Hi, Caroline:

Might it be convenient for you to provide links to the other
polls you've seen?

To be precise, the results of any poll depend on both what
and whom you ask. Some pollsters work very hard to understand
public sentiment. Others conduct polls to support their
propaganda. Each polling organization has a reputation, and one
can compare results based on the reputation of the polling
organization. Beyond asking about the reputation of the
organization, you can ask how the questions were worded, how the
respondents were selected, and how the questions were posed.

In 1936, Literary Digest magazine predicted that the
Republican Alf Landon would beat Roosevelt by a landslide.
Roosevelt got 61%. His victory was predicted by George Gallop.
However, many people didn't believe Gallop, because the Literary
Digest had successfully predicted the outcomes of the presidential
elections of 1920, 1924, 1928, and 1932. Literary Digest asked
their (high income) subscribers to mail in a post card with their
preferred candidate. That method worked in 1920, 1924, 1928 and
1932. In 1936, the 99% supported the New Deal, despised by
readers of the Literary Digest. Gallop was meticulous about his
methodology. Literary Digest ceased publication in 1938: It's
wealthy subscribers could not afford to be so misinformed.

Best Wishes,
Spencer
