[GPSCC-chat] Fwd: Time is running out--XL Pipeline.

Darryl Hannah spoke briefly at the Aquarius Theater 2 weeks ago about the XL at the
screening of "Greedy Lying Bastards". She raised some points I didn't know:

1) In 12 months the pipeline has already had 12 spills. The pipeline passes over two
natural water reservoirs--one in the north and one in Texas--that would be very
vulnerable to contamination in case of a spill. I believe she said these reservoirs were
fossil water so that if they were contaminated it would be forever. There is no natural
regeneration process of natural cleansing in these reservoirs.

2) The transmission mechanism is very inefficient. The oil must be heated and kept
hot (150 F I believe) to permit pumping.

3) The pipeline is not about delivering the oil to the USA. It goes all the way to the
Gulf of Mexico, and it's about delivering the oil to the global market at the global price.

I first learned of the Canadian tar sands in 2005 when Michael Ruppert spoke in Eugene,
OR. (Had I taken his advice to buy gold at 450--it's now at 1700--my financial status
would have been much improved.) Ruppert said that the Chinese were then investing
billions in a pipeline to bring the tar oil to market. I would assume this pipeline was routed
to a Pacific terminal rather than a Gulf terminal, and so I wonder what happened to the
Chinese pipeline and if the whole XL project was as much about denying tar oil access
to the Chinese as anything else.

Dear Friend,

After two days of travel, I’ve finally joined the Tar
Sands Blockade in Texas fighting the Keystone XL. This
pipeline joins Hurricane Sandy as another tragic example of the
establishment’s refusal to address climate change. With only 5
days until the election, we need all hands on deck to stand up for
ourselves and our environment.

Time
is running out -- can you pitch in today?

NASA’s leading climate scientist, Dr. James Hansen
has called Keystone XL “a fuse to the largest carbon bomb on the
planet.” Hansen has said that if all the carbon stored in the Canadian
tar sands is released into the atmosphere it would mean “game over”
for the planet.

Anything
you can give makes a difference. Together we win real democracy and
save our planet.

Activists are on the ground
across the country organizing in local communities and building the
demand for the Green New Deal. But we must have the resources
to keep up.

Please
dig deep. Every dollar will increase our impact.

I’m inspired by the support we’ve received from around the world --
thank you. Join me to keep building the momentum for a living
democracy.
