With the coming of "top-two" primary elections in California, thanks to passage of Proposition 14 in 2010, the Green, Peace and Freedom, Libertarian, American Independent, and Americans Elect parties find themselves in danger of disappearing from the state ballot, joining the Prohibition, Socialist and Progressive parties in the mists of California's history. "We're getting wiped out by top two," said Michael Feinstein, spokesman for the Green Party. "It's wiping out political diversity and choice that voters now are not going to get." Once a political party qualifies to appear on the state primary ballot, California law sets out a couple of ways it can stay there. First, the party can have official registration equal to 1 percent of the votes cast in the most recent governor's election, which works out to 103,004 registered voters, based on the 2010 race. The second way allows them to have a much lower number of registered voters, currently 11,832, but only if one or more of the party's candidates can collect at least 2 percent of the vote in one statewide general election. But under the new election rules, which will be used for the first time in a governor's race this year, only the two candidates with the most votes advance to the Nov. 4 general election. With the Democrats and Republicans having a stranglehold on those top spots, there won't be any minor party candidates on the November ballot. That means it's registration numbers or nothing for the minor parties. It's doable That's not necessarily a problem. The conservative American Independent Party, which has been qualified for the California ballot since 1968, had 472,536 registered voters as of April - well above the needed total. The other minor parties, however, are rooting for a low-turnout election in November. In 2010, about 10.3 million Californians voted in the November election for governor, a nearly 60 percent turnout. Using that year's qualifying number of 103,004 registered voters, the Green Party, with a registration of 109,157, and the Libertarian Party(114,656), are just squeaking by, while the Peace and Freedom Party (77,594) and theAmericans Elect Party (3,604) face ballot extinction. "The top-two (primary) is making it difficult, but we're willing to rise up to the challenge," said Gale Morgan, Northern California vice chairman of the Libertarian Party. In the 2010 election, every minor party had at least one candidate who broke the 2 percent threshold in one or more statewide contest, keeping them alive through this year. While some of those minor party votes may have been protests against the Republicans and Democrats on the ballot, the candidates also received support from people who liked their stance on the issues, said Feinstein, a Green who is the former mayor of Santa Monica. "This disenfranchises everyone," he said of the top-two system. Falling off There's nothing unusual about parties falling off the California ballot. Since 1910, when the statewide party nomination process began, 12 parties have disappeared, most after only a few years on the ballot. The Communist Party, for example, was a recognized political party in the state from 1934 to 1944, while the Townsend Party was on the ballot from 1938 to 1942 and theIndependent Progressive Party from 1948 to 1954. More recently, the Natural Law Party lost its right to appear on California primary ballots in 2006, while the Reform Party disappeared in 2002. But the complaints from the state's smaller parties have had an effect. A bill making its way through the Legislature, AB2351 by Assemblyman Rich Gordon, D-Menlo Park, would ease the pressure on minor parties. Changes afoot The bill, which has the support of Secretary of State Debra Bowen, would move the 2 percent test for minor party candidates from the top-two general election to the wide-open primary contest. It would also allow parties to stay qualified for primary elections if their registration is more than one-third of 1 percent of the state's total registration. That would lower the threshold to about 59,000 registered voters. Gordon's bill is a start, said Feinstein. But it doesn't address other concerns of the smaller parties, he said, including higher filing fees, increased costs for printing ballot statements and a huge jump, from 150 to 10,000, in the number of signatures needed to get on the ballot without paying filing fees. "If you have voices on the ballot, issues get play," Feinstein said. Even if minor party candidates don't win, "I don't doubt they create debates we need to have." -------------- next part -------------- _______________________________________________ gpca-forum mailing list gpca-forum at cagreens.org http://lists.cagreens.org/mailman/listinfo/gpca-forum From gerrygras at earthlink.net Wed Jun 11 20:37:08 2014 From: gerrygras at earthlink.net (Gerry Gras) Date: Wed, 11 Jun 2014 20:37:08 -0700 Subject: [GPSCC-chat] John Nichols on the Eric Cantor loss In-Reply-To: <53991F0A.2080202@earthlink.net> References: <53991F0A.2080202@earthlink.net> Message-ID: <53992064.90100@earthlink.net> FYI, "Eric Cantor Loses to a Conservative Who Rips Crony Capitalism" http://www.commondreams.org/view/2014/06/11-3 http://www.thenation.com/blog/180189/eric-cantor-loses-conservative-who-rips-crony-capitalism ========== begin excerpt =============== If Brat does go to Congress as a conservative critic of big business, and of the GOP?s alliance with corporate interests, he could open up a lot of new debates within the party, and beyond its boundaries. There was also a smaller selection of "Don't Be Fuelish" bumper stickers. I was thinking that the first set of stickers was a bit out of date until just a day or so ago. However, as of today, June 12, 2014, Obama has thrown his support behind the installed puppet government of Iraq in their so far failing attempts to stem the advancing tide of the more-radical-than-Al-Queda insurgents that are attempting to take over all of Iraq. Note that the insurgents in Iraq are among the same group as the "rebels" attempting to overthrow Assad in Syria. So far, the speculation is that Obama may start drone bombing Iraq (since he has left "all options" on the table). So I guess my old bumper stickers are still timely, unfortunately. I have left my entire stack of stickers (plus the remaining "Don't Be Fuelish" stickers) inside the Peace Center at 48 s 7th street, San Jose, CA. I managed to give away a few of each sticker on the light rail trip downtown. The rail car was very crowded and someone just asked me if he could have a sticker. So I gave a few people one of each. For those of you who are into conspiracy theories, I have one just for this afternoon. I rarely if ever use my cell phone in a way that tips off the NSA as to where I am when I go out or where it is I am about to go. I usually leave my cell phone at home. Today was a rare exception to this rule. Before leaving my house to go to the Peace Center, I called the Peace Center to verify that they were in fact open with staff present as sometimes they are closed for the entire shift when they are supposed to be open. I mentioned that I would be bringing bumper stickers for them to give away that had the phrase "Don't Bomb Iraq Or Anyone Anymore". After I hung up, I still left my cell phone at home. Wouldn't you know it, when I got to the light rail station, I just missed the 4:45 train and thought "no problem, I'll just wait for the 5:00 train". At 5:15PM a train finally shows up, but it is only one car, not the two cars that normally run all day in both directions on weekdays. Supposition: there was some kind of disruption in service right at that exact moment that I left for the Peace Center that required splitting the Southbound trains into one car trains headed North and one car continuing to head South, past the next few stations that were near the Santa Teresa end of the line. I will watch the news tonight to see if there is a story about any service disruption. Not a big deal for me really. There were no delays on the return trip and the one Northbound train (with 2 cars) that passed us on the way South was running on time. On a lighter note, I introduced www.peacemovies.com to my new group of Facebook pals who live in Eugene and got 10 unique visitors to my homepage on Tuesday and 5 visitors on Wednesday when I normally get an average of 2 visitors per day. So I may decide to catch up with my 2014 movie reviews sometime around August 2014 and then continue to review DVD new releases. The other issues that I wanted to explore besides Peacemovies just aren't that pressing or time consuming at the moment. I have a plan to investigate the rather flaky claims made by PEN that there are nanoparticles of Titanium Dioxide in food such as Rice Dream rice drink. The PEN database that the claim is based on is "crowdsourced", so I consider their data as presented to be no more reliable than the unfootnoted prose of a Wikipedia article, which your high school English teacher would give you points off your grade for quoting without providing an original source. The makers of Rice Dream deny that they use nanotech or Titanium Dioxide, but I found a food testing lab that will test some samples for me for only $150 per sample. At some point I may seek crowdsource funding to pay for testing of up to 96 different food products currently in the PEN database. I was going to footnote the article that originally turned me onto the PEN database, but my computer can't access my bookmarks right now (too congested while listening to Revolution Radio at http://www.freedomslips.com/legacy.htm where people who also appeared on RT's Crosstalk