We want to be sure that you have a chance to see him speak and meet him in person while he?s in town. This will be an opportunity to hear about the large-scale civil disobedience that?s been taking place in front of the White House in protest of the proposed Keystone XL project (a tar sands crude oil pipeline that would run from Alberta, Canada through six Midwestern states to the Gulf of Mexico), and also to learn more about our upcoming global day of action, Moving Planet, on September 24. Please take a moment to check out the details of Bill?s speaking events, listed below. There will be 350.org staff or volunteers on hand at each of them to make sure you?re able to plug in to the Bay Area Moving Planet event on 9/24. We hope to see you there! What is 350? 350 is the number that leading scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. Scientists measure carbon dioxide in "parts per million" (ppm), so 350ppm is the number humanity needs to get below as soon as possible to avoid runaway climate change. To get there, we need a different kind of PPM?a "people powered movement" that is made of people like you in every corner of the planet. -- You can unsubscribe from this mailing list at any time. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... One day after I published my blog post on "3D Politics,"none other than the old gray New York Times finally, grugingly published a story about the German Greens. You can read the full textcross-posted on California Greening and leave acomment. I am still trying to spark a serious discussion among independentprogressives about just what exactly makes us different from run-of-the-millso-called liberal Democrats. Alex Walker Los Angeles Greens = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Posted on California Greening 3D Politics - Die Gr?nen By Alex Walker The United States may be stuck on stupid with our ridiculous permanentpresidential campaign between so-called conservative Republicans andso-called liberal Democrats, but everywhere else Green Parties are on the move. The Alliance 90/The Greens party(B?ndnis 90/Die Gr?nen)in Germany is the world's strongest Green Party.Founded in 1980 and merging in 1993 with the civil rights movementB?ndnis 90 of the formerGerman Democratic Republic (a.k.a. East Germany), Greens have been representedin the German Bundestag for nearly thirty years. In our time of global crisis, even the old gray New York Times has at lastgrudgingly admitted that Greens are on the move in disparate countries likeAustralia, Brazil, Britain, Canada, Colombia, and Sweden. Screen shot from a web site for the German Greens I am reposting the article from the NYT because it is a perfectfollow-up to my earlier post on 3D politics. Published in The New York Times, September 1, 2011 Greens Gain in Germany, and the World Takes Notice By Nicholas Kulish BERLIN ? A string of Green Party victories and strong electoralshowings across Germany, from the conservative south to the port citiesof the north, are helping to redefine politics among voters who areincreasingly losing faith in the more established parties. The Green Party is poised to extend its march into the mainstream onSunday when voters go to the polls in the northeastern state ofMecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The Greens could, for the first time, win seats in the State Parliament and demonstrate their ability tosustain political momentum. "Nothing in our political science books has prepared us for this kind of party,"said Josef Joffe, publisher of the weekly newspaper Die Zeit, who noted that the Greens have won the culture war on the left over the rustySocial Democrats on issues like gay rights and the integration of immigrants."I bet if you had a party like this in America, all my rich friends on both coasts would vote for it." . . . (a) The interviews average 15 minutes, total 2 hours. I think we could benefit a lot from producing YouTube segments, but I don't know that we have enough high-profile Greens to find much of an audience for hours of 15-minute interviews. I think we might communicate more by saying less: I'm gradually developing some experience in producing short videos, e.g., for YouTube, consisting of slide shows with narrative. Then we can promote them via a presence on Twitter and maybe Facebook. My first video was 2 minutes and has generated 280 views on YouTube since April 16. ("Proposed: International Center For Monitoring Conflict Evolution", which some of you have seen.) My second video will be 5 minutes (for my business). However, before we can do more with this, I think we should get our web site to support blogging from people who haven't spend half their lives with computers. Best Wishes, Spencer (a) There is a Wiki page for each of the 8 politicians interviewed; some but not all have both English and German language Wiki pages. p.s. The modern German Green party is a union of "Alliance 90" of 3 East German non-communist parties with the earlier German Greens. However, that doesn't mean that 9/11 wasn't an inside job in some other way.? As an example, consider the reports of cell phone conversations and voicemails recorded allegedly from flight 93.? One of the 9/11 truth web sites claimed that someone had done a test to see if you could get a cell phone carried aloft in a Cesna aircraft at 200 mph and 8000 ft elevation to communicate with the ground. The test was a complete failure.? No communication was established with the ground during this test. This in my mind says that the claims of cell phone communications by passengers of flight 93 with places on the ground are false. A Japanese technical innovation has the potential to double or triple the power generated by wind turbines. 