Date: Sun, 01 Jul 2012 21:58:35 +0000 From: Jill Stein for President To: Gerald Grass Jill-Stein-email-blast-masthead.jpg REPORT: Double Your Green campaign succeeds! We are very proud to announce that Jill Stein is the first ever Green Party presidential candidate, and as of July 1st, the only 2012 progressive presidential candidate, to secure the necessary public support to qualify for federal matching funds! The Stein campaign has released a semi-final report of donations raised in its Double Your Green campaign, as follows below . Tomorrow, July 2nd, Dr. Stein will issue a statement regarding the importance of this victory. Matching funds map *The first $250 donated by any adult citizen or legal resident is counted* by the Federal Election Commission as a qualifying donation, and *will be doubled* once the Stein campaign's application for matching funds has been approved. To gain approval, the campaign must demonstrate that it has raised at least $5000 in qualifying donations in each of at least 20 states. *Donations in states that have already qualified are still welcome,* not only for their own sake, but more importantly because they provide a margin of safety to ensure that the Stein campaign is approved for matching funds. Additionally, once we have been approved, every dollar donated up to $250 per donor will be matched, regarding of the state of residency of that donor (if you live in Wyoming, your donation will be matched). *The following table (below ) shows cumulative qualifying donations ($250 or less) per state. *As of July 1st, 2012, 22 states had passed the threshold. These states are Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, DC, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. Dr. Stein is a very credible and viable candidate who well represents the party. (I'll probably never forgive Ms. McKinney for throwing away her credibility just before the 2008 election by claiming on the flimsiest of evidence that thousands of people had been executed after Katrina.) Dr. Stein's writeup is still very confusing. http://www.jillstein.org/funding If I'm oversensitive to this it's because I get a hell of a lot of fundraising requests just on account of my zipcode, and because I have worked many years with a cash-strapped organization, AE911Truth, that is accused by its lying detractors of being a money-raising scam. With Dr. Stein's campaign, any vagueness and confusion connected to fundraising matters is going to be discomfortable for experienced folks. > Date: Sun, 1 Jul 2012 16:17:25 -0700 > From: gerrygras at earthlink.net > To: sosfbay-discuss at cagreens.org > Subject: [GPSCC-chat] Jill Stein gets matching funds! > > > http://www.jillstein.org/funding > > Gerry > _______________________________________________ > sosfbay-discuss mailing list > sosfbay-discuss at cagreens.org > http://lists.cagreens.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/sosfbay-discuss -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Without US troops in Saudi Arabia, the suicide mass murders of September 11, 2001 would not have occurred.^1 <#sdfootnote1sym> If the US had not given weapons of mass destruction to Saddam Hussein in the 1980s, he could not plausibly have had them in 2002.^2 <#sdfootnote2sym> US actions against democracy in countries around the world convinced generations of third world politicians that the US would not allow them put the interests of their people above the concerns of US multinational businesses.^3 <#sdfootnote3sym> I know of no major enemy the US has other than ones we have earned by opposing liberty and justice for all. I pledge allegiance to liberty and justice for all. Spencer Graves copyright 2011-2012 under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license. 1 <#sdfootnote1anc>Thousands of articles and hundreds of books have been written on the suicide mass murders of Sept. 11, 2001. The overwhelming majority rearrange popular nostrums without any substantive empirical grounding. Two summarize serious, relevant research: Robert A. Pape (2005) /Dying to Win /(Random House) created a database of 315 incidents of suicide terrorism 1980 - 2003. All but 14 were classified as part of one of 18 different campaigns by 10 different organization, which shared two features: Opposition to a foreign occupation by a democracy. All but one (the Kurds in Turkey) had a different religion from the occupiers. The suicide mass murders of Sept. 11 contain all 3 of these elements. (Wikipedia, "Dying to Win", accessed 2012.07.02.) 2 <#sdfootnote2anc>Wikipedia, "The Riegle Report", accessed 2012.07.02. 