Placerville---100,000 Rings --International Bell ringing ceremonies to grieve and protest the deaths of Iraqis, as well as the 2000 and counting U S service personnel. Wed. Nov. 2nd 5:15p m El Dorado County Courthouse, 495 Main St.

Much was justifiably made last week about the American death toll in Iraq reaching 2000. But little is said in this country about the number of Iraqis killed since the occupation of Iraq began three years ago. This month marks the first anniversary of a report issued by the British Lancet - one of the world's most respected medical journals - which estimated the Iraqi death toll to be 100,000. To commemorate this anniversary and bring attention to the cost paid by the Iraqi people, Voices for Creative Nonviolence and Justice Not Vengeance call for a bell ringing ceremony to take place in communities throughout the nation. Such a service - during which a bell will be rung 1000 times - will take place in Placerville, on Wednesday, November 2nd at 5:15 pm at the County Courthouse. This day being the Mexican, "Day of the Dead," the ceremony will not only honor the Iraqi victims of the occupation, but the deaths as well of the 2000 and counting American service people. This will be a solemn occasion, with no parading of signs or speeches.