2. Germany now gets over 20% of its energy from low-carbon sources: 6.5% wind, 5.6% biomass, 3.5% solar, 3.3% hydro and 0.8% other. 3. Over 100 companies are researching wave energy , which will likely provide 180 gigawatts of power by 2050. It takes the world?s 440 nuclear power reactors to produce 376 GWe at the moment, so this would be equivalent to building 220 new nuclear plants. 4. Global wind power installation rebounded in the first half of 2011, growing 18% more than in the same period in 2010. By the end of 2011, wind will account for 3% of the world?s energy, but that percentage is rapidly growing. 5. The European Union is cooperating with Egypt to make the latter country a solar and wind powerhouse. I was told by Egyptian activists in July of this year that the Mubarak government had given renewables short shrift because of Saudi Arabian pressure. 6. Europe gets 5.5% of its energy from wind turbines, but for individual member states the amount can be much greater. Denmark gets a quarter of its electricity from wind power, while substantial wind power producers include Portugal and Germany. 7. The Japanese political political establishment has decided to throw a lot of money at renewable energy. The so-called feed-in tariff will spur growth so much that Japan?s solar energy production will like grow by a factor of 5 in the short term. 8. The good news is that new and more efficient solar panels are daily coming on line . The bad news is that Solyndria was done in by this development to some extent. The real meaning of the failure of Solyndria last week is that there were better and more efficient competitors, not that solar energy doesn?t pay or that the US has gone in for it too fast. 9. China?s wind energy market is booming , with the Asian giant having added over 8 gigawatts in wind energy capacity in the first half of 2011. China constitutes 43% of the world market for wind turbines, and its demand is rising quickly. 10. The ?Light Middle East? exhibit in Dubai will underline Middle Eastern building techniques that minimize the use of energy. Muslim architects have for centuries been masters at using courtyards and fountains to cool buildings naturally. . The lead investigator for NIST's $20 million study, Dr. Shyam Sunder, told NOVA in 2006 that the towers came down in 9 seconds and 11 seconds, which would be free fall. This comports with NIST's 2005 report (Section 6.14.4 of NCSTAR 1) that says "the building section above came down essentially in free fall, as seen in videos." In August 2006 NIST issued a FAQ statement saying that they had measured the time for debris freefalling outside the building structure, finding it struck the ground in 9 seconds and 11 seconds. Dr. Sunder's statement is clearly about the buildings, not falling debris. The Deutsche Bank/Banker's Trust building south across Liberty Street from the south tower had a huge gash ripped down its front and was abandoned and ultimately torn down. The World Financial Center (WFC) across West Street had a multi-ton steel component embedded in its wall, and perimeter column elements fell on the WFC Winter Garden as much as 550 feet away from the tower's footprint. Steel debris also punched holes in the Verizon Building north across Vesey Street, and apparently some hit World Trade Center 7 as well. David Chandler, a high school physics instructor has done a frame-by-frame analysis of one of the videos and concludes that one steel structural component was hurled horizontally at velocities exceeding 70 mph. Mr. Chandler believes these velocities reflect explosive expulsion from the building. I'm reserving judgment on that, myself. Much of the debris from the towers fell outside the footprint. I don't know if anyone has tried to quantify it. It is unfortunate that the crime scene was scrubbed with no effort to map the site. Every steel assembly was marked with a stamped ID number (to ensure that it was installed in the right place) and so a map of what piece landed where would have been very useful in evaluating various collapse theories. According to the official piledriver theory of Dr. Bazant, debris from the top "block" should have been all together at the top of the debris pile. More widely scattered top debris would suggest a different collapse mechanism. The official lead investigator, Shyam Sunder, told NOVA that the site was scrubbed because of the need for search and rescue operations. This was a blatant lie. Rescue operations were terminated after a week, while the scoop-and-dump evidence scrubbing went on for months over the protests