[GPSCC-chat] Sally Lieber

I have been curious about something: When I ran for County Council, there were 8 or 9 candidates on the ballot. How does Prop. 14 affect that?

I believe there is a middle ground, which we should strive to reach:

            1.  Especially with the Top Two system, I think we should start to rank all the candidates (and propositions) in any race, and make public recommendations.  If we have two Green candidates running for the same office, the Green Party should decide which to support, thereby increasing the chances that that person would come in at least second in the primary and make it to the general election.  If no Green is on the ballot, we should rank the candidates (and propositions) in the race and not be shy about recruiting people to campaign for, e.g., Rob Means, a former Green running as a Democrat for the Mayor of Milpitas:  He asked for our endorsement and received it.

            2.  We should further reach out to the Peace & Freedom Party and try to work with them to produce a combined slate so any Green party candidate would never go head to head with a Peace & Freedom candidate.  If the two parties become big enough that they could compete and still have a decent chance of at least one making it to the general election, then we should suspend that collaboration.

If we do this, I think we can enhance the chances for both the Greens and the Peace & Freedom party.  I also think we should explicitly and vociferously embrace the Pirate party platform to the extent that it is consistent with Green values, because doing so will, I believe, attract many people concerned about freedom of the Internet, etc.
