If you might be interested, please review the application procedure on the web (mentioned in the email thread below; please excuse my lack of concision on this). This is an unpaid group of people who meet once a month to consider issues related to fairness and transparency in elections and to advise the County Board of Supervisors and the Registrar of Voters on these issues. There is room for someone to help improve transparency by helping enforce reporting requirements, etc., possibly advocate for instant runoff voting and proportional representation as opportunities arise. I had considered applying before events convinced Betsy and me to move to the Kansas City area. I'm going to be sorry to see you leave the area. Who will be taking over from you as my contact with the Santa Clara County Green Party? I know you are an active Wikipedian. I'm going to forward you some email that appeared on the CfER core list about some research that shows there's less voting fraud with PR than with FPTP, in case you want to include that in the article on PR. As for the seats being filled, at the last CACE meeting they still had two vacancies. If one of them has been filled that person hasn't started attending. Of all the areas of climate change adaptation, desalination is the one that is most likely to be made environmentally acceptable by technological advances. In particular, nano-technology filters to reduce energy requirements and industrial use of the waste solutions from desalination process (one company has done a pilot project to make cement in this way) all reduce the ecological impact. One other project that I know of uses solar energy to desalinate agricultural runoff, returning water for irrigation and removing residues of pesticides and fertilizers from the environment. Pinkney's Status - Jill Stein Attends His Court Appearance Message-ID: <14cc5988ad3-7d4-3454f@webstg-a06.mail.aol.com> No Justice for PoliticalPrisoner Rev. Edward Pinkney Hundreds Pledge OngoingSupport for Political Prisoner Posted on April 15, 2015 by sourcenutmeg FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 14, 2015 At 8:30 a.m., April 14, 2015, politicalprisoner Rev. Edward Pinkney came into the Berrien County Courthouse in St. Joseph,Michigan in handcuffs, but with a smile on his face. For the next three hours, he, alongwith almost 200 supporters, witnessed another egregious travesty of justice in JudgeSterling Schrock?s courtroom. As you may know, Rev. Pinkney has spent morethan a decade fighting the Whirlpool Corporation takeover and Emergency ManagerSystem in place in several Michigan communities, led by Michigan governors andthe powerful Upton family. The takeover includes Whirlpool?s devouring of thousandsof acres public land to build corporate offices, a 5-star PGA golf resort, andmillion dollar condos. He also has been wielding courage and angst against a corrupt justicesystem, the gentrification of Benton Harbor, and the genocide that has resulted from jobsoutsourcing and deeds of Mayor Hightower who borrowed $3.2 million on the backs ofBenton Harbor taxpayers. This all led to Pinkney?s exercise of a democratic right torecall the mayor of Benton Harbor. But, in an attempt to silence Rev. Pinkney, BentonHarbor hunted him down, arrested him, and held a kangaroo court. Since December, he hasbeen incarcerated in horrendous conditions in the Michigan prison system. No Jus tice forPolitical Prisoner Rev. Edward Pinkney Approximately two hundred supporters attendedthe April 14 his evidentiary hearing on two motions. Eyewitnesses describe a scene ofpre-planned theatrics as Pinkney?s attorney Tat Parish rolled out evidence thatjuror Gail Freehling, who served on the all- White jury that convicted Pinkney with noevidence, lied about her personal and professional relationship with County ClerkSharon Tyler. The prosecution called both Ms. Freehling andMs. Tyler to the stand along with other community members who should/could haveattested to the validity of this relationship. Instead, the majority of questions posed wereanswered with, ?I don?t recall? or ?I don?t remember? or ?I don?t know.? In the final outcome, Judge Schrock denied aretrial ruling against the defense. The judge even pulled out notes that were clearlypre-written with wording he intended to put forth even before the court proceedingstook place. One eyewitness stated, ?In looking at the guiding principles in a normalsystem of justice, we might have prevailed as the defense put forth a strong case. But,the Berrien County justice system is not the norm.? In addition to the denial for retrial, JudgeSchrock also ruled Rev. Pinkney pay restitution in the amount of close to $1,800to Mayor Jim Hightower for his mental anguish and loss of time from his dutiescaused by the recall election and Pinkney?s trial. This is another travesty as any governmentofficial should be prepared to face a recall election?a democratic right of Americancitizens. Jill Stein, Green Party President, waspresent at the hearing and held a press conference immediately following the hearing. SeveralMichigan leaders spoke at the conference. A rally was also held across from thecourthouse. Once again, this judge refused to allow Rev.Pinkney?s release on bond pending his appeal. An appeal will be filed within thenext 42 days. Warner--facilitatorCaroline--note takerJim--timekeeperTian--vibesAgenda for next month--Tian Sandy came later Treasurer's report--we have (or had before hat passing) $761. The phone bill was large last month. We are going to change our phone. We still need a new assistant treasurer, because Spencer is leaving. GPCE PlenaryTian volunteered to be a delegate. Message needs to go? out to ask for delegates. Warner will write it.State party meeting on Saturday will be at San Jose State. We are not responsible for food or anything. We get a discount on Social Forum (is that correct?)Sunday we will meet at the Low Income Self Help CenterFood will be bagels, muffins, fruit and coffee for breakfast and vegan pizza and salad for lunch. Caroline has already identified sources for this.We need to recruit people for registration, and we need to identify housing info. Warner will talk to Sandy about that.At the May meeting we will discuss moving the date for the June meeting. Web pageThe County Council approved Drew to be in charge of the web page. ?Tabling for Earth DayTian did San Jose State. He sold a lot of buttons and stickers and got two contactsCaroline did Santa Clara University. Got $11, 2 contacts, and gave out two voter ?registration forms.Jim talked to Drew? about De Anza. They had De Anza Greens staffing a table. Their artist has made a poster. We need to see if we can get a copy. We talked about bringing the donkey/elephant page up to date. As far as I can see, we only need to change the part about bringing the troops home. We are not sure how to edit this.Since we have a new address, the Peace Center, and we will probably have a new phone number, we need to have an "Update the Lit" party to change our contact information. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... He's running against the Koch Brothers". "First, he's a stand-up guy. When we told him about the Keystone Pipeline in the summer of 2011, he immediately set to work helping us block it. He strategized, he used his bully pulpit in the Senate to spread the word, and he devoted staff time to pressuring the State Department. Contrast that with, say, Barack Obama who was mostly silent about climate change his whole first term, and managed to make it all the way through the 2012 campaign without discussing it. Or Hillary Clinton, who after initially saying she was "inclined" to approve Keystone has gone entirely mum on the most iconic environmental issue of our time. Who showed up in New York for the People's Climate March? Bernie Sanders. Who said, straightforwardly in today's official announcement, "the peril of global climate change, with catastrophic consequences, is the central challenge of our times and our planet." That would be Bernie Sanders." Gerry