of family members, firefighters, and engineers who wanted a scientific study of the rubble. The cleanup was so careless that the intact body of a man in a business suit was found in the rubble at Fresh Kills landfill across the river. Debris from 47-story WTC7 did not range as far, but pretty much confined itself to a tidy pile that extended across the streets from WTC7's footprint. The collapse did tear off some of the stone cladding from the neighboring Verizon Building, and damaged Fiterman Hall of the Borough of Manhattan Community College. The damage does not appear to be severe, but the building was eventually torn down. If Wikipedia can be believed it stood until 2009 before it was torn down. I think we need new investigations of what happened at Ground Zero because the official reports are incomplete. Though NIST was charged with explaining why and how the buildings came down, they terminated their analysis at the moment of collapse initiation, which allowed them to dodge the most baffling aspects of the buildings' demise: the collapses' symmetry, speed, and totality; the pulverization of 180,000 tons of concrete floors; the molten steel found in the rubble pile; and the collapse of the lower core, which had survived the initial collapse of the outer floors. I also think the reports are dishonest. Their initial estimates of airplane damage ranged from 1 core column severed to 6 severed. When their moderate estimate of 3 failed to generate a collapse in their computer models, they assumed the worst case scenario, and tweaked the input parameters to maximize damage to the core. They threw out empirical studies of truss behavior under heating when the results were not dramatic enough for them. They failed to follow up on FEMA's call for further study of "evaporated" steel, and went so far as to claim that the evaporated sample did not exist. Their answer to questions admits that they terminated their computer model at collapse initiation because after that their models failed to converge. Does that mean what I think it means? That every time they ran their model it generated a chaotic asymmetrical and possibly partial collapse as the laws of physics would predict? In the Building 7 report Mr. Chandler forced them to admit that the structure came down at freefall acceleration for a period of 2.25 seconds. NIST's Dr. Sunder had already stated that freefall means there was no structural support at all. The near-perfect symmetry of the collapse requires that all the supporting structure be removed simultaneously. The video I recommended a week or so ago has now achieved over 300,000 views, and the viewing rate is increasing. Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth now has 1500 architects and engineers calling for new investigations--50 of them structural engineers, and 40 of them high rise architects. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZEvA8BCoBw Date: Thu, 8 Sep 2011 02:48:42 -0700 From: spencer.graves at prodsyse.com To: snug.bug at hotmail.com CC: pagesincolor at yahoo.com; cbrouillet at igc.org; sosfbay-discuss at cagreens.org Subject: Re: [GPSCC-chat] 9/11 Reclaiming the Truth, Reclaiming Our Future Hi, Brian: Thanks for this. I will be out of town on both dates. The end goal is about prosperity in terms of greater wellbeing, in terms of greater equality, in terms of having a cleaner environment, in terms of having more security for your kids in the future." In my judgment, the primary constraints on economic growth in poorer countries (which she mentioned) is US support for state terror internationally, which has increased dramatically under the rubric of the war on terror: If the US stops supporting the agents of state terror internationally and works to make the world safe for peaceful assembly, the poor people of the world will be better able to control the corruption in their governments that keeps them poor. (See Chomsky, 2006, Failed States, Owl Books, p. 149 and elsewhere where he cites Thomas Carothers, "who identifies his stand as neo-Reagonite", who found a "puzzling consistency -- commonly called "inconsistency" that the US opposed democracy except when it also supported US international business interests; Carothers, 2004, Critical Mission, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.) I think we can make economic growth a priority in the US in part by internalizing externalities into the price the consumer sees: If the consumer has to pay substantially more for products made by more polluting technologies, products made by greener technologies will be more price competitive. Doing this would use the market mechanism work to improve the environment (Wikipedia, "Free-market environmentalism"). One example would be adding the cost of the war in Iraq to the price of gasoline at the pump. Dear friends, Have you been noticing the weather getting wilder where you live, and in the news around the world? Well, we wanted to share with you an exciting global event from our partners that will help connect the dots between the wild weather we?re seeing, climate change, and why it's so important we push the planet beyond fossil fuels. The event is called 24 Hours of Reality?