Eve Message-ID: http://events.stanford.edu/events/424/42479/index.shtml-----TOWN HALL MEETINGTO FRACK OR NOTA SMALL COLORADO CITY HAS TO MAKE A DECISION(A dramatization) Almost daily city and county governments are struggling to balance the positive benefits (tax and fee revenues, jobs, etc.) associated with the production of oil and gas within their jurisdiction with possible negative effects on the health and safety of their citizens (threats to water supplies, health threats, etc.). Vast supplies of much needed oil and gas from Shale formations are being developed and enhanced by the techniques of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing. A hypothetical town meeting will be held wherein an oil company is asking for permission to drill and hydrofrac several oil and gas wells within the city limits. Students will portray members of the City Council of West, Colorado, county officials, executives and technical representatives of the oil company, regulatory officials, trade associations, representatives of the environmental community, local business persons and local landowners. The Seminar is being co-sponsored by the Department of Energy Resources Engineering, The Stanford Energy Club, and the GSB Energy Club. Members of the Stanford Community and the public are invited to attend. Students will be asked to prepare a role for a specific participant, attend an introductory session on February 4, participate in the Town Hall, and write a short critique of the Meeting. If yes, please reply to the email below from the Courage Campaign. I can't go, but if you can, I'd encourage you to consider making a statement something like the following: * Research has shown that where Comcast is a local monopoly, their rates are higher. This makes them in violation of anti-trust law in the US, which makes it illegal for a company to use monopoly or oligopoly power to harm consumers. * The harm goes far beyond pricing to virtually every issue of concern to California residents. For example, what motivates people to support the Islamic State in Syria and the Levant or the Taliban in Afghanistan or the Russian separatists in the Ukraine? Their actions are incomprehensible from the news readily available in the US but quite rational with a sufficient understanding of the other side. If we understood that other side better, we'd have more effective foreign and national security policies -- and major multinationals would make less money from governmental corruption around the world. But unlike the majority of those activists and the millions of frustrated cable customers in the rest of the country, *YOU can tell the CPUC**to its face, why this merger is bad* for California and the nation. /11 Courage members have signed up already, but we need FOUR MORE to step up so that the CPUC takes notice. /*If not you, Spencer, then who?* *JOIN ME, along with our executive director Eddie and other Courage members THIS THURSDAY, March 12th to speak out at a game-changing public hearing about the Comcast merger!* Here are the details: *WHEN: Thursday, March 12th, 2015, 9:00 AM ? 10:30 AM* *WHERE: California Public Utilities Commission* * 505 Van Ness Ave* * San Francisco, CA 94102* /We?ll provide you with talking points and training ahead of time, so you?re fully comfortable and prepared to speak./ Comcast is expected to stack the hearing with corporate cronies who will comment in support of the merger. So we need you to*join us so we can fill the room with people who have the courage to stand up for freedom of choice* and speak out against this disastrous deal. *Spencer, the CPUC must hear from people like you before it decides whether to approve or reject the merger! CLICK HERE to RSVP today, and we?ll be in touch to provide you with all you need to know.* If the CPUC votes to kill this deal, Comcast?s national domination plan could be over. Comcast needs a win in California because our state includes the most lucrative markets. An administrative judge overseeing the CPUC's review of the merger recently recommended that it be APPROVED. But because public opposition to this merger has been so intense, *Comcast is on the ropes and the CPUC has specifically opened up this meeting for people like you to come forward*. They want to hear how California residents feel about this merger before they decide. That?s where you come in, Spencer. *Your experience with Comcast -- from service interruptions to high prices to lousy customer relations ? could help sway the CPUC to vote against the merger.* /Even if you are not a Comcast customer, you can speak about lack of competition and why it?s important to have real choices./ *YOU could be the tipping point to stop this merger! CLICK HERE to let us know if you can be one of the COURAGEOUS 15 and join us at the hearing THIS THURSDAY.