This was my fourth time elected as a Trustee, although I was not
officially registered as a Green Party member for the first run. These
are four year terms so I have been a member of this board for 12 years
and my win this time will mean that it will be 16 years when the term
is
over.
During my years on the board, there have been 6 elections. Two other
seats come up for election in the 2 year cycle in between my own
elections. As a result, I have served with some 10 other Trustees over
the years. None of them have been particularly progressive. I have been
on the board with Democrats and Republicans and there have been some
battles over wedge issues.
School board elections are technically non-partisan so no party
affiliation is listed on the ballot. But my green politics are well
known around here. I am politically active on many levels and very
outspoken.
This last election, my campaign was based on making the district more
eco-conscious, taking the emphasis away from No Child Left Behind,
supporting music and the arts in the schools, keeping pace with
technology, and making physical improvements in our campuses.
My campaign spent about $1200. $600 came from the California Green
Party, $100 came from the local Progressive Democratic Club, $200 came
from an individual donor, and the balance from small individual
donations.
The money was spent on signs and on print ads in the local papers. The
ads were mostly statements and endorsements from local educators and
other well known local people.
I had the support of the local Sierra Club, the local Green