-- it?s happening THIS WEDNESDAY, Sep 14th, and it will be a 24-hour worldwide marathon all about the reality of the climate crisis. Around the world, from New York City to South Africa to the Solomon Islands, people will use the power of the Internet to present their stories of living with climate change, and make clear the connection between extreme weather and the corporate carbon pollution that's changing our climate. All the presentations, which will be in multiple languages, and in every single time zone, will be streamed live at ClimateRealityProject.org. Check out the video below: 24 Hours of Reality is being spearheaded by Vice President Al Gore, one of the first champions to explain that 350 is the most important number on the planet. Many of us within the 350 movement already get the basic science and reality of climate change -- yet we sometimes struggle with getting our friends to really grasp the urgency. This event is a great opportunity to help your friends see why you care so much (plus, you can always pick up a new communication tip or two). I'll be calling up my friends to gather around my laptop, with some nearby snacks -- and you can invite folks too. There are also a bunch of public viewing events you can check out. The timing of 24 Hours of Reality couldn't be more perfect -- it's just 10 days before Moving Planet, the global day of bike rallies and on-the-ground events to call for climate action. It's that one-two kick of awareness and activism that's got me really excited. At the end of many of the Climate Reality Presentations there will be a plug for joining Moving Planet actions -- so we can all move together from knowledge to action. We hope you?ll be watching Wednesday too! Onwards, May Boeve, for the 350.org team PS: This event isn't just an opportunity to strengthen the movement -- it's a tool to help us grow it. We can't afford to execute people who might be innocent ? let alone people who probably are. The last chance for remedy of this egregious injustice is an appeal for clemency to the Georgia Pardons and Parole Board. Clemency in Davis' case does not mean setting him free but instead converting his death sentence to life in prison without parole ? that way, if his verdict is ever reversed at least he will be alive to see it.Davis has been scheduled for execution three times before, and three times his execution has been stayed amid doubts and new evidence against other suspects. Davis was sentenced on the basis of witness testimony, but seven of nine original witnesses have since recanted or changed their testimony. It is definitive, not waffling. I think it explains things at a level that many can understand. It shows that the adverse consequences are now. It asks people to talk to the politicians. I am not happy that the hosts / hostesses and their clothing appear to be chosen to be like U.S. news anchors, but maybe it works. There is an element that is the same every hour, but there is variation in accordance with who is in the time zone where it is 7PM. Maybe that is the time to get a larger audience. It's good that the audience keeps growing, (now at 2,900,000). But that is still a small part of the total population. Especially when considering that it is now "in Beijing". Fortunately, each segment apparently remains to be seen later. In my case, it was any orange in the toe of my Xmas stocking. That's a real loss of the feeling of being alive. I rarely buy things out of season because I am a family farmer and I know when most things are available. It's a delight for me when my apricots are ripe, and watermelon, and apples, and walnuts! I wait with anticipation for those wonderful flavors. The rest of the year, if I haven't frozen or stored away, I do without those things. I foresee a time when people are going to have something like a "victory garden"?when they will grow things they can have without needing a ration ticket! At the June 23 meeting we agreed to schedule time on the San Jose Peace & Justice Center's calendar (http://www.sanjosepeace.org/calendar.php) for November 17 (instead of the 24th) and December 15 (instead of the 22nd). We weren't sure if we would actually meet both months, but we consensed to reserve the time on the calendar so we wouldn't have to scramble for a spot at the last minute. I just checked, and we're on the calendar for both time slots. Do you still want to have something on the agenda about the November & December meetings, or were you just concerned about the original dates? I support Sasha's recommendation, to e-contact Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles, to ask they reconsider their decision to deny clemency for Troy Davis. As not all who care about this issue may want to compose a letter from scratch, I enclose an email I just sent Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles at Clemency_Information at pap.state.ga.us?subject=Please%20reconsider%20Troy%20Davis%20case%21 I urge all Greens, and those who read this, to immediately write and send a letter. As ever, Sandy Stiassni Hello Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles, I