Green Party Black Caucus, DC Statehood Greens to participate in the
Congressional Black Caucus conference in DC, Sept. 16-18

• Green events at the CBC conference: Hospitality Suite, panels on reparations
and DC statehood, a walking tour

WASHINGTON, DC -- The DC Statehood Green Party and the Green Party Black
Caucus will participate in the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's 40th
Annual Legislative Conference (http://cbcfinc.org/alc-2010.html) at the Walter
E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC, from Wednesday, September
15 to Saturday, September 18.

Black Greens at the CBC conference will attend the CBC Reparations panel, and
will host several events, including a Friday evening Open House on
Reparations, a book panel on DC statehood, and a walking tour of Washington's
historic Shaw neighborhood. A schedule is appended below.

"The Green Party has taken the lead on a number of important issues on which
Democrats and Republicans -- including the Congressional Black Caucus -- have
mostly remained silent or retreated. This is the second year we're at the
annual CBC legislative conference, and we're back because it's time for Green
candidates to get elected to Congress -- and not only as "shadow
representatives" [which is the case for Washington, DC] -- and because we need
to challenge the Congressional Black Caucus on certain issues," said Joyce
Robinson-Paul, DC Statehood Green candidate for DC 'Statehood' (Shadow) US
Representative.

Led by Washington's DC Statehood Green Party, the Green Party has called for
full statehood for the District of Columbia, calling DC statehood part of the
unfinished business of the Civil Rights Movement and distinguishing statehood
from 'DC voting rights' (winning a vote in the US House).

Greens also demand an end to the War on Drugs and the private prison system,
which have together resulted in mass imprisonment of young black men for
nonviolent crimes, and support reparations for the descendents of Black
Americans who were enslaved. The party also supports Single-Payer national
health care (Medicare For All) and assistance for Americans who've lost jobs
and homes because of the economic meltdown, noting that Black Americans were
disproportionately victimized by lending corporations responsible for the
subprime mortgage and credit-access crisis. The Green Party's positions on
these and other issues stand in sharp contrast to the votes of many Democrats
and Republicans in Congress, including many CBC members.

Statehood Greens and Green Party Black Caucus members at the conference will
pay tribute to Dr. Ronald W. Walters, political science professor, author, and
director of the African American Leadership Institute at the University of
Maryland, who passed away on September 10. A panel on DC Statehood will
discuss a book edited by Dr. Walters and Toni-Michelle Travis: see the
Saturday listing below.