3 <#sdfootnote3anc>This claim is so different from the dominant narrative disseminated by the mainstream commercial media in the US that it requires the introduction of substantial evidence. This footnote briefly discusses one example, Cuba, then cites sources that provide overviews of many other cases. Regarding Cuba, the US had 60 years from the end of the Spanish-American War, 1898, to the Cuban Revolution of 1959 to instill a culture of freedom and democracy there. Instead, through the 1930s, each Cuban government that displayed more concern about the well-being of their own citizens than US business interests was overthrown by a US troops (Wikipedia, "Cuba--United States relations", accessed 2012.07.04). In the 1930s, the US began supporting a Cuban military leader, Fulgencio Batista, who responded appropriately to US dictates. Batista decided to hold an election in 1952. When polls indicated he would lose, he canceled the elections -- and was immediately recognized as the head of state by Harry Truman's administration. Fidel Castro was a candidate for congress in those elections. (Wikipedia, "Fidel Castro", accessed 2012.07.03) Meanwhile, Che Guevara was involved in the democratically elected Arbenz regime in Guatemala, which was overthrown by a CIA-assisted coup in 1954 (Wikipedia, "Che Guevara"). A similar coup destroyed democracy in Iran in 1953 (Wikipedia, "1953 Iranian coup d'?tat"). And elections scheduled for 1956 in Vietnam were canceled when US President Eisenhower concluded that the Communist Ho Chi Minh would get 80 percent of the vote (Dwight David Eisenhower, 1963, /The White House Years: Mandate for Change/, Doubleday, ch. XIV. Chaos in Indochina). From these events, it understandable that someone like Castro might conclude that the US would not permit democracy to exist in Cuba. This evaluation of US foreign policy since the founding of the republic is bolstered by numerous other works based on declassified US government documents, reports of congressional committees, and articles written by public officials and government employees, many after they had left government and other seemingly reputable and authoritative sources. One is Noam Chomsky (2006) /Failed States /(Metropolitan), which discusses "Thomas Carothers, who identifies his stand as neo-Reaganite. ... Carothers found a 'strong line of continuity' running through all administrations in the post-Cold War era ... .: 'Where democracy appears to fit in well with US security and economic interests, the United States promotes democracy. Where democracy clashes with other significant interests, it is downplayed or even ignored.'" (pp. 149-150) Carothers is troubled by this "inconsistent" support for democracy, missing the obvious /consistency/in support for "security and economic" interests, i.e., US international business interests. (Carothers, 2004, /Critical Mission/, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, pp. 7, 42) See also William R. Polk (2007) /Violent Politics: A History of Insurgency, Terrorism, & Guerilla War, from the American Revolution ti Iraq /(Harper) and William Blum (2004) /Killing Hope: US Military and CIA Interventions since World War II /(Common Courage Press). This tradition extends earlier traditions in Britain and elsewhere of governments supporting a local aristocracy at the expense of everyone else (David Graeber, 2011, /Debt: The First 5,000 Years/, MelvilleHouse). It includes, for example, the decision by President Washington to send US tax money to plantation owners in Haiti (then called St. Domingue) to help them suppress a slave rebellion during the French Revolution (Wikipedia, "George Washington and slavery"). This history is understandable from Tip O'Neill's comment that "All politics is local" (Wikipedia, "All politics is local") with the understanding that the primary constituency for foreign policy is people with substantive business interests outside the country, because foreign policy is "local" for them. The general public hears very little that is contrary to the short term perceived interests of major advertisers, because the media companies would likely lose advertising revenue if they exposed too much information that displeased those who controlled adverting budgets. It's a bad habit we should try to break, a habit that lets nonsense sneak into the things people believe. I've been seeing it a lot in the comments on global warming stories. "Without US troops in Saudi Arabia, the suicide mass murders of September 11, 2001 would not have occurred." "If I were king, the moon would be made of cheese" is the common example. The sentence is true but it has no meaning, because I'm not king. Nothing that follows from a false assumption truly follows. It's one of the non sequiturs ("it does not follow") the Greeks warned us about. "If Ralph Nader hadn't run in 2000, Gore would have won." We don't know that. Without Nader's pressure, Gore could have run further to the right and lost by a landslide. Here a way to make Spencer's point without the false assumption. "There's evidence that the presence of US troops in SA provoked Al Queda into attacking the WTC." It's a pet peeve. Thanks for your patience. -/Cameron in San Jos//?/ On 07/04/2012 09:59 AM, Spencer Graves wrote: > A few of you may remember the polemic below from a year ago -- updated > with footnotes. Enjoy. Like you, Cameron, I usually avoid such absolute statements. In this case, I provided a footnote citing the most important evidence that I know supporting this claim, and I felt that the evidence cited there supported the stronger statement. (I just polished that footnote in the copy of this note on the web at "http://occupy.pbworks.com/w/page/55119685/Liberty%20and%20Justice%20for%20All".) I read somewhere that the Bush administration effectively acknowledged this by removing all US troops from Saudi Arabia not too long after Sept. 11, 2001. Checking just now, I found a Wikipedia article claiming that the US withdrew most troops in 2003, but a few remain, allegedly at Erskin Village, 20 km southeast of Riyadh. 