* The CPUC has respected public opinion before, and if we get enough people to testify on the 12th, we can convince them to do the right thing again. /We want you to feel comfortable, so let us know if you can attend, and we will make sure you have everything you need to say your piece./ *Join us at the CPUC hearing THIS THURSDAY, March 12th to defeat the Comcast merger!* Looking forward to seeing you there, Laura, along with Annie, Eddie, Emma, Lindsay, Paul, Scottie, and Tim (the Courage team) /p.s. Then we can strip out pages 8 and 10, staple them together, and recycle the rest. If you don't want to distribute them yourself, I can find a use for them. The Fremont city council will be meeting on the oil trains issue on April 7, and I can take bunches of them upstate too. When Metro has already done the writing and production for us, it's a shame to let the resource go to waste. Oil trains are a great issue because they involve environmentalism, obstruction of the petroleum economy, abuses of corporate power (public risk, private profits), toothless government regulators, relatively mainstream organizations such as the Sierra Club and 350.org. It also involves a lot of very energetic and optimistic young people. I believe the pop up Warner mentioned was a pushy request to write the Federal Communications Commission supporting net neutrality. I just removed that pop up. 2. Jim Doyle informed me that I had set the permissions so only I could change that. That should now be fixed: Anyone in the "sclara" group on the "wangari.cagreens.org" server should now be able to change that file. 3. If you have problems with either "1" or "2", please let me know. 4. "The House Communications and Technology Subcommittee, which oversees the FCC, held a hearing to discuss the FCC?s proposed net neutrality regulations on Wednesday, Feb. 25. ... As of 2013, five of the 31 members of the subcommittee own stock in" the four largest Internet Service Providers (Verizon, Comcast, Time Warner Cable and AT&T), which oppose the FCC ruling, and "No members on the subcommittee reported owning stock in Netflix, Facebook, or Twitter", which support the recent FCC decision. (http://maplight.org/content/companies-with-stake-in-net-neutrality-debate-have-financial-ties-to-subcommittee-members-ov). I don't know if big cable and the major ISPs have the votes to overrule the FCC, but I doubt if humanity has won the war over net neutrality: We've won one battle, but Comcast, Version, Time Warner and AT&T have too much at stake to give up yet. We must continue to watch this closely. Best Wishes, Spencer On 3/30/2015 6:14 PM, Jim Doyle wrote: > I tried the link warner provided which took me > to the gpscc web page. We will speak out about the injury of a homeless woman last Friday while Caltrans was bulldozing her tent in a ?clean-up? near Story Road. Thousands of Silicon Valley?s homeless still have no place to lay their heads tonight, almost four months after the Jungle was destroyed by the City of San Jose on December 4. In fact, the situation will get worse on Wednesday, when the County winter shelter program discharges an additional estimated 270 homeless out onto the streets. People who were evicted from the Jungle have moved and been displaced over and over with no end in sight. Some moved to the Walmart parking lot, then Roberts Road, then south of Tully, then to Phelan at the railroad tracks, then to north of Tully, then to Monterey Highway, then to Almaden Road, and they are still moving. When questioned by the Board of Supervisors on March 24, County officials stated that there are some 5300-5400 homeless for whom there is no housing or shelter available. When asked for their plan to address this situation, they responded, ?There is no proposal at this time.? Having no proposal to house or shelter the homeless is not acceptable in the richest area in the world. A five-year plan is not acceptable, because people have no place to go right now. They are persecuted with endless nightmare evictions, harassment, criminalization, and frequent seizure of their personal belongings. Cesar Chavez dedicated his life to organizing for justice for the poor, and San Jose?s homeless and their allies are building a movement for the same cause. We call for an immediate commitment by elected officials to affordable housing for the homeless and for all people in need in Silicon Valley. While housing is being built, we call for establishment of legal campgrounds with appropriate sanitary facilities and trash disposal. Finally, we call on the state legislature to enact SB 608, the ?Right to Rest Law?, that would outlaw discrimination against homeless people in public places.