program are talking about the latest disasters in Ukraine, Iraq and Syria) But I was able to Google for a new article which has a lot more credible sources, located here: http://www.dairyreporter.com/Manufacturers/Dannon-Daisy-LAG-deny-reported-titanium-dioxide-nanoparticle-use . Apparently, there is a university study that was the basis for a Friends of The Earth white paper on the subject. So I may not have to get my own testing done after all. I also have a plan to get around the possible discontinuation of the availability of the Peacemovies web site if Net Neutrality goes away. Regardless of what happens with Net Neutrality, I will put the 2011-2014 booklets on CD's and distribute them for free at first and then if I get a bunch of interest, start charging $5 for a CD that has all 4 booklets on it.The pdfs will also be available for download from the web site for free for as long as that lasts The pdfs of the booklets will be interactive, where the 3 minute previews of each movie that are available on youtube can be played by clicking on a link in the pdf. I may also update the web site so that html pages that duplicate the booklets layouts and features can be accessed with a cell phone without having to download a pdf file. In the remaining time that I have available (about 30 hours per month) I can start reviewing movies available from Netflix that are intended to be viewed by kids of ages 2-8 years old. There just aren't many movies available that are nonviolent that are suitable for kids under age 10, so I will just have to see what there is available on Netflix, probably from a selection of older titles. That is all for now. Sincerely, John Thielking -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Therefore, we have removed the products from the Weir study for the moment until we can develop a better explanation of what that study evaluated and what it means in terms of the amount of nano-scale titanium in each product. The study itself tested a food grade titanium that is typically used in the food industry. That food grade titanium was then analyzed for TIO2 and nano-scale TIO2. They then tested various food products for titanium and compared those results to the analyses of the food grade titanium. In essence they were making an assumption that if there is titanium in the food product, it would have some component that was TIO2 and some fraction would be at the nano-scale. You can read the entire study here: http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/es204168d?journalCode=esthag The details in these studies are extremely important and were ignored in both the FOE report and the subsequent news stories. (EFM) that took over BentonHarbor in 2011. EFMs are a threat to democracy everywhere, as proven when anEFM declared the bankruptcy of Detroit in 2013. A federal judge subsequentlyruled that its workers had no right to keep their pensions despite explicitprotection in the Michigan State Constitution, a decision that impacts the fateof workers as far away as California. Thespecific charges against Rev. Pinkney in the recall of Mayor Hightower are thathe altered some of the dates on the petitions. However, the evidence againsthim introduced at his preliminary hearing was flimsy and contradictory, as pointedout in a June 3 article in Voice ofDetroit: ? AnotherBenton Harbor resident turned in the recall petitions on January 8, not Rev.Pinkney. ? Rev.Pinkney was formally charged and a warrant issued for his arrest on that sameday, January 8, but the petitions were not turned over to the Michigan StatePolice Forensics Lab for examination until February 26. ? InMarch, Berrien County Sheriff Deputies conducted a massive campaign tointerrogate and intimidate petition signers throughout Benton Harbor. ? Sgt.James Goff, who examined the petitions, is not a certified Forensics DocumentExaminer. ? Sgt.Goff testified that, ?I can?t say who altered them or when.? ? Nooriginal petitions were admitted into evidence, only copies, and the BerrienCounty Sheriff?s Department, Elections Commission, and Michigan State Policedisagree on where the originals are located. ? Threewitnesses who had circulated petitions testified that they saw petition signersthemselves change the dates on their signatures due to errors, and onecirculator testified that she changed a date she herself entered due to anerror. ? CountySheriff Sgt. David Zizkovsky stated that he himself asked the Forensics Lab tochange five dates on the petitions. ? Therewas no confession, no certified handwriting expert testimony, no eye witnesses,no evidence that Rev. Pinkney had exclusive access to the petitions, and lotsof evidence that lots of other people had access to them. Thecharges against Rev. Pinkney are an attack on our right to petition for redressof grievances and our right to take