2. I believe the available evidence makes my claim different from your two examples. 3. This was intended to be short -- and I admit it's polemical. It seems to me that it would lose its punch and brevity if it were reworded as you suggest. I tried to compensate by including footnotes. This is powerful and important work. the Presbyterian church has supported Single Payer for a long time. ? News Release?? 7-6-12 Johanna W.H.van Wijk-Bos ? Today the Presbyterian Church (USA) took a step toward divestment from for-profit health insurance companies in the US by instructing the appropriate committee of the General Assembly to begin a process of information gathering.? The Mission Through Responsible Investing Committee (MRTI) is instructed by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) to request information and explanations of health insurance companies. This information will focus especially on the insurers? practices in regard to state and federal lobbying expenditures and political campaign contributions, government subsidies and profit margins, denials of claims, and top executives? compensation packages. Other directives include a conversation with the Board of Pensions, the overseeing body that works with the health care provider, to ensure that the church?s health plan submits to the same standards that it asks of other insurers. Based on its analysis MRTI will evaluate the variance between church principles of universal access and affordability on the one hand and corporate objectives on the other. It will also assess the likelihood of significant change in corporate behavior. ? In addition, the committee is to recommend measures to the appropriate Council of the church, including possible divestment from the health insurance companies, measures that will strengthen the integrity of the church?s practice. The relevant committees and councils are requested to report on their action to the General Assemblies of 2014 and 2016, with an eye to guiding individual Presbyterians, congregations and mid-councils, in relation to their own investment holdings in this major part of the economy. ? Finally, all official bodies are encouraged to continue to support cost-effective health coverage for all through the single payer (or expanded Medicare) model common elsewhere in the developed world, and to support making health care affordable and transparent. The overture for this step originated with the Mid-Kentucky Presbytery, was joined by the Presbyteries of Albany, New York City, Long Island and West Jersey, and was approved overwhelmingly by the Committee on Health Issues of the General Assembly on July 3, 2012. The MRTI Committee is instructed to request information and explanations of health insurance company policy and practice on: state and federal lobbying expenditures and political/campaign contributions, government subsidies and profit margins related to provisions of the healthcare ?reform? legislation, aggregate data on increases in premiums and deductibles over the past ten years, categories and percentages of claims denied, and percentages of profits used in compensating top executives in comparison with return to shareholders. ?2.? The MRTI Committee is instructed to be in conversation with the PC(USA) Board of Pensions to ensure the PC(USA) health plan submits to the same standards that PC(USA), through MRTI, asks of other insurers. ?3.? Based on this corporate engagement and analysis, a summary of which shall be posted, MRTI is asked to evaluate the variance between church principles of universal access and affordability and corporate objectives, to assess the likelihood of significant change in corporate behavior, and to recommend to the GAMC and General Assembly measures, including possible divestment, that would strengthen the integrity of the church?s practice. ?4.? The GAMC, the Presbyterian Foundation, and the Board of Pensions, in turn, are requested to report on their actions (or request guidance) to the 221st and 222nd General Assembly (2014) and (2016), with an eye to guiding individual Presbyterians, congregations, and mid councils in relation to their own investment holdings in this major part of the economy. ?5.? FINAL EDITION ?9/11: Explosive Evidence ? Experts Speak Out? If you thought that the fires at the World Trade Center twin towers, set off by the horrific jetliner impacts of September 11, 2001, were the cause of the destruction of those iconic skyscrapers, you may be mistaken. Experts now cite evidence showing that high-temperature incendiaries and explosives were planted throughout the twin towers and the lesser-known 47-story Building 7, also destroyed later the same day. So says a group of architects and engineers nearly 1700 strong, represented by Richard Gage, AIA, founder of Architects & Engineers For 9/11 Truth (AE911Truth) and the director/producer of a new documentary. Two years in the making, the documentary ?9/11: Explosive Evidence ? Experts Speak Out ? FINAL EDITION ? officially