Date: Fri, 02 Oct 2015 12:30:24 -0700 From: Rob Means To: Gerry Gras CC: scwebcontact at greens.org Gerry, I'm writing you in your role as leader of the Santa Clara County Green Party. Do you agree that big money and powerful corporations have control of our democracy, that we actually have an oligarchy as Jimmy Carter recently named it? If so, then your organization can help turn things around. Attached is a resolution passed by the Santa Clara County Democratic Party that calls for a "We The People" Constitutional Amendment. In essence, it says money is not speech and corporations are not people. If you have membership or executive board meetings, we would like to share an outline of the problem, and why this solution is one we can all support. A Constitutional Amendment is part of the "political revolution" that Bernie Sanders is working toward. Please contact me to discuss our future, or for more information regarding our grassroots movement. BTW, as mentioned in our phone conversation, there's a rally in front of the Supreme Court next Tuesday. I'll forward the announcement to you in another e-mail. -- Rob Means, Education Work Group, Chairman Santa Clara County MoveToAmend, http://scc-mta.org/ 1421 Yellowstone Ave., Milpitas, CA 95035-6913 408-262-0420h, 408-262-8975w, Rob at MeansForDemocracy.org --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Learn more about the rally at http://www.yesonca49.com/rsvp?utm_campaign=petition_drive&utm_medium=email&utm_source=yesonca49 Specifically, the local Green Party could pass a resolution just like the Democratic Central Committee did. (See it at http://meansfordemocracy.org/blog.html#SCCDCC ) SCC-MTA is reaching out to about 50 organizations for similar support. However, since this is an educational effort, getting some time on an agenda or before a group of Greens to discuss the problem and this solution is even more desirable. Thanks for your past support. Thank you for responding immediately. We are more than happy to volunteer for the Green Party. Our Senior Project requires a minimum of four hours of volunteer work. It did not specify the type of volunteer work that should be done. However, our teacher encouraged us to volunteer for a political party because it would be a perfect time to do so especially now that the presidential election is just around the corner. A paper about the said activity is due 10 days after the activity was done and it should submitted before the third Friday of November (the friday before Thanksgiving break). Our goal is to acquire an insight on the reality of campaigning or organizing for a political party We would like to volunteer as a group. I will be coming along with 3-5 other classmates. We are not very particular with the type of work; we're happy to help in the best way we could. It would be nice if we could do something within this month so that we may be able to submit a well-written paper rather than a rushed one. Thank you so much for your time. I'm hoping that I answered all your questions. Please feel free to email me about anything. Sincerely, Carmelle I hope this message reaches you. WHEREAS, the people's right to free speech and fair elections are essential to democracy and effective self-governance; however, U.S. Supreme Court decisions have granted multi-billion dollar corporations and other artificial entities the same rights as natural persons to unrestricted spending on political speech, thus severely restricting the ability of federal, state and local governments to enact reasonable campaign finance reforms and regulations regarding corporate political activity; and WHEREAS, the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights are intended to protect the rights of human beings ? not artificial entities such as corporations which have special advantages not enjoyed by human beings plus the many traditional and necessary rights and powers provided for by state law, and usually put profits for shareholders ahead of concerns for the greater good of society ? but the U.S. Supreme Court decisions extending constitutional rights to corporations have resulted in increasing domination by these powerful entities and a corresponding loss of rights for people; and WHEREAS, sixteen states and more than 550 local governments throughout our country have passed resolutions or ballot initiatives calling for a constitutional amendment establishing that corporations should not have constitutional rights and money does not equal speech, and the people of the United States have previously used the constitutional amendment process to correct decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court that are widely deemed to be egregious, wrongly decided or significantly out-of-step with the prevailing values of the populace; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that it is the position of the GREEN PARTY OF SANTA CLARA COUNTY that A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT IS NEEDED TO ESTABLISH THAT 1. The rights protected by the Constitution of the United States are the rights of natural persons only, and that artificial entities, such as corporations, limited liability companies, and other entities, established by the laws of any State, the United States, or any foreign state shall have no rights under this Constitution and are subject to regulation by the People, through Federal, State, or local law. 2. Federal, State and local government shall have the right to regulate, limit, or prohibit contributions and expenditures, including a candidate?s own contributions and expenditures, for the purpose of influencing in any way the election of any candidate for public office or any ballot measure, and shall require that any permissible contributions and expenditures be publicly disclosed. However, there might be some disagreement about how to accomplish that link. The VTA is planning to place a one-half percent sales tax measure on the 2016 ballot to pay for an expensive underground BART extension to cover the six-mile route. Instead of spending $4700M for BART technology, what if we use Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) technology instead to provide similar service levels and 12 above-ground stations for only $200M (4% of the BART cost)? That's what I have proposed to VTA management. To my surprise, they don't seem interested. The Green Party may want to go on record supporting a PRT alternative. Or, the Green Party of Santa Clara County may want to sign onto the "NO" argument to be published in the sample ballot next year. If there is interest from this on-line group, I will start drafting the wording for such an argument. In the meantime, learn more about PRT technology in general and my proposal for applying PRT technology to this transit link at http://sunnyhillsneighborhood.org/crossing.html#what http://sunnyhillsneighborhood.org/BART-PRT-comments.pdf VTA needs the measure to pass with a 67% super majority. Even with support from all the traditional backers of these sales tax measures (this is the fourth one), attaining that super majority is challenging. Some effort from those of us who see the BART Burrow as a boondoggle could shave a few percent off the expected strong support at the ballot box, perhaps enough to cause the measure to fail. Date: Sun, 25 Oct 2015 16:49:24 +0000 (UTC) From: Greg Jan Reply-To: Greg Jan To: Dear Greens, If you're a KPFA member, your either just received your ballot or will get one within a few days, for the governing "Local Station Board" (LSB) election. It's extremely important to vote. I (and the San Francisco, Contra Costa and Alameda County Green Parties) have endorsed the "United for Community Radio" (UCR) team of candidates, which includes Iraq War veteran Scott Olsen, who was injured in the police raid on Occupy Oakland. They are committed to strengthening and re-energizing KPFA, as well as to rescuing the station from the current LSB majority. That majority (known as "Save KPFA"), has allowed the network to accumulate a multi-million dollar debt while squandering a million dollar bequest at KPFA. (UCR is also the same group which previously _worked to elect Green Party members Kate Tanaka, Samsarah Morgan, Aki Tanaka, and Larry Shoup to the LSB, and which is currently running Oakland Green Don Macleay). You can find out more about the United for Community Radio candidates, their platform of community-empowered radio, as well as their full list of endorsers (including Laura Wells, Aki & Kate Tanaka, Samsarah Morgan, Larry Shoup, Suzanne Baker, Bob & Patti Marsh, Gayle McLaughlin, Tim Laidman, and many others), here: http://www.UnitedForCommunityRadio.org/ This is a very important election. You can help preserve the only progressive radio network in the country. You can help the people you care about with a more active role for KPFA in the crucial survival issues so many of us are dealing with every day. I strongly urge you to please rank the United for Community Radio candidates as your top nine candidates, for the nine available KPFA station board seats!