write as a private citizen, a native not of Georgia, but of New York, and current resident of California. I'm in receipt of news that Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles just issued a denial of clemency for Troy Davis. While this is to express my disappointment at your decision, to not save the life of a man accused of murder, as to his guilt there remains so much doubt, I want you to know my thoughts are also focused on the tragic waste of the life of Officer Mark MacPhail; I keep his family, and families of all victims, in my prayers. As Georgia native, former State representative and Congresswomen Cynthia McKinney so plaintively stated, "To ignore any shadow of doubt that you might harbor will definitely cost a young man his life and Georgia will reenter the annals of a history that we all have worked so hard to reconstruct." I ask you carefully reconsider your decision, that you vacate this penalty of death, and commute the sentence of Troy Davis. Thank you for your kind consideration. Alternatively, is it feasible to try to organize something similar in the South Bay, e.g., petitioning the appropriate officials here for instant runoff voting? This sounds to me like the best thing, but I don't have time or energy to organize any such event. (Photo:takomabibelot) In the 2010 US Supreme Court case, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the judges of the highest court in the land narrowly ruled that corporations were "people" with First Amendment free speech rights. The corollary of this judgment is that corporations, as "persons," have the right to contribute unlimited funds to political campaigns as an exercise of their free speech. On the one-year anniversary of the landmark decision, a survey conducted by Hart Research found that only 22 percent of American voters were even familiar with the Citizens United case. However, the same study showed that nearly four in five (79 percent) of Americans were in favor of passing an amendment to overturn the decision and clarify that corporations should not have the same rights as people. Accordingly, numerous groups have pushed for action in response to the case - and some have met with recent success, particularly at the local level. One such organization, the national Move to Amendcampaign, has approached the issue by mobilizing grassroots activism and calling for an amendment to the US Constitution to establish that only human beings, not corporations, are entitled to constitutional rights, and that the First Amendment does not protect unlimited political spending as free speech. The organization states that its first priority this year is to help organize communities aiming to pass localresolutions. On August 16, the City Council of Boulder, Colorado, voted to place a referendum on this year's November ballot calling for the US Constitution to be amended to reflect that corporations are not people and money does not equal speech. However, according to the leading proponent of the measure, Carolyn Bninski, it was an uphill battle with the city council. "City council was divided from the start; some said it wasn't a 'local' issue, so we didn't have any business putting it out there for voters to decide - basically they called it a waste of time," Bninski said. Additionally, Bninski cited opposition from council members on grounds that the language of the resolution was too vague and may harm nonprofits and other organizations that are also protected under the umbrella term "corporation." Bninski is a leading volunteer of the committee that is organizing the Issue 2H campaign, and says that the issue is about more than just getting people to pass a referendum in Boulder. "This isn't just about Boulder overturning the decision made in the Citizens United case," she said. "It's about educating people and getting them involved in our political process to reclaim our democracy." Even if the measure passes this fall, however, the success would only be symbolic. An amendment to the US Constitution requires a two-thirds supermajority in both the House and Senate and ratification by three-quarters of state Legislatures. Another route to amending the Constitution would be to call for a Convention of the US Legislature by two-thirds of the state Legislatures, followed by ratification of the amendment by three-quarters of the states. Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap, a member of the Move to Amend Executive Committee, pointed out the substantial power of a symbolic document such as a local resolution. "The Declaration of Independence was also once just a symbolic document," she said. "But it was the foundation of this country, and it sparked a revolution." Not every community has faced the difficulties that Boulder has in proposing similar ballot measures. Cynthia Wolken, a member of city council in Missoula, Montana, was the driving force behind presenting a resolution to her fellow council members. Wolken put forward a resolution in August, after voicing concern about the influence of money in Montana's politics and the use of political action committees (PACs) to control elections. "[City council] could