debuted May 22 in Beverly Hills with a red carpet treatment and press conference. Famed actor Ed Asner, host and narrator of AE911Truth's micro-documentary "Architects & Engineers ? Solving the Mystery of WTC 7," joined Gage at the Beverly Hills kickoff and introduced the film. Also lending some star power to the Beverly Hills opening night were veteran Hollywood actors John Heard and Judd Nelson. High-rise architect Robert McCoy, one of the respected building professionals featured in Experts Speak Out, also attended the opening. A variety of special guests will appear with Gage at other premiere locations across the country, including experts featured in the film, family members of 9/11 victims, and prominent public figures who support 9/11 Truth. Mechanical engineer Tony Szamboti and 9/11 family member Bob McIlvaine, who made headlines with their explosive 9/11 interview by Geraldo on Fox News in 2010, will attend the premiere screening in Philadelphia on June 25. The film features 43 experts in building engineering, physics, chemistry, and other technical fields, plus a half-dozen psychologists who discussed the denial of the evidence that the AE911Truth engineers have been seeking to get attention to since the founding of the nonprofit organization in 2007. The group's petition, signed by 14,000 concerned citizens in addition to the architectural and engineering experts, calls upon the U.S. Congress to initiate a new independent investigation. ?The official story about the attacks of September 11 falls apart when you look squarely at the facts and apply basic scientific principles to interpret them," says Gage. "After more than ten years, a high-level investigation of the evidence is long overdue. Too much is at stake here to sweep the concerns under the rug. Family members of 9/11 victims speak to the viewers of this film. They explain why they are still not happy with the answers they've been given by our government. And they are asking you to join them in looking at what our experts have to say." Several of the film's experts bear PhD's, including renowned biologist Lynn Margulis, now deceased. Margulis was a National Medal of Science winner who, along with the other experts in this film, describes unscientific aspects of the US government's studies of the engineering failures at the World Trade Center. The complete, symmetrical failure of WTC 7 was especially baffling to engineers at the time. According to experts interviewed in the film, the official reports by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and later by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) assume their own conclusions, exclude relevant evidence, and failed to draw reasonable conclusions from the evidence that was examined. Dr. Margulis for instance discusses how the scientific method should have been applied to the evidence of high-temperature incendiaries found in the WTC dust by an international group of scientists. The documentary is filled with testimony from experts such as Les Young, one of several high-rise architects interviewed in the film, who remarks, ?I would not have expected the whole building to just give in at once. And I thought it rather odd that they fell almost perfectly ? in very similar ways. It seemed odd that lightning would strike twice.? The documentary presents interviews with several psychologists who share their ideas about why the evidence discussed by the technical experts in the film has been difficult for many to face, and how to make it easier. Regarding WTC Building 7, materials engineer Kathy McGrade says in the film, "The symmetry is the smoking gun." Structural engineer Ron Brookman notes: "The destruction of evidence was a criminal act in itself.... It was already being carted away and destroyed when the FEMA investigators got there about a month after September 11." According to retired physics teacher David Chandler: "In order for [WTC 7] to be falling down with zero resistance, it means that the resistance had to have been removed by something else.... You can?t have free fall when there?s support.... If I were a scientist at NIST, I?d be embarrassed to try to put forward something like [what they said in their report]. It was clearly a fraudulent argument." The NIST report on the twin Towers blames their destruction on office fires ignited by the jetliner impacts, combined with the removal of fireproofing insulation, knocked off the steel by those impacts. The NIST report on WTC 7, which was not hit by a jetliner, blames fires alone. The World Premiere of this milestone film kicks off a 30-city cross-country tour of the United States, wrapping up in San Francisco in July. This screening concludes a 30-city cross-country tour of the United States. Please forward to anyone you know who lives in Milpitas. Thanks. -- On June 25, five Supreme Court justices told us to stop complaining about money corrupting politics. They decided without looking at any evidence, listening to any arguments, or issuing any legal opinion. (For a 3-minute description of what happened, watch this video from the heads of Montana state government: http://snipurl.com/244f2az or ElectionsAreForUs.org .) Repealing the Citizens United doctrine