Thanks, Joan!   I'll send this to our local SPHC coalition and some of the other Bay Area groups' folks.  Some of them will already know about it but I did not.

Wed. May 15:  National Call-In Day for HR 676, single payer health care

The All Unions Committee for Single Payer Health Care—HR 676 is pleased to
join with a number of progressive organizations and individuals to support
a nationwide call-in day on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, to increase awareness
and co-sponsors in Congress for HR 676.

The call-in day was initiated by Progressive Democrats of America (PDA).

Please take a moment on Wednesday, May 15th to make a call in support of
Rep. John Conyers' HR 676 "Expanded and Improved Medicare for All" bill
which currently has 42 co-sponsors.

Go here to call your Congressperson:

http://hq-salsa3.salsalabs.com/o/1987/p/dia/action/public/index.sjs?action_KEY=9658

More than 600 unions have endorsed HR 676.  When we take action together,
we can break down the corporate barriers that have prevented the
democratic will of the people from bringing health care to everyone.
Winning more cosponsors is a beginning.

For more information on Conyers' bill, including cosponsors and text, go here

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/113/hr676

We must challenge Congress and the nation to move forward to single-payer
health care, enhanced Medicare for All. That's why we're backing
Representative John Conyers bill H.R. 676, that would establish a
non-profit, universal, single-payer health care program, an improved
"Medicare for All" act.

Please use this link to call your Congressperson:

http://hq-salsa3.salsalabs.com/o/1987/p/dia/action/public/index.sjs?action_KEY=9658

PDA will also include HR 676 in its monthly letter-drop to Congress.
Details for the letter-drop are here:
http://www.pdacommunity.org/issues/educate-congress

Congressman John Conyers, Jr., is a member of the National Advisory Board
of Progressive Democrats of America, PDA, and speaks highly of PDA:

"As the second-longest-serving Democrat in the House of Representatives, I
know what I am talking about when I say that no one has worked harder on
the issues protecting Social Security, fighting for a full employment
economy and national health care both inside and outside the Democratic
Party, than PDA."

PDA and others are planning for more events in conjunction with the
upcoming date of July 30th, the 48th anniversary of the passage of
Medicare--our own publicly-financed, universal health care plan, which
lifted a generation of seniors out of poverty.

Please ask your congressperson to cosponsor HR 676 by using this link:

Make a call to Feinstein for immigration reform.

As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, your senator has particular influence on the bipartisan Senate proposal for immigration reform, S. 744. In a series of meetings over the next few weeks, the committee will vote on amendments that could shift this legislation significantly. And you can have a say about the amendments being considered.

Tomorrow, May 14, the committee will consider amendments on the sections of the bill related to visas for workers. Please take action on Tuesday, May 14. Call your senator's office and encourage support of amendments that would protect immigrant workers. Urge opposition to amendments that would hurt those workers. You can find the phone number of your senator's office below as well as a more detailed sample script you can use to make your call.

These calls are very important. We have heard from Senate staff that they track and report the calls they get from constituents for and against each amendment.

First, Find the Phone Number for Your Senator(s) on the Judiciary Committee

Alabama: Senator Sessions: (202) 224-4124
Arizona: Senator Flake: (202) 224-4521
California: Senator Feinstein: (202) 224-3841
Connecticut: Senator Blumenthal: (202) 224-2823
Delaware: Senator Coons: (202) 224-5042
Hawaii: Senator Hirono: (202) 224-6361
Illinois: Senator Durbin: (202) 224-2152
Iowa: Senator Grassley: (202) 224-3744
Minnesota: Senator Klobuchar: (202) 224-3244 and Senator Franken: (202) 224-5641
New York: Senator Schumer: (202) 224-6542
South Carolina: Senator Graham: (202) 224-5972
Texas: Senator Cornyn: (202) 224-2934 and Senator Cruz: (202) 224-5922
Utah: Senator Hatch: (202) 224-5251 and Senator Lee: (202) 224-5444
Vermont: Senator Leahy: (202) 224-4242

Then, Make Your CallBelow is a sample script for your call. The amendments are explained at the end of this email. We've listed each amendment with the sponsor's name and a number (for example Leahy #2). Please refer to the amendments in that way. If you get a voicemail box, please leave a message.

I live in CA, and I urge the senator to SUPPORT the amendment called "Schumer #5, and all of the amendments being offered by Senator Blumenthal, because these amendments would protect immigrant workers.

I also urge the senator to OPPOSE amendments that would hurt immigrant workers - which I understand to be Lee #19, Hatch #19 and #20, and Grassley #73 and #74.

We will let you know as more important amendments come up in these Judiciary Committee. You probably won't want to contact your senator every time, but we hope you will weigh in on provisions that matter most to you.

Do You Tweet?You can also contact your senator on Twitter. Use the hashtags #CIRmarkup or #SJC (Senate Judiciary Committee), when you send your message to your senator: @SenatorLeahy, @SenFeinstein, @ChuckSchumer, @SenatorDurbin, @SenWhitehouse, @amyklobuchar, @alfranken, @ChrisCoons, @SenBlumenthal, @maziehirono, @ChuckGrassley, @OrrinHatch, @SenatorSessions, @LindseyGrahamSC, @JohnCornyn, @SenMikeLee, @tedcruz, @JeffFlake

About the AmendmentsFCNL is working with our faith colleagues in Washington to support amendments that fix our broken immigration system and protect the rights of all workers and to oppose amendments that would make things worse. Find out more about our work on immigration.

Amendments to SupportSenator Blumenthal's Amendments #7, #13, #17, and #18

These amendments would ban hiring discrimination based on national origin or citizenship status, provide whistleblower protections for temporary workers, ensure workers have the right to a pay stub so that they can prove employment status for the pathway to citizenship, and codify current Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) policy restricting immigration enforcement actions where labor violations have been cited, so a threat of raids won't keep workers from reporting abuse.

Senator Schumer's Amendment #5

This amendment would help workers change employers without the risk of losing their visa, and would provide an electronic monitoring system for the program.

Amendments to OpposeSenator Lee's Amendment #19 and Senator Hatch's Amendments #19 and #20

These amendments would exempt employers of temporary workers from complying with labor and employment laws, thus allowing them to violate the rights of temporary workers; and would limit the ability of individuals and groups from submitting a complaint about worker's mistreatment on behalf of a mistreated temporary worker.

Senator Grassley's Amendments #73 & #74

These amendments would restrict temporary workers (new "W" visa recipients) from renewing their visas, and would require all temporary workers to provide proof that they can and are paying for their own health insurance, which could effectively prevent almost all temporary workers from entering the U.S.

Thank you for your advocacy.

Associate Executive Secretary for Legislative Program
