Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend. My view on surveillance is summarized in the 1-minute video and blog on "Restrict secrecy more than data collection" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cV8mHfu3mDw; http://sanjosepeace.wordpress.com/2014/07/18/restrict-secrecy-more-than-data-collection). "Stingray phone trackers", owned by many police departments, can potentially identify by name and precise location of everyone in a peaceful assembly -- provided they have their cell phone on them and turned on (Wikipedia, "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stingray_phone_tracker"). Many intersections now have surveillance cameras that read license plates. Face recognition software will soon be able to put names to most of the faces in a crowd of thousands of people in the street from a photograph. Many government agencies will ignore any laws banning such data collection unless we have strong laws protecting journalists and whistleblowers. Unfortunately, most judges in the US today will not anyone accused of revealing state secrets to challenge the government's claim of secrecy. An extremely rare exception was a recent judicial ruling to allow public access to tapes from force feeding a Guantanamo detainee. The campus map http://www.foothill.edu/news/maps.php would be too large for our email list Hi, Jim Doyle I'm Chris in student government at Foothill College Our senate board discussed all the details for the "Political Awareness Day" event until yesterday and I'd love to give all information for your party. We will start the event from 12 to 1 in Oct 15th. [That is this comiing Wednesday.] We already reserved the Green Party table, and you can come to the booth at 11:30~40 At 12, so many students will visit the event(I estimate over 1,000), and we will make one big group(20~25 students) per ten minutes. Then, you can explain about your party (Definition, History, Purpose and etc) in booth. After your explanation, one volunteer student will ask one question to group students about your party. In addition, we would love if you become a quest speaker and promote your party during the event. About the location, please find the build 3500(library) in campus map, then you can see the library quad in front of this building. Unfortunately, I have a midterm until 12, so I provide the another senator's number to ask any questions about set up for that day. She will also guide you to the event booth. Cindy- 4086502566 Our college address is 12345 El Monte Rd, Los Altos Hills, CA 94022 I will ask to the school event director about the free parking ticket. I will send an email about this issue tomorrow afternoon If you have any questions about the event, please ask to me anytime ! Thank you for coming. Veterans for Peace Chapter 101 invites those with a personal or organizational commitment to peace to join us in the ringing of bells on the morning of November 11 to focus on the desire to end the horror of war rather than celebrate it. After the solemn gathering, the 11am bell-ringing and a minute of silence there will be an opportunity to address the gathering with personal reflections. The documents alsoreveal that Central Valley Water Board testing found high levels of arsenic, thallium and nitrates ?contaminants sometimes found in oil industry wastewater ? inwater-supply wells near these waste-disposal operations. ?Clean water is one ofCalifornia?s most crucial resources, and these documents make it clear thatstate regulators have utterly failed to protect our water from oil industrypollution,? said Hollin Kretzmann, a Center attorney. ?Much more testing is neededto gauge the full extent of water pollution and the threat to public health. But Governor Brown should move quickly to halt fracking to ward off a surge inoil industry wastewater that California simply isn?t prepared to dispose ofsafely.? The state?s Water Board confirmed beyond doubt that at least nine wastewater disposal wells havebeen injecting waste into aquifers that contain high-quality water that issupposed to be protected under federal and state law. Thallium is an extremelytoxic chemical commonly used in rat poison. Arsenic is a toxic chemical thatcan cause cancer. Some studies show that even low-level exposure to arsenic indrinking water can compromise the immune system?s ability to fight illness. ?Arsenic and thalliumare extremely dangerous chemicals,? said Timothy Krantz, a professor ofenvironmental studies at the University of Redlands. ?The fact that highconcentrations are showing up in multiple water wells close to wastewaterinjection sites raises major concerns about the health and safety of nearbyresidents.? The Center obtained aletter from the State Water Resources Control Board to the EnvironmentalProtection Agency. The letter says that the Central Valley Regional Water Boardhas confirmed that injection wells have been dumping oil industry waste intoaquifers that are legally protected under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act.The state Water Board also concedes that another 19 wells may also havecontaminated protected aquifers, and dozens more have been injecting waste intoaquifers of unknown quality. The Central Valley WaterBoard tested eight water-supply wells out