of the Supreme Court will require a Constitutional amendment ? not an easy task. However, between now and August 7, we can do our part. The Milpitas City Council will then consider a resolution in support of a Constitutional amendment. The proposed draft resolution and the actual amendment wording essentially say that corporations are not people and money is not speech. The Frequently Asked Questions section includes a comparison of various proposed amendments, and why they don't cover all the bases like this MoveToAmend version does. Three more background documents: The Conservative Case for Overturning Citizens United http://www.citizen.org/documents/Conservative-Talking-Points.pdf A Call for a Constitutional Amendment http://www.citizen.org/documents/Fact-Sheet-Why-Pass-a-Constitutional-Amendment1.pdf How does Citizens United affect our city? http://www.citizen.org/documents/How-does-Citizens-United-affect-our-city517.pdf On that last subject, outside money has already affected our City by creating a fiefdom for Walmart and repealing the city's new campaign finance law (Milpitas Post, Feb 10, 2012). What you can do: - Speak out: write a letter to the Post (opinion at themilpitaspost.com), call the Council members (left column of http://www.ci.milpitas.ca.gov/government/council/city_council.asp), e-mail the Council members (http://www.ci.milpitas.ca.gov/government/council/speak.asp), alert your friends and neighbors, post a comment on a blog or http://milpitas.patch.com/, sign the petition (at http://movetoamend.org/ under GET INVOVLED) - Lobby the Council members. Join with one, two or three other supporters to discuss with each Council member why supporting a Constitutional amendment is important. - Attend the August 7 City Council meeting and urge them to join a growing number of cities calling for an amendment (http://movetoamend.org/resolutions-map). The meeting starts at 7:00 pm in Council Chambers (City Hall). If not moved to speak, you can sit and wear one of our ?name tags? that shows your support for a resolution. Your presence makes a big impact. Late last year, President Obama signed an annual military funding bill -- the National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA -- including controversial provisions that could authorize the US military to indefinitely detain anyone in the US without trial. The statute is so vague that anyone could be detained in military custody: mere suspicion of association with potential terrorists (or, for that matter, disfavored demographic or political groups) could suffice. The war on terror has long undermined our civil liberties and enabled ethnic profiling. The NDAA exacerbates that sad, outrageous, and continuing history. Two diverse panels will provide analysis, explore potential grassroots responses, and address questions from the audience. Are you available for getting together at 4:00 pm or so this Wednesday, July 18, somewhere in the vicinity of the SF Mime Troupe show that evening in Redwood City? The details of the show are below. I have set a goal to get to almost every SF Mime Troupe show this year, 30-45 minutes before the show in order to put a leaflet in the hands of audience members. The leaflet has my Open Letter to Governor Jerry Brown, about the budget, on one side, and on the other side "Occupying Government in Sacramento: Possibilities for a Boomerang on the 1%" focused on how the California Top Two Primary allows anybody to vote for anybody regardless of voter registration, so vote for candidates independent of corporate money, like the Greens! Since I'll be on the peninsula, it would be great to have a chance to be with a bunch of people and talk about changing California for the BETTER for a change! And changing the U.S. and the world. Let me know if it's possible for you. It would be fun to see and talk with you. Tian can be seen at 10:26, 29:30, 31:12, and 44:15 Green New Deal starts at 14:00: it will end climate change, obviate wars for oil, and end unemployment by creating ecologically, economically, and socially sustainable jobs in clean manufacture, local food production, public transport, clean renewable energy, health care, low cost housing, drug prevention-- ecologically sustainable jobs that serve our social needs. There will be a moratorium on foreclosures and evictions. Corporate backers of our legislature depend on high unemployment to keep wages down. Medicare for all. Tuition-free public education K-through college, an investment in the future. (The G.I. bill returned $7 for every dollar invested.) The economy and our democracy have been hijacked by the big banks and financiers. End bailouts and corporate giveaways, and break up the big banks. Restore Glass-Steagall. Establish public control of the money supply and credit. 