Finishing my half baked thought on the WFP being able to campaign in
coordination with democratic candidates: Since the Pacific Green Party was
in communication with democrats to get cross endorsed by the PGP, it seems
that political parties can do this type of work for other parties with no
problem. HOWEVER, if you are a member of PGP or WFP and participating in
their endorsement voting process, this automatically means that you can not
at the same time be registered as a democrat. So the people who resigned
from Our Revolution may indeed be in search of a Pink Unicorn legal entity
that would allow them to meddle directly in the campaigns of democrats
while still being independent of the democratic party.

Democracy Now! had an interesting segment on today's show (8-25-16) about
the fact that half of the chiefs of staff at Our Revolution resigned in
protest over having Bernie's former campaign manager lead the organization
and also over the fact that Our Revolution is being organized as a 501 c
4. Frankly, I'm not sure what kind of organization could be formed that
would be legally in the black to both be independent of any particular
candidate's campaign and yet still be able to act in direct coordination
with many different campaigns. Apparently a 501 c 4 a) can only spend half
or less of its revenue on politics (so where does the other half of Our
Revolution's revenue go to) and b) a 501 c 4 is just like any other
Political Action Committee in that it is not allowed to communicate
directly with any particular candidate's campaign. The people who resigned
from Our Revolution may be looking for a legal entity to form that is the
equivalent of a Pink Unicorn, when a) there is no such animal as a pink
horse and b) Unicorns don't exist either. Maybe if they formed a separate
political party they could do all the things that they want to do and be
legally in the black, sort of like the Working Families Party endorsing and
campaigning for democrats? I don't even know if WFP legally campaigns for
the candidates that they endorse. Of course the Democratic Party itself
coordinates with individual candidates' campaigns, so maybe what they need
to do is form an entity that is under the umbrella of the Democratic Party.
Who knows if the head honch at s at the Democratic Party would even allow that.

Eugene City Club

Our Revolution Meeting Notes

I went to the Eugene City Club to see the live stream of the Bernie Sanders
event tonight (August 24th, 2016). My notes start at the point where Bernie
started speaking.

Bernie said that he is going to mostly look forward, not back. (This is the
same song and dance that Obama uses to justify not impeaching George W Bush
for war crimes after he left office.)

[*Someday*, as Fred Hirsch of the South Bay CA Labor Council likes to say
after mouthing the words 'freedom and justice for all' at the end of the
pledge of allegiance] we will all have the freedoms that Bernie claims here
we now have in the good old USA.

He mentioned the struggle for LGBTQA+ rights to love whomever you want.

He mentioned Super delegates, but didn't elaborate on what to do about them.

He claimed that the current Democratic Platform is the most progressive
platform in history and that it will not simply sit on the shelf gathering
dust (as I predict it will). He claimed that the platform will form the
basis for electing down ticket candidates.

“We changed the conversation about our future.”

Congressional candidates are campaigning on making college tuition free.

Bernie endorses Clinton's education plan that will make public colleges
tuition free for any member of a family earning less than $125K per year.

The $15 per hour minimum wage movement is taking off (at the local level)
nationwide.

54% of Republicans now say that people earning more than $250k per year
should pay more income taxes.

Social Security cuts have been taken off the table and now the conversation
has shifted to discuss and campaign to expand Social Security.

Private prisons are bad and the Justice Dept has recently moved to divest
from private prisons. Bernie is working in the Senate to get the US govt to
divest from private detention centers as well.

Clinton does not support universal health care. However, Clinton wants to
double the funding of community health centers, which will eventually lead
to universal access.

Clinton also wants to triple the funding for college debt relief for
doctors who practice in underserved areas.

Obama supports TPP, but Bernie does not. A majority of Americans now
understand that the current batch of trade agreements were bad deals.

Bernie then announced the formation of a new organization called Our
Revolution, which will focus on local campaigns. Bernie will not be in
charge of Our Revolution. He has put in place a young man who will be the
Executive Director. Other key staff members, both women and men, will also
help to lead the organization.

Our Revolution supports local progressives (over 100 of them) running for
state and local offices from School Boards to Senate seats.

Our Revolution also supports ballot initiatives. There are over 100 ballot
initiatives on the ballots in November 2016 and Our Revolution focuses on
supporting 7 of them. These include:

Citizens United Repeal
Automatic voter registration
Alaska voter registration initiative
Prop 61 in CA would have the state pay the same prices for drugs as the VA.
WA has a Citizens United initiative. (CA does too, but this wasn't
mentioned.)
CO has a single payer initiative.

Bernie gave a shout out to achieving justice for Native Americans and also
earlier in the program there was a shout out about the pipeline that
Natives are fighting.

Then the Executive Director of Our Revolution was introduced.

He pointed out that there were some 200,000 watch parties streaming the
event tonight, plus the event was being broadcast on Facebook and Free
Speech TV.

To continue the revolution, people are urged to visit ourrevolution.com/act
and sign up.

The Executive Director is a young lad. Sorry I missed getting his name.

Next Saturday at 10AM-11AM is the next meeting of the local Bernie group at
Whirled Pies (aka Cosmic Pizza) on W 8th Ave near downtown Eugene. At their
next meeting they will be discussing a possible name change for the group.

Additional editorial comments from John Thielking:

There were very few young people at this meeting. I think I might have been
the youngest (age 53).

During the entire program there was not a single mention of the many wars
that the USA is involved in.

What about mentioning how the bankers on Wall Street profit off of sending
our brothers and sisters to die overseas and how many brown and black
people they kill while they are over there?

Bernie completely glossed over the fact that he endorsed Clinton.

At a similar event at DeAnza College in San Jose, CA there was an open mic
after the presentation. My former room mate got a rousing round of applause
when he pointed out how Clinton is a warmonger.

In my mind the real Revolution started when chants of 'No More War' broke
out during a certain former CIA director's speech at the DNC. If you are
serious about that kind of Revolution, then join me in campaigning for Dr.
Jill Stein for President and Ajamu Baraka for Vice President. I will be at
the corner of W 7th Ave and Van Buren in Eugene, OR every day from 8AM-9AM
until November 8th, 2016 holding my 3ft x 5ft Jill Stein banner. (I will be
taking a break from October 12th to October 20th to go see my brother in
CA. It would be really nice to have enough people join me so that I don't
have to stop the event during this break.)