of more than 100 in the vicinity ofthese injection wells. Arsenic, nitrate and thallium exceeded the maximumcontaminant level in half the water samples. While the current extentof contamination is cause for grave concern, the long-term threat posed by theunlawful wastewater disposal may be even more devastating. Benzene, toluene andother harmful chemicals used in fracking fluid are routinely found in flowbackwater coming out of oil wells in California, often at levels hundreds of timeshigher than what is considered safe, and this flowback fluid is sent towastewater disposal wells. Underground migration of chemicals like benzene cantake years. In July the state?sDivision of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources shut down 11 Kern County oil fieldinjection wells and began scrutinizing almost 100 others that were potentiallycontaminating protected groundwater. The Environmental Protection Agency, whichhas ultimate legal authority over underground injection, ordered stateofficials to provide an assessment of the water-contamination risk within 60days, and the letter from the state Water Board confirms that illegalcontamination has occurred at multiple sites. California?s oil and gasfields produce billions of gallons of contaminated wastewater each year, andmuch of this contaminated fluid is injected underground. California has anestimated 2,583 wastewater injections wells, of which 1,552 are currentlyactive. Wastewater injection wells are located throughout the state, from theChico area in Northern California to Los Angeles in the south, and even includeoffshore wells near Santa Barbara. Solomon will discuss how we got where we are in terms of civil liberties and war, and the challenges faced by those concerned about current policies. Sponsored by Santa Clara County Democratic Club, Solomon's presentation begins at 7 PM and is open to the public without charge. Solomon is the executive director of the Washington D. C.-based Institute for Public Accuracy and was associated for many years with F.A.I.R. (Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting) and the Center for Investigative Reporting. His book, War Made Easy: How Presidents and Pundits Keep Spinning Us to Death, was called "brutally persuasive" and a "must read" by the Los Angeles Times. He has been compared with Upton Sinclair, Lincoln Steffans, and I.F. Stone for his willingness to take on a "good fight without fear of consequences." His article in the latest issues of The Nation,"The Government War Against Reporter James Risen,{ exposes the government's attempts to hide facts from the public, retaliating against whistleblowers like Risen, and is one more example of Solomon's efforts in behalf of transparency and press freedom. Spencer -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: Norman Solomon on October 20 Date: Sat, 18 Oct 2014 20:20:50 -0400 From: Lizloyal at aol.com To: spencer.graves at effectivedefense.org Press Release Surveillance State, Warfare State will be the timely provocative topic Norman Solomon, nationally recognized media critic and author of a dozen books on media and public policy, will address on Monday, October 20th in the banquet room at Harry's Hofbrau, 390 Saratoga Avenue in San Jose. The program follows a no-host dinner at 6 PM. William Deresiewicz will read from his new book, Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life. After the reading, he will answer questions and engage in conversation with former Stanford University Dean of Freshmen, Julie Lythcott-Haims ('89). Deresiewicz is an author and former Yale professor. In Excellent Sheep, he levies sharp criticism on the current system of elite American education, the phenomenon of tiger parenting, and college essay counselors. His book is directed at everyone who collaborates in mindless meritocracy, including students, teachers, parents, and university alums. Deresiewicz and Dean Julie will discuss the pitfalls of the elite education machine in America, and explore what a meaningful and rewarding college education should truly involve. The California Supreme Court removed Proposition 49, a measure similar to the proposed 28th amendment, from the November ballot thus precluding the public from voicing its opinion. Local democracy advocates then contacted elected officials and candidates in the upcoming election, asking them to declare their position on the Move to Amend 28^th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. As opposed to the U.S. Supreme Court rulings in /*/Citizen's United/*/ and a litany of cases supporting corporations as persons, the signed pledges for a 28^th Amendment declare both that "Only human beings, nor corporations or other legal entities, are persons with constitutional rights" and "Political contributions and campaign spending are not equivalent to political speech and can be regulated". The 32 elected officials and candidates who declared their support included federal and state elected officials who will have a say when Congress and state legislatures take up the amendment to the U.S. Constitution. At the federal level Congressman Mike Honda and candidate Ro Khanna supported the pledge. At the state level Senators Jim Beall and Bill Monning as well as Assemblyman Rich Gordon signed