90% tax on bonuses for bailed-out bankers. Reforms are necessary to restore democracy. End Big Money's domination of elections. We need a constitutional amendment: corporations are not people and money is not speech. We'll guarantee paper ballots, create non-partisan election commissions, restore voting rights of 1.4 million ex-felons; and implement IRV, proportional representation, public finance, and equal access to the airwaves and the debates. (Occupy the Debates.) The Green New Deal will p us back from the brink--for our economy, our environment, and our democracy. Bring the troops and the war dollars home from illegal, immoral wars and from 1000 military bases in 140 countries where we don't need to be. Militarism will be replaced by foreign policy based on respect for international law and human rights. Repeal unAmerican provisions of the PATRIOT Act, and the NDAA, and the Anti-Trespass and Anti Terrorism Acts that criminalize protest. Prohibit DHS and FBI conspiring with local police to suppress freedom of speech. Legalize marijuana, end the war on immigrants. End the deportations! End so-called Free Trade agreements that generate economic refugees, and institute Fair Trade agreements. The Politics of Fear have brought us everything we were afraid of. It's time for the Politics of Courage. Let's turn the White House into a Green House. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=tNUthYt3WLk -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Few will read far enough to get to his important points: The ruling duopoly of D's and R's serves the 1%, the group FDR called "economic royalists". Obama's meteoric rise to power is best explained by the notion that he sold his soul to the 1%. He's a Wall Street flunky and enabler of corporate malfeasance, he's engineered extrajudicial assassinations and, as President Drone, wantonly violated international law. He's protected Bush era war criminals, undermined privacy rights, and continued each and every departure from the rule of law broached since 9/11. Spineless Democratic bipartisanship may be more damaging to the country than would reawakened Democratic obstruction to Republican rule. Far preferable to refusing to vote is voting for 3rd parties: it keeps them alive, future circumstances may improve their prospects, their campaigns improve the quality of political discourse and, in the 3/4 of the states that are red or blue enough, voting 3rd party does no harm in the presidential race because it will not change the outcome of the electoral college results. That's because the huge campaign budgets pay first for focus groups and surveys to determine what will most likely sell. Then when in office, those politicians must deliver a return to the campaign contributors, averaging roughly $10 for each $1 -- but often more like $1,000 for each $1. For example, Solyndra got half a billion dollars in load guarantees in return for half a million in campaign contributions to Obama for President in 2008. Three speakers (David Bacon, Fritz Conle, and Adriana Garc?a) described numerous cases to support the claim that "an attack on one is an attack on all". For example, the criminalization of work by people here without papers gives employers license to employ all manner of illegal tactics to prevent workers from obtaining proper enforcement of US law regarding workplace safety, etc. Fritz Conle described a woman whose application for disability compensation was denied, claiming she had already collected all that was due her. After checking, it was revealed that after California law was changed to allow people to apply for unemployment benefits via telephone or Internet, a post office box in Delano, CA, had been given as the address for several former employees of a certain firm, including Conle's client. This was almost certainly fraud, but Conle was unaware of any pressure to investigate and prosecute this case, though he was able eventually to get unemployment for his client. For me, one of the most memorable parts of the session was the comments by Jim Beall, currently representing California Assembly district 24 (http://asmdc.org/members/a24 ) and running for California State Senate in district 15 (www.jimbeall.com ). He said that beginning at age 15, he had worked for several years doing stoop labor in California's agriculture industry. While picking tomatoes, he noticed another group also picking tomatoes but at roughly double the rate. He later learned that they were Braceros (Wikipedia, "Bracero Program"), being paid half the rate per tomato, so at the end of the day, the Braceros took home roughly the same amount of money he did for half the production. Some years later, he was working towards the south end of the Central Valley, when he noticed several law enforcement vehicles appear with their red lights flashing. Many of his co-workers disappeared at that moment, ran from the field, got in their cars, and left. That happened to be Friday, when everyone got paid -- except for the undocumented, who had fled for fear of arrest. This one also paints a bleak picture. But unlike the others, this one was not depressing. I think it provides a glimmer of understanding that might end up being helpful. I say that in part due to my emotional response and to some of the comments. I suspect that the subject is not new to most, but I think that there still will be something new to many. For those who have seen "Thank You for Smoking": http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0427944/ when asked why he did what he did, Nick Naylor said "to pay the mortgage". There's a reference to climate change in paragraph 7. A personal story: