A native protest against a shale-gas project in New Brunswick has
exploded in violence, sending dozens of people to jail and reducing five
police cars to smouldering ruins.
The clash between the RCMP and
the Elsipogtog First Nation, north of Moncton, began early Thursday
morning when a large number of officers arrived at a compound where SWN
Resources Canada stores equipment. The police intended to enforce an
injunction against a native blockade that has prevented SWN, a natural
gas and oil exploration company, from conducting seismic testing.

It’s a growing grassroots response similar to that of the IdleNoMore
movement. Groups across the country are mobilizing Thursday after
violence broke out on the anti-fracking protest line in rural New
Brunswick.
First Nations people across the country are being asked to show their
support for Elsipogtog protesters fighting a protest injunction being
enforced by the RCMP.

The blockade is preventing [Texas-based South Western Energy] from operating thumper trucks, massive
vehicles that gather seismic data to determine the location of natural
gas. During my short stay here I’ve witnessed the co-operation between
natives and settlers, a partnership that has kept this blockade fully
stocked and operational. Food, wood, hot coffee, tents and other
supplies keep streaming all the while SWN berates the police in the
media for not arresting the protesters.

There are armed men, lying on their stomachs with rifles aimed at the tar sands/fracking protesters.