political action independently of thecorporate agenda and the two-party system. The fight to defend Rev. Pinkney isthe fight for democracy and for the future of America. Publicizethis case. Write letters of support for Rev. Warner and Sandy told me they are not receiving email from sosfbay-discuss, and neither is Caroline. I've recently received email from Warner and Sandy. This says that they can send to sosfbay-discuss, which means that they are still on that list. Warner and Sandy have AOL. Caroline has att.net. My conjecture is that AOL and att.net have installed a new feature to reduce spam traffic, and that feature may be blocking sosfbay-discuss. See you this evening. Meeting: Warner > > > 7:55 Report on Single Payer Health Care work Sandy: two trends: 1. try to get a bill. 2. initiative on the ballot Two state-wide networks, which need to patch up their differences if they want to be effective. California Nurses' Association needs to be figure out how to work with others and vice versa. No major events as far as is known now. > 8:10Report on Climate Change work. Caroline: 2 climate change meetings this week. They are trying to get more groups in 350 Silicon Valley. One is Vietnamese and Filipinos. De Anza Filipino students have organized events around this. There will be a Climate Train to New York Sept. 15-18 (must sign up by July 11) to support a march Sept. 20-21. Global Climate Convergence Sept. 19-21 in NYC. A group has organized a presentation and is looking for venues. > 8:25 Report on De Anza work There is now a DeAnza Green Party with student officers. They've made their own banner. Cheri Honkala came in 2012. Laura Wells and Luis Rodriguez came this spring. Club advisors: Cynthia Kaufman(sp) organizes the Institute of Community and Civic Engagement at DeAnza. Drew would like to see more student empowerment, e.g., a representative on the Board of Trustees. A bank "Higher One" is pushed by DeAnza for the students. Approved by the Board of Trustees over the objections of a student representative on the Board. Try to organize a drive to expose the questionable marketing practices of Higher One. Problems with sexual predators / rape on campus. Working with other groups such as "Inclusability" (disability rights) plus minority groups. > 8:35 Request for a letter in support of Green Party Rev. Edward > Pinkney (see story > below) (Sandy) Sandy got info on this from "Voice of Detroit" (available on the web). Warner would prefer that we just affirm the proposal and give Sandy the authority to create a final version without the need for approval by the County Council. We have consensus on the proposal as revised. > > 8:45Report back from the State Plenary if anyone has any information. No one here went to Santa Barbara. Andrea talked with Sanda on the GPCA Media committee (email): Mike is putting together information. He's no longer on the Media / PR committee. "Mike is going to write a report." * Discussion about the status and future of email list and web site (15 minutes, max) Are local web page and email list have had operational problems from its connection with the statewide Green Party. This was a system created a decade ago by Cameron among others. Do we want to close down our email lists and web site and create something new? Warner spoke about this with Cameron roughly a month ago. riseup.net tries to minimize the intrusions of the surveillance state. We should have a list for the County Council to record their deliberation. There are two separate GPSCC web sites. They should be merged. Let's continue this discussion on the email list, and we will keep this on the agenda for next month's meeting. * Who will get the current list from the Registrar of Voters (10 minutes) Spencer will contact Jim Doyle to find out the rules and then try to get a free update of the list of registered voters. Sometime now and the end of August. We will have this on the agenda as a regular item at least until we get an updated list. * Strategy, e.g., How to revive this group (Drew, 15 minutes) Drew is concerned that our monthly meetings are boring. He likes the Move to Amend group with their committee submeetings then coming together are reporting to the group as a whole. Caroline: We used to do things, organize events. "Food for Thought" = pot luck with one or more speakers. Movie nights. Sandy and Drew has organized 2 or 3 events each month. Andrea: We need to fix the email list and web page. Sandy will make a list of what we've done recently. Warner can draft a short envisioning exercise for next month's meeting. * Cosmos watching at Caroline's (date yet open) * Treasurer's report: balance $1,158.29 as of earlier this week. > 8:55Adjourn > > > *Facing Twenty-Five Years in Prison for Circulating a Petition* > Green Party member and 2008 Congressional candidate Rev.
