Green Institute Forms Science Policy Initiative

The Green Institute (www.greeninstitute.net) has developed a science policy
initiative. Dean Myerson, the Institute’s Director, says that it is more
than timely for Greens to develop science policy positions, to incorporate
them into Green political work, and to put them before the people. He says,
“becoming firmly and deeply involved in the debate over science is not a
matter of choice for Greens, but a matter of necessity for the world.”

The Green Institute is the only national policy institute in the United
States based explicitly on the values and principles of Green politics, an
eco-social analysis and vision that has spawned Green Parties in over 100
countries. Myerson says that the core mission of the Institute is to create
and offer pragmatic solutions to the critical problems of the day - and
beyond from the local to the global level. Myerson points out that the Green
philosophy is a broad and coherent program that transcends a narrow sense of
politics to include quality of life, the social fabric, ecological wisdom,
eco-social justice, global responsibility, nonviolence, community
development, and respect for the spiritual dimension of life.
Working under a Science Fellowship, biologist/ecologist Tom Baugh is guiding
the development of the Science Policy Initiative. Baugh has worked in
science information, education, and policy, planning, and program
development for several federal agencies. He is a member of the American
Institute of Biological Sciences and the Society for Conservation Biology.

Myerson says, “We plan to convene a committee to examine issues of science
from a Green perspective, as they relate to public policy in our modern
society. This committee will examine issues of interest to its members and
the Green community on an ongoing basis for publication through Green
Institute Publications on the Green Institute website.” The website
currently consists of a bibliography of relevant papers and a book review.
Panel members are at work on informational papers.