Without going into details I once was a manager, I was required to perform an unpleasant and I believe unethical task, I later decided to never be a manager again, and I now wish I had resigned as manager instead of doing what was requested. I think this helps me relate to this article. Please help them through this difficult time by making an urgently-needed donation. ANSWER Los Angeles office ransacked & robbed Attack comes hours office deluged with racist hate calls over Anaheim police protests Your help needed! Door to ANSWER LA office. ANSWER file cabinets searched. Attackers trashed storage room looking for all sound equipment and bullhorns. Dear John, On Monday, the ANSWER Coalition was highlighted in the mass media for our role supporting the protests in response to the outrageous police attack in Anaheim. ANSWER placards and signs were highly visible in media photos and video. ANSWER volunteers were interviewed by mainstream media outlets. That night, the ANSWER office in Los Angeles was broken into, ransacked and robbed. All of our computers, ten total, were stolen, in addition to all of our sound equipment and our bullhorns ? the things essential to organizing and conducting protest actions. We had many other losses too and our files were ransacked. Please click here to make an urgently needed donation to help us recover from this attack. At this point, we cannot say with certainty the nature of this attack?but we believe the events leading up to it are noteworthy. After being in the national spotlight the ANSWER Coalition office was deluged with racist hate calls supporting the Anaheim police, who killed two unarmed men in 24 hours and inflicted so much brutality against the community. At the same time, right-wing websites began an internet-based attack campaign against the ANSWER Coalition labeling us ?outside agitators.? Hours later the office was broken into and ransacked. And we know that the United States?and southern California in particular?has a long history of police attacks on the offices progressive organizations, with the intent of disrupting or sabotaging their organizing efforts during key political crises. Despite this attack, we are not deterred. We still managed to mobilize for the mass action at the Anaheim City Council meeting, and will be marching in Downey this Saturday against the police murder of Mike Nida. However, our work has been severely disrupted. We are asking for your help to so that we can replace our equipment and rebuild our office. Please help us so that we can continue mobilizing actions against police brutality, the war in Afghanistan, budget cuts, and as we work to build a movement for justice and equality. Please click here to make an urgently needed donation. Your solidarity and support through this attack is critical to continuing our work, and is very much appreciated. Please make as generous a donation as you can. Standing together we can make a difference. In struggle, Peta Lindsay Mike Prysner Coordinators, ANSWER Los Angeles A.N.S.W.E.R. Visibly irritated, Mayor Tait temporarily recessed the meeting and Anaheim Police officers equipped with riot gear started to enter the room. It was incredibly surreal to watch police officers equipped with helmets, batons, and pellet guns parade back and forth inside Council Chambers. They would march in from a rear exit leading into Council Chambers and then go directly into the lobby, where they were trying to push anti-police brutality protesters back outside who were loudly demanding to get in. They sometimes would go back out the rear exit, then return again. > >(Although I'm not defending the city's actions in keeping people out, because every seat in Council Chambers had already been taken and many people were standing against the wall, the fire marshals refused to let any additional people in, citing risk of fire and other hazards. This has occurred before at many previous meetings of that body when the room was packed.) > >After the lobby was cleared of chanting protesters by riot police, Mayor Tait then resumed the meeting. Although the meeting at first strictly followed the agenda, it stayed on public comments for the rest of the evening. Aside from myself, there were quite a few people during public comments who spoke critically about the Anaheim Police Department and the recent shootings. > >Several times during the meeting, Mayor Tait held five minute recesses, I assume to keep abreast on events that were occurring on the streets outside Anaheim City Hall. He and other members of the council appeared to be shaken by what was going on. Some of them looked like they were in daze. > >Although there were many items on the Council Agenda, Mayor Tait decided to cut the meeting short and continue them to a future date. > >When I exited Anaheim City Hall, there were dozens of riot police surrounding the building and the adjacent parking structure. There were police cars with flashing lights everywhere. > >It was a truly bizarre experience. > >[UPDATE: When I wrote this brief report 9 hours ago, I forgot to mention that Mayor Tom Tait did deviate from the Council Agenda slightly by making comments about the shooting and the "civil unrest" that was occurring.