have just passed a resolution stating that Missoula does not recognize corporations as human beings at a meeting without calling for the issue to go to the ballot, but the public would likely not even be aware of it," Wolken said "I wanted to use the opportunity to educate people and show unity in our community that Missoula supports amending the US Constitution." Missoula's referendum on this November's ballot comes at a time when Montana's corporate finance laws are at a crossroads. Wednesday, September 21, the Montana Supreme Court heard oral arguments from "friends of the court" in order to decide whether to toss out the state's century-old state ban on direct corporate spending for or against the candidates. The main conservative lobbying group challenging the law, the American Tradition Partnership (ATP), has deemed the ban "unconstitutional," since the 2010 Citizens United ruling states that the federal government could not ban political spending in elections by corporations, and federal law trumps state law. Montana's Supreme Court justices were skeptical of keeping the state law in place because it conflicted with federal law, but also voiced concern about the plaintiff's own evasive political activities, including ATP's lawsuit against state laws that require groups to disclose how they spend their campaigncontributions. Montana has a history of corruption in politics. The "Copper Kings" were the copper mining industry special interests that exercised undue influence in the state's electoral politics in the late 1890s and early 1900s. In response, the state passed the Montana Corrupt Practices Act of 1912 to limit corporate power. Montana is one of 24 states in the country to have state laws regarding campaign finance limits. The state's ban does not exclude PACs from the election process, however, and corporations can still funnel influence into campaigns through this route. A spokesman for the Montana Supreme Court said that the date the court would reach a decision was unclear at this time. The Montana Attorney General's office did not return calls for comment. "This case is just the tip of the iceberg," Wolken said. "There will be a lot of lawsuits filed against other states with such campaign finance laws." ____________________End forwarded material.______________________ -- Tian http://tian.greens.org This article is a fascinating look at the likely future of oil use: http://www.postcarbon.org/blog-post/508186-the-peak-oil-crisis-the-german The screw from mile 81 of Bike The Limits is now on a 1998 quarter. The only strict requirement is that you be a registered Green in California. We prefer those who have served in some capacity at the stateand/or county party level and will ask for a referral from a state or county representative, if we're not familiar with your Green Party activity. We strongly encourage those who self-identify as a minority, whether by region, gender, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, or disability. We are able to have as many as Alternate seats...though 15-20 is more realistic./// / There will be elections by the General Assembly at the GPCA Plenary in December 3-4 currently planned for about six of those delegate seats, by IRV, with about twice as many alternate seats open. //We expect that//some of the three delegates and four alternates whose terms are up will reapply. //According to our by-laws, we need your bios/applications two months //before the plenary so please send it as soon as possible or by October 3. / / / /Please mail your candidate statement to //applications at cagreens.org/ / Your statement should include biographical information about positions, experience, skills, and/or service that you have had (both within and outside of the Green Party), along with your vision or commitment for the position. (Please see statements submitted by previous candidates for examples, here: //http://cagreens.org/delegates/election///. / /NEW APPLICATIONS FOR DELEGATE WILL BE POSTED WITH A LINK FROM THAT PAGE AS WELL. On that page you will also find links to an editable application - application for delegate position Please indicate whether you are applying to be a delegate or an alternate. It is helpful if you are familiar with the delegate and alternate duties, guidelines, and expectations, which are listed on our state party website at://http://www.cagreens.org/delegates/delegate_guidelines.shtml// Of course, please be sure to forward this message to all relevant local and county listserves and e-mail lists! For this event one or more of us could prepare a speech - one which need not be limited to one minute - on one of the proposed topics: END THE WARS, TAX THE RICH, CARE FOR THE PEOPLE and PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT. From the later notification: There will be speakers on each of these four topics and an open mic for people to speak up. This event is being put on by the newly forming 99% Coalition. It would be great to have some Greens involved. We are seeking speakers. Oct. 6 2011, 3 to 6 pm at 7th and Mission St in San Francisco. It featured a nice stop at the Backestro Park chalk festival, which