishop Oscar Romero), worked with the poor (e.g. Dorothy Day), and the list goes on. Christianity is about promoting all aspects of life, not just the issues that the Christian Right prioritise.

In fact, the Catholic Church has been a big critic of capitalism and totalitarianism, first set forth in Pope Leo XIII's encyclical Rerum Novarum. There's a fairly good article on Wikipedia that gives an introduction to Catholic Social Teaching.
