Dear Friends and Supporters:

Nearly three years ago, on September 24, 2010, the FBI began a series of raids on the homes of antiwar and international solidarity activists in Minneapolis and Chicago, and on the office of the Minneapolis/Saint Paul Anti War Committee.  In all, a total of 23 people were subpoenaed to a Federal Grand Jury.  What bound these activists together is that they had helped to organize a large antiwar protest at the 2008 Republican National Convention in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

This political repression led to the formation of the national Committee to Stop FBI Repression (CSFR).  Here in the South Bay, a local activist, Masao Suzuki, was also visited by the FBI as part of the raids and subpoenas in the Midwest.  We formed the South Bay Committee Against Political Repression (SBCAPR) as part of the CSFR to oppose repression of antiwar and international solidarity activists.  We in the SBCAPR also fought to keep long-time Chicano community and antiwar activist Carlos Montes out of jail after his home was raided and he was arrested by LA sheriffs in May of 2011.

Last Sunday, August 25, the SBCAPR organized a program with Carlos Montes and also Charlie Trujillo, a local Vietnam War veteran and author of Soldados.  Both Montes and Trujillo stressed the need to oppose U.S. plans to launch a military strike on Syria, pointing out that the United States had a long history of making up reasons to start wars.

At our meeting tonight, Tuesday, August 27th, our committee had a lengthy discussion about the drumbeat in the media on the need to attack Syria, and decided that we would urge all of our friends and supporters to express their opposition to another U.S. war in the Middle East and stand up against a U.S. military strike on Syria.  We ask you to attend any or all the following antiwar events in San Jose in the next few days, and to bring signs and any friends:

Wednesday, August 28, 4 to 5 pm, Congressperson Zoe Lofgren’s office, 634 North 1st Street between George and Jackson.

Thursday, August 29, 4 to 5 pm, Congressperson Zoe Lofgren’s office, 634 North 1st Street between George and Jackson.

Friday, August 30, 5 to 6 pm, MLK, Jr. Library, corner of 4th and San Fernando.

Saturday, August 31, 11:30 am to 2 pm, corner of Stevens Creek and Winchester.

Sunday, September 1, 11:30 am to 2 pm, corner of Stevens Creek and Winchester.

Monday, September 2, 5-6 pm, Market and San Carlos.

As we remember the anniversary of the August 28, 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, let us not forget the message of Dr. King who opposed the U.S. war in Vietnam:

"We must most past indecision to action.  We must find new ways to speak for peace in Vietnam and justice throughtout the dveloping world - a world the borders on our doorrs.  If we do not act, we shall surely be dragged down the long, dark, and shameful corridors of time reserved for those who possess power without compassion, might without morality, and strength without sight." Martin Luther King, Jr., "A Time to Break Silence," April 4, 1967.

My apologies for any repeat emails.
