Malik Rahim is coming to the Bay Area tomorrow. Word is that Malik is running for Mayor of New Orleans next year. I am contacting you about an some important work being done in solidarity with the displaced residents of New Orleans. >From November 20-27, hundreds of activists from around the country will converge on New Orleans to take part in an historic week-long project to rebuild the 9th Ward of New Orleans. This solidarity action is sponsored by Common Ground Relief (www.commongroundrelief.org) , a grassroots relief effort that began after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated much of New Orleans. This effort will focus on clean up and restoration of the 9th Ward, an area made infamous in the Hurricane-related press because of the long standing social justice and civil rights abuses endured by this community. These efforts are designed to give hope to the displaced residents who have a right to return to their homes and community. I am contacting all of my friends, family and associates to invite you to join this effort by sponsoring these efforts in some way. There are many, many ways you can help me and aid this vital cause: 1. Come to the kick off event for the Common Ground's Roadtrip for Relief: ROADTRIP SEND-OFF EVENT at Studio Z Wednesday, November 16th 6:00-9:00pm 314 11th Street @ Folsom $10-200 donation at the door (nobody turned away) Performers, Music, Dancing, Silent Auction Guest of Honor: Malik Rahim of Common Ground, Willie Ratcliff, Bayview Times, more TBA... 2. Plan to go down to New Orleans to help out. The first of many mobilizations is Nov 20-27 (and it's not too late to join in!), with more planned for January and Spring break 2006. For more info, email sfcaravan@mutualaid.org or call 415-575-5545. 3. Loan us your car: If you can't come, could you get by without your car for a few weeks, knowing you're lending it to an accountable activist for an important cause? To coordinate loaning your vehicle, contact Jeff G at: jeffgiaquinto@yahoo.com or 415-643-8649 4. Donate money to Common Ground Collective; There are many reasons to give your donations to smaller, grassroots efforts- almost all of the funds you donate will go directly into providing aid and support for the residents of New Orleans. Common Ground Collective has been operating free medical clinics, distribution centers (handing out food, water, diapers, hygiene and cleaning supplies), and emergency home repair work crews that have benefited thousands of remaining and returning New Orleans. They have done this incredible work without government support. Your donation will make a huge difference. Please consider your holiday/year end giving and include Common Ground in your philanthropy. Go to www.commongroundrelief.org for more info on this group's activities and accomplishments. Send tax-deductible contributions to: Community Futures/Common Ground Relief 221 Idora Ave Vallejo, CA 94591 *Community Futures is our fiscal sponsor. 5. Donate Supplies! Clean up and rebuilding efforts are generating a list of specific supplies that we need. If you know anyone in the construction field or anyone who has industry contacts that can either donate or deliver needed items at cost, please contact them on our behalf. The list of things we need are posted on the common ground website: www.commongroundrelief.org/wish_list. Please consult this list and consider what you can help us obtain. 6. Donate your frequent flier miles: Some activists have to fly down due to time constraints. We need miles to help purchase tickets for low income activists to join us. Efforts are being made to reach out to evacuees who may want to help with the rebuilding efforts. Miles will be needed to help them return home. If you are so moved and want to help, please do not hesitate to contact the the organizers- sfcaravan@mutualaid.org. Everyone's efforts and support is needed. PASS THIS EMAIL ALONG TO FOLKS YOU KNOW WHO MAY BE INTERESTED.... We need to get the word out about this important cause. Thank you for your time and support.