was heart warming and a good fundraiser for local arts education. That was followed by the San Jose Peace Center's "NO WAR! I didn't take my camera because my front page is so dominated by bike rides I couldn't face adding another one. Now I'm looking for something else to take pictures of. Every Sunday, as church let out and my parents lined up to shake hands with the minister, I would grab my Dad's car keys and race to the car to turn on the radio and get my education in the folk music of the world. This was in the very early 1950's. Studs introduced me to the Weavers, Woodie Guthrie, Jean Redpath, John Jacob Niles, Leadbelly, Mehalia Jackson and many more. The Santa Clara County Library has 2 copies of an HBO Documentary, Studs Terkel: Listening to America. (41 min) I just finished watching it and highly recommend it to all. He was unique, a one of a kind journalist and historian and the documentary captures for all. The copies are available in Morgan Hill and Milpitas but can be gotten at any branch just by requesting. His was a standard of truth seeking curiosity that, for all the programs with have today, we just don't see / hear. I recently passed on my copies of Hard Times and Division Street because other should have the opportunity to find what he discovered about us as Americans. In addition to calling Obama and elected reps - the party can show concrete support for and publicize this important report tht was just released. Cornell University Global Labor Institute has just come out with a damaging report against Keystone. Here is the link.http://www.ilr.cornell.edu/globallaborinstitute/research/upload/GLI_KeystoneXL_Reportpdf.pdf This is important because it is coming from a labor connected and labor movement source. It has been long in the making and Sean Sweeney and the team at GLI have been able to get a few unions, Amalgamated Transit Union & Transit Workers Union in addition to Bill McKibbon and Naomi Klein among others, to sign on to an accompanying letter to ask other labor leaders to sign on in opposition. The report, circulated today in the press, is already causing controversy. Previous to its release, several powerful unions who are under the wrong impression that there will be many union jobs, are coming out publicly against the brave transport unions that have spoken against the pipeline. The industry is on the attack. Reporters are calling to ask for a response to all of cornell faculty being called liars. It would be important for the National Green Party to issue a statement supporting both cornell and the unions that are smart enough to see the disaster of Keystone and the false claims of being good for jobs. Not sure how this works but obviously it needs to be done in a short time to be part of the initial controversy and then perhaps something more comprehensive can be put together. Any suggestions or guidance on how GP can get show support and promote the party's position on this important environmental issue? thanks, Gloria Mattera NYS -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I've added a plot showing the increase in income inequality in the US since 1970. I'm a little concerned that the print may be too small. I can read it, and my wife seemed to think it's OK, but I'd be pleased to have some feedback -- including any suggested revisions in the verbiage. (The accompanying narrative notes that improvements in productivity in the US were broadly shared from 1947 to 1970. However, average annual income in the US has doubled since 1970, and most of these increases have gone to the wealthy. In part, this is a product of the very successful propaganda campaign that branded the media as liberal. I note that honestly liberal media have lost advertising and have either become marginalized, gone bankrupt, or gotten taken over by right wingers.) We are planning to leaflet some banks in the not too distant future, and if there are any typos or other errors or obscure phraseology, now is the time to fix those things. There was the Tar Sands Action, http://www.tarsandsaction.org/ where over 1200 people were arrested in front of the White House over a 2 week period, from late August to early September. Occupy Wall Street began on Sept. 17th about one block from Wall Street. At first there was little attention, from mainstream and alternate media, then alternate media started paying some attention, then the police got a little violent, then the mainstream media gave it some attention. Some unions are talking about joining the Occupy Wall Street action soon. Don't know if they will be joining just for the marches, or for the camping out as well. The Occupy xxx has expanded to at least Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco, and according to occupytogether.org, there may be dozens of efforts elsewhere. According to http://www.occupytogether.org/events/west/occupy-san-jose/ there will be an action in San Jose, Oct. 2, this Sunday, 2 days from now. And then October2011.org begins Oct. 6, with an occupation of Freedom Plaza in DC, and some simultaneous actions elsewhere. Should be interesting. Tar Sands Action is planning on returning Nov. 6th.
