The _County Council_ (http://cagreens.nationbuilder.com/r?u=http://www.cagreens.org/county-councils&e=79fd70da7fdc31ba7c14de42c5a9ec8fb37eea47&utm_sour ce=cagreens&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=anc_2016_ctycnl&n=2&test_email=1) is the legal body of the state Green Party (GPCA) _on the county level_ (http://cagreens.nationbuilder.com/r?u=http://cagreens.org/county-parties&e=79 fd70da7fdc31ba7c14de42c5a9ec8fb37eea47&utm_source=cagreens&utm_medium=email& utm_campaign=anc_2016_ctycnl&n=3&test_email=1) . It is generally responsible for organizing and coordinating Green Party activity within the county, including party building, internal and external communications, supporting local Green candidates and representing county Greens to the state Green Party. County Councils are elected in the June presidential primary election every four years by registered Greens. County Councils hold public meetings and are governed by their own county bylaws, and have their own email lists for internal business and social media for public outreach To run for County Council, one must be a registered Green in the county (and district where applicable) in which one seeks election, and have been registered Green at least three months prior to the opening of the nomination filing period, which begins in 2016 on January 4th. To qualify for the ballot, a potential County Council candidate must gather twenty nomination signatures from registered Greens in the district (_fewer in counties with less than 1,000 registered Greens_ (http://cagreens.nationbuilder.com/r?u=http://www.cagreens.org/bylaws/2013-06 -23#Section_6-2_Elections&e=79fd70da7fdc31ba7c14de42c5a9ec8fb37eea47&utm_source=cagreens&utm_med ium=email&utm_campaign=anc_2016_ctycnl&n=4&test_email=1) ). These nomination signatures are then checked for validity by the County Registrar. If enough are valid, one's name is placed on the ballot for a public vote of registered Greens in the June 7, 2016 primary. (If fewer candidates qualify for the ballot than the number of seats, all are declared elected, and the election does not appear on the ballot.) The 2016 signature gathering period is between January 4 and March 11. To begin the process, one must go to the County Registrar's office to fill out the declaration of candidacy, obtain the official signature gathering forms and then later, hand them in upon completion. Some counties also allow for electronic filing of the declaration of candidacy, with authorization for someone else to pick up your nomination papers. _Contact your county registrar here_ (http://cagreens.nationbuilder.com/r?u=http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/voting-resources/new-voters/county-elections-offices/&e=79fd70da7fdc31 ba7c14de42c5a9ec8fb37eea47&utm_source=cagreens&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign =anc_2016_ctycnl&n=5&test_email=1) for more information. How many County Council seats are up for election in your county? The _number is determined_ (http://cagreens.nationbuilder.com/r?u=http://www.cagreens.org/bylaws/2013-06-23#Section_6-1_Members&e=79fd70da7fdc31ba7c14de42c5a9e c8fb37eea47&utm_source=cagreens&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=anc_2016_ctycn l&n=6&test_email=1) in each county Green Party's bylaws. Most counties have seven, a few of the smaller have five, and the two largest have more: Alameda (9) and Los Angeles (44). All counties elect their County Council members at-large county-wide, except Los Angeles elects its from 12 State Senate Districts within the county. If you qualify for the ballot, we also encourage you to post a campaign page for yourself on the League of Women Voters Smart Voter website, which they offer for free to all candidates, even for County Council. It is also possible to gather signatures for a group of County Council candidates on the same petition, this the result of additional Green Party lobbying efforts, which led to the state legislature's 2015 passing of a _Green Party section in the state Elections Code_ (http://cagreens.nationbuilder.com/r?u=http://www.cagreens.org/elections-code/ab477-signed&e=79fd70da7fdc31 ba7c14de42c5a9ec8fb37eea47&utm_source=cagreens&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign =anc_2016_ctycnl&n=9&test_email=1) . The County Council is the legal body of the state Green Party (GPCA) on the county level . To qualify for the ballot, a potential County Council candidate must gather twenty nomination signatures from registered Greens in the district (fewer in counties with less than 1,000 registered Greens ). Contact your county registrar here for more information. How many County Council seats are up for election in your county? The number is determined in each county Green Party's bylaws. For more information: www.smartvoter.org/voter/cand.html If you are also considering running for State Legislature or the US Congress in 2016, the signature gathering period for both starts at the same time as for County Council, so you can gather signatures for both at the same time ? the successful result of a 2012 change in state law that the Green Party lobbied for. It is also possible to gather signatures for a group of County Council candidates on the same petition, this the result of additional Green Party lobbying efforts, which led to the state legislature's 2015 passing of a Green Party section in the state Elections Code .? Ask your county registrar about this option. We hope you will consider getting active in the Green Party on the county level through your local county council -- and help build a strong and independent Green electoral option in California. Drew and Debbie were there briefly.Warner passed out agendas and agreed to be facilitator. Caroline was note taker, Tian was time keeper, and Sandy was vibes.Intros, announcements, and agenda additions:Caroline added Sunshine Alliance and the Naomi Klein movie to the agenda.Shamako Noble is running for U.S. Senate. We can work on getting signatures for him.John said the DARK act was stripped from the Omnibus BillPete said there was a demonstration in SF on Friday against IslamophobiaTian is having his Festivus Party on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at 7:00 at his clubhouse. For those of us who have been missing him, Fred will be there.Sandy announced a big victory for the homeless in getting permanent sanctioned encampments. Treasurer's Report:We currently have $714 in ?the treasury. Jim will do the necessary money things in January and then we need a new Treasurer. Sandy will post something about this on the discuss list. State Party Issues:Plenary in San Diego on January 23-24. Caroline is the only delegate so far, and she is iffy because of chemo schedule. We need to get signatures for Shamako Noble to get on the ballot for U.S. Senator. We will get Shamako to speak at De Anza. He is a De Anza alumnus. Sandy and Caroline volunteered for County Council. Obviously, we need more people. Tian will go to Warner's and fix his email and the Facebook page. The proposal on what Drew can and cannot do with or without County Council approval was consensed. Sandy got the student volunteers to get signatures on a petition for renters' rights. We worked on the Donkey/Elephant page to bring it up to date. Brian is going to do the editing. We will have to work on it more next month. Tabling: ?January 9 at Cesar Chavez Park we should be getting signatures for ?Shamako, and, if a miracle occurs and we have 8 candidates for County Council, signatures for them, too. Climate: ?Naomi Klein movie. There are some folks who want to show the new Naomi Klein movie, although it has been shown around here before. It costs $300. We are willing to chip in $50. Sandy Thought we could probably find a church that would let us show it for free. I will put him in touch with the other people. We should be able to table there. Tian and Caroline are going to the Sunshine Alliance meeting on January 10. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:
