[GPSCC-chat] Google Voice for 408-22-EARTH?

Hello, Pablo et al.:

PABLO: Did you transfer a land line or cell number to Google Voice in 2011? The test I did with Google Voice a few days ago invited me to transfer a mobile number. That made me wonder if it would work with a land line. I assume it would provided the number belongs to the subscriber and not the phone company. (If I understand correctly, all mobile numbers and those land line numbers acquired after around 1980 or so are owned by the subscriber. Earlier numbers may belong to the phone company and may not be transferred.)

ALL: Please see Pablo’s comments below. I’m happy to pay the one-time transfer fee. If someone else does it, they can either call me and I’ll provide credit card information or they can pay it, send a receipt to Jim Doyle, who will mail you a check, which I will then cover..

I was told that when we changed phone companies a few years ago: If we had acquired our phone number before that date, we might not be allowed to keep the number we had. Fortunately, we were allowed to keep our number, which we had acquired in 1982 or 1984. This law may not apply to transfers from a land line to Google Voice — or I may have heard incorrectly. However, Pablo Ghenis said that Occupy San José (OSJ) used Google Voice when they had a camp (and I think he had previously used it personally). OSJ used it with Google Groups and had the OSJ number forwarded to multiple phones and to different people at different times of day.