on. Also of note, California Attorney General Kamala Harris signed the SCC-MTA Pledge to Amend, as well as candidate Dave Cortese in the San Jose mayoral race. SCC-MTA views the two-part Pledge to Amend as a litmus test to see which elected officials will support efforts to end corporate constitutional rights which infringe upon the rights of state and local governments and harm individual citizens, such as the /*/Citizens United/*/ decision, which allows corporations unlimited campaign contributions, and U.S. Supreme Court decisions that have prevented GMO labeling, permitted the sale of cigarettes near schools in violation of state law, invalidated warrantless OSHA inspections of businesses, and removed nearly all remaining restrictions on campaign contributions by the wealthy. **Publicly Declared Supporters*** ***of the Move to Amend 28****^th **** Amendment** **Incumbents** Jim Beall CA Senate-15th District Cindy Chavez Supervisor-Santa Clara County Rich Constantine City Council-Morgan Hill Dave Cortese Supervisor-Santa Clara County Rich Gordon CA Assembly-24th District Kamala Harris Atty General-State of California Mike Honda Congress-17th District Michael Kasperzak, Jr. City Council-Mountain View Rich Larsen City Council-Los Altos Hills Peter Leroe-Munoz City Council-Gilroy Jamie Matthews Mayor-Santa Clara Bill Monning CA Senate-17th District Jan Pepper Mayor pro tem-Los Altos Rod Sinks City Council-Cupertino **Non-Incumbent Candidates** Daniel Bobay City Council-Milpitas Dominic Caserta City Council-Santa Clara Bill Ferguson City Council-Milpitas Eric Filseth City Council-Palo Alto John Karl Fredrich City Council-Palo Alto Marsha Grilli City Council-Milpitas Ro Khanna Congress-17th District Paul Kloecker City Council-Gilroy Roseann Alderete Lacoursiere City Council-Santa Clara Deepka Lalwani City Council-Milpitas Rajeev Madnawat City Council-Milpitas Robert Marini Mayor-Milpitas Rob Means City Council-Milpitas Voltaire Montemayor City Council-Milpitas Mohammed Nadeem City Council-Santa Clara Raul Peralez City Council-San Jose Greg Unangst City Council-Mountain View Cory Wolbach City Council-Palo Alto Click below to Unsubscribe -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... [image: Earthjustice - Take Action Today] TAKE ACTION! Stop California from spraying pesticides anywhere, at any time! [image: Take Action] [image: Farmer spraying pesticide on soy field, Toa55/Shutterstock] California is proposing a plan to spray any pesticide anywhere, for any reason, without public input. Take action before October 31 to stop this deadly proposal! Dear John, California regulators are proposing to give themselves a free pass to spray pesticides anywhere they want, at any time. *Unless you and I speak up now?before October 31?* the proposed plan would allow the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) to give blanket approval for the spraying of 79 pesticides and other chemicals, including substances linked to cancer, birth defects, miscarriages, and the collapse of bee populations. According to the plan, the state agency would have the right to approve new pesticides and other expansions of the spray program with no public review, notice, or analysis of the health and environmental impacts on the specific locations to be sprayed. The plan would also directly threaten California's booming organic farming industry by forcing farmers to spray organic fields as part of mandatory statewide programs. *Let the Department of Food and Agriculture know that this is not okay! * Californians care about our health and protecting vulnerable groups such as infants, pregnant women, and other sensitive populations. With the proposed plan?s blank check to use pesticides, playgrounds and schools could be sprayed, and rivers, streams, and drinking water wells could be poisoned. Earthjustice is fighting multiple battles to stop reckless pesticide use in California and across the nation. Please help us win these critical battles! *Make your voice heard now.* Thank you, [image: Elizabeth Forsyth photo] *Elizabeth Forsyth* Attorney California Office [image: Take Action] *P.S. I've attended maybe 15% of the monthly Santa Clara County MTA meetings and 5% of the meetings of their weekly "Build Democracy, End Corporate Rule (BDECR)" meetings. This included helping with their "Pledge to Amend" campaign mentioned in the subject of this email. I've been more active in other electoral reform efforts including the California Clean Money campaign (CAClean.org) and Dream Menders-San Jos? (formed by refugees from MoveOn). The latter group organized showings of 3 movies in the past year ("The United States of ALEC", "Inequality for All", and "Pay2Play") at the San Jos? Peace & Justice Center, officially co-sponsored by the Santa Clara Green Party. I also wrote most of the current text for the Wikipedia article on "Electoral reform in the United States", which compares initiatives to overturn Citizens United with other proposed electoral reforms. The employees will get over $40,000 as owed wages which is the difference between what they were paid and the the Californian minimum wage of $8 per hour. The company has been fined $3500 for the violation. "We are not going to tolerate this kind of behavior from employers," Susana Blanco, district director of the US Labor Department was quoted as saying by the Mercury. The eight Indians worked from September 8 till Dec 21 2013. Some of the workers worked for up to 122 hours per week or over 17 hours a day. They were paid in Indian rupees, Mercury reported. The Labor Dept. came into picture after their San Jose office received an anonymous tip. "This was discovered through an anonymous tip, and we need that kind of information to discover these sorts of illegal situations," Blanco was reported as saying by the Mercury. The company is called Electronics for Imaging (EFI). It earned nearly $200 million in the third quarter this year, reportedly up 11 percent from the same period last year. The company said it brought some IT employees from India temporarily to help its local IT team with the relocation of its headquarters from Foster City to Fremont. "During this assignment, they continued to be paid their regular pay in India, as well as a special bonus for their efforts on this project," said Beverly Rubin, vice president of HR Shared Services with EFI, quoted by the San Jose Mercury. "During this process we unintentionally overlooked laws that require even foreign employees to be paid based on local US standards." The company said it cooperated fully with the U.S. Labor Department once it became aware of the problem, and paid the back wages of the employees. The company will ensure that this sort of "administrative error" won't occur again, Rubin said. The $1.21 an hour was the lowest wage paid to workers that Blanco said she was aware of in the Northern California district, according to the Mercury. In 2012, Sunnyvale-based Bloom Energy was ordered to pay owed wages to 12 workers from Mexico who were being paid $2.66 an hour in Mexican pesos. The workers were repairing power generators. "It is appalling that foreign labor is being brought in under these circumstances," Blanco said, the Mercury reported. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "LaborTech" group. The article you cited mentioned a case filed by the US Department of Labor. A company in Monterey, CA, has been sued by multiple employees.[1] A court action against that company is currently on the calendar for Wed., Dec. 3, in California Northern District Court, Judge Lucy H. Koh, Courtroom 8 4th Floor, San Jose; another case was dismissed in 2012 in favor of the company accused of wage theft.[2] If there were interest, someone could attend and write something. Some publications accept everything that's submitted. Other publications require more work. If you are interested, we could discuss. If there were interest, we might be able to get the plaintiff in one such suit to speak before our next meeting, Nov, 20, 7 PM at the SJ Peace Center. However, I would not push that, because this does not relate to either of our two primary foci (environment and universal health care) nor to electoral reform. Spencer [1] Nathalie Thuy Van v. This will be discussed at the next meeting, November 20. We currently have one volunteer for Backup Treasurer: me. However, the County Council felt we should invite other volunteers and submit this decision to a vote at the next monthly meeting, currently scheduled for Nov. 20. (Section 2.1.2 of our bylaws say that the County "Council shall select a secretary and a treasurer from among its members, or may ratify the selection of these officers made at a General County Meeting." The article is also shared on the Oakland Tribune's Facebook page at "https://www.facebook.com/OaklandTribune/posts/10154702112080456". The Green Party has long supported IRV. A year ago I attended several meetings of the Santa Clara County Citizens' Advisory Commission on Elections with Steve Chessin and othes from Californians for Electoral Reform. If I understand correction, any governmental entity in Santa Clara County could use IRV for a future general election by simply deciding to do si. Santa Clara County has voting equipment that could support IRV and can easily get the software. However, to use it in a special election (e.g., to replace someone who resigned or died), the County Charter might have to be revised. I noticed that you could drop off vote by mail ballots there, so I took mine in. The box was so full that I could hardly get my vote in. I should have asked how often someone empties it and forwards to ROV. I am not so sure that voting too early is a good thing. I know, in one case, I picked up information in the past few days that changed the way I was going to vote. Julie Hover-Smoot is running for the Santa Clara County Board of Election. So far, she has not filed a fund raising report. However, I have received 5 mailings and at least one "push poll" call on behalf of Hover-Smoot. All of the mailings were paid for by the California Charter Schools Association. The Santa Clara County BOE can hear appeals of local school board decisions regarding charter schools. We saw this happen last year where the Morgan Hill Unified Schoold District rejected 2 charter school proposals and they were appealed. -- "Anytime you have an opportunity to make things better and you don't, then you are wasting your time on this Earth" - /Roberto Clemente/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
