Former Beirut Hostage, now Peacemaker in Palestine

at First United Methodist Church, Sacramento

Wednesday, November 30, 7:00 p.m.

Jerry Levin was CNN Middle East Bureau Chief in Beirut, Lebanon in 1984, when he was kidnapped by extremists and became the first of the so-called "forgotten" American hostages. His wife, "Sis", attracted international attention as her efforts in building a team of Muslim, Jewish, and Christian friends at home and in the Middle East, created the conditions for Jerry's escape, after eleven and a half months in captivity. Sis' book about those events, Beirut Diary, was later made into an ABC-TV docudrama, Held Hostage.

Following that experience, Jerry and Sis decided to dedicate their lives to peacemaking in the Middle East through non-violent work and witness. 20 years later, Dr. Lucille (Sis) Levin is an internationally known peace educator and certified professional mediator, and Jerry is working as a full time volunteer with Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT). Although Birmingham, Alabama is still their home (they now have 5 children and 11 grandchildren,) they have spent the past four years in Palestine --except in early 2003, when they led a CPT delegation into Baghdad as the U. S. invasion of Iraq began. They were there throughout many of the bombings of the Iraqi capital, and several weeks of its subsequent occupation.

Jerry is part of CPT in Hebron, and Sis is a full time volunteer in Palestinian schools and peace-building organizations, assisting teachers and young adults to teach peace. They will present photos and stories of their experiences with courageous nonviolence to create a more stable peacemaking environment, in the Holy Land and elsewhere. There will be no charge, but a free-will offering will be received. The first $300, the Levin's normal honorarium, will be given to their nonprofit support agency, "Every Church a Peace Church," and funds beyond that will go to support their work in Hebron and Bethlehem. Also, copies of Jerry's latest book, West Bank Diary, will be available.
