The Buzz: What's to lose by voting Green?

Last Updated 4:52 pm PST Monday, October 30, 2006
Story appeared in MAIN NEWS section, Page A3

It's not exactly a case of "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em," but the
plucky folks at the always colorful Green Party appear to be taking a
page from the campaign playbook of the big boys and girls.

The Greens are running radio and television commercials in races all
over the country. Here in the Golden State, Green candidates for
governor, insurance commissioner, secretary of state and three
congressional seats have ads on the airwaves.

Third-party resources being what they are, of course, the Greens' paid
media presence is on a somewhat smaller scale than their Democratic and
GOP counterparts, who are likely to spend an estimated $6 billion
nationwide.

Green gubernatorial hopeful Peter Camejo, for example, has a TV ad
budget of about $7,000. He's hoping to get a little time on cable
stations in Sacramento, L.A. and the Bay Area for four 15-second spots
that were produced by an all-volunteer crew.

But Camejo's radio spots are already up and running in Sacto and S.F.
--
and of small comfort to Democratic rival Phil Angelides, who is lagging
badly behind GOP incumbent Arnold Schwarzenegger. In the spot, Camejo
suggests that many Democrats would like to vote Green, but don't want
to waste their vote.

"This time," Camejo says, "the Democratic candidate is not going to
win, so you're free to vote for whoever you want. In fact, a vote for
the Democrat will send no message. But a vote for the Green Party ...
this would be a powerful message."
