Dear single payer activists,

The effort to pass SB 810 has taken an important step forward through the formation of a statewide coalition, the Campaign for a Healthy California, consisting of pro-single payer organizations from around the state.  The Campaign's purpose is to organize the movement more effectively, through the inclusion of target constituencies, the formation of regional coalitions, improvement of media and educational work, and better coordination of strategy and tactics.

The Campaign is being formed because the single payer forces see that our efforts must be ramped up in order to create the political environment and the movement to get our legislation enacted.

Project Coordinator for the Campaign, Cindy Young(formerly with California School Employees Association, now with California Nurses Association), attended the July 7 meeting of the Santa Clara County Single Payer Healthcare Coalition to lay out the new plan and to learn about our work.  Our countywide coalition, organizing educational events, legislative visits, and mobilizations for the last five years, readily fits into the framework of the Campaign as one of the regional coalitions.  I volunteered to serve as a regional coordinator, to communicate between our Coalition and the Campaign's state steering committee.

On a conference call of regional coordinators, on July 14, we learned that a statewide events calendar has been set up, to be followed soon by a website.  We also plan kickoff events for the Campaign in all regions this fall, to involve new folks, raise money, and build for next year's big push.

At our next local Coalition meeting, on Tuesday, August 2, 11am, at the Low Income Self-Help Center, 525 West Alma St., San Jose, we will start to plan our contribution to the Campaign for a Healthy California in the months ahead.  Please attend and/or get involved in any way you can.  With all the attacks on the well-being of ordinary working people, we need single payer now more than ever!
