REPORTBACK – “DON’T BREAK OUR HEART – SAVE OUR HOMES!”

Valentine’s Day Speak Out Tells Congress to “Have a Heart, No MoreCuts, Save Our Homes”!

Fifty tenants, homeless people, seniors, people with disabilities, and families gathered at the Low-Income Self-HelpCenter on February 14 to protest further cuts to housing and other safety netprograms that they depend on to survive. It was part of a national mobilizationby the National Alliance of HUD Tenants (NAHT) all across the country.

In particular they spoke out against theso-called “sequestration” cuts of 5.1% to the HUD housing budget and othersafety net programs on March 1. They pointed out that these programs were basichuman rights that the government should be required to EXPAND, not reduce. Theyvowed to take action together against any agency or politician that tried carryout these cuts.
