My biggest concern is that it could make it easier for governments to persecute journalists and whistleblowers, who expose crimes committed by governmental officials and hidden by secrecy laws. Nobel-prize economist Stiglitz has said that it may also make it easier for companies to sue governments for lost profits -- so when products kill people, we'll have to pay the companies not to kill us. He said it will require governments to pay oil companies for profits they lose from successful efforts to combat global warming. It would also stifle creativity by tightening copyright law excessively. I believe the TPP can be beaten, like the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) was four years ago. For more of my thoughts on this, see Wikiversity, "Trans-Pacific Partnership, media, corruption and security" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategic_lawsuit_against_public_participation). In addition to the actions suggested in the Wikiversity article, we could use more people working to improve the Wikipedia article on "Trans-Pacific Partnership". The Wikipedia article on SOPA got a million views between Thanksgiving and Christmas 2011; I believe that was instrumental in killing that act. The current Wikipedia article on TPP is, I believe, unbalanced in favor of the proponents. We need more people trying to improve the balance. At least this is what Restore the Delta, the Sierra Club and other opposition believes.. However, the agenda for that special meeting has not yet been posted. https://scvwd.legistar.com/Calendar.aspx The meeting is scheduled for 10:00 AM on a Friday. I hope that there is no bad portent in that date. Several organizations are trying to coordinate the messages that the public can give the directors at that meeting. That includes Restore the Delta, Sierra Club, Democracy for America (San Mateo), Food and Water Watch. I know that 10:00 is not convenient for those with 9-5 jobs. However, having some Greens there would help. Also, I will get some background on the positions of each of the elected directors, put it in another email and lets make sure that each director hears from us. In 2016, we expect that there will be at least one Green Party candidate for U. S. Senate in California. As part of qualifying to get their name on the Primary Election ballot, each candidate needs either to pay thousands of dollars or collect 10,000 petition signatures. Even if a candidate does not collect the full number, his or her candidate fee is at least partially reduced. At this time, your County Council members are trying to prepare for the signature gathering period in January by starting to get volunteers to collect signatures (or at least sign a candidate's petition -- or even hold a house party for others to attend and sign a petition). If you are willing to help with any of these, please send an email to Warner Bloomberg at _wb4d23 at aol.com_ (mailto:wb4d23 at aol.com) . We also will need petition signers for candidates for the GPSCC County Council in January and February. We also expect that there will be ballot initiatives that Green Party members will want to support circulated this Fall and Spring. We also need volunteers to become County Council members. The County Council is the small group of volunteers that serves as the local contacts with the Green Party of California, coordinates with local progressive organizations, and serves as the general organizers to keep our county Green Party active. At present, we have four County Council members -- so there are three vacancies that could be filled by appointment for the next nine months. Go Green!!! Next month's meeting will also be the third Thursday, due to the holiday. Then we will return to the fourth Thursday. Warner told us that January 4 to March 11 is the time to get signatures to be on the County ballot for County Council. We would love to have some new people. It is easy to get the signatures. People don't have to be Green to sign the petitions, We are probably also going to have a Green candidate for Senator. We can collect signatures for them, too. We are hoping to have at least one signature-obtaining occasion. We will be needing delegates to the state Green meeting in San Diego in January. So far, we have Caroline. Although our treasurer was absent, we collected $11 in the hat passing. By the way, we will be needing a new treasurer in January. We obtained approximately $25 at Junior State. There will be no Holiday Peace Fair, so there goes our biggest opportunity to sell schwag. We are seeing if we can participate in the Peninsula Peace and Justice Center's Peace Fair. Tian told us about Bike Party for this week, which will start at Race and 280. We discussed possibly tabling at the beginning of the ride sometime. December's meeting will be an opportunity to update our literature. Please download a Donkey/Elephant flyer and write more current issues to include. Brian will edit and print our new version. If you are artistically inclined, feel free to make new artwork as well. I'm thinking we should include our new address and phone number, too. Bernie Sanders will be having a rally here on January 9. We felt this would be a good opportunity for getting petition signatures and passing out our new Donkey/Elephant pages. Naomi Klein has a new movie. It costs $300 to show it. We have approached 350.org and some other organizations to see if they would like to go in on showing it and getting a big venue. Please come to the December meeting. The following web site makes it very easy to do: https://act.eff.org/action/tell-congress-to-vote-no-on-the-tpp Enter your zip code and follow instructions. You can be done in a few seconds. TPP Article 18.78 poses a major threat to journalists and whistleblowers: Officially, it broadly criminalizes "unauthorized and willful disclosure of a trade secret", but "trade secret" is defined so broadly it could include evidence of violations of law. Similarly, TPP Article 18, Section J requires Internet Service Providers to take down web sites accused of copyright infringement -- without a court order and with no effective recourse. These two provisions could seriously limit free speech. Fortunately, I believe the TPP can be beaten as easily as SOPA was beaten 4 years ago. The vote on Fast Track last June was 218 to 208. If we flip 6 votes and the rest remain unchanged, the TPP will go down 212 to 214. Best Wishes, Spencer Graves ph: 408-655-4567 p.s. We just launched this new action, which directly messages representatives in Congress: https://act.eff.org/action/tell-congress-to-vote-no-on-the-tpp The actual vote won't be until 2016, so you can expect the intensity of pressure to ramp up as the vote gets closer. -- Jeremy Malcolm Senior Global Policy Analyst Electronic Frontier Foundation https://eff.org jmalcolm at eff.org Tel: 415.436.9333 ext 161 :: Defending Your Rights in the Digital World :: Public key:https://www.eff.org/files/2014/10/09/key_jmalcolm.txt PGP fingerprint: FF13 C2E9 F9C3 DF54 7C4F EAC1 F675 AAE2 D2AB 2220 OTR fingerprint: 26EE FD85 3740 8228 9460 49A8 536F BCD2 536F A5BD Learn how to encrypt your email with the Email Self Defense guide: https://emailselfdefense.fsf.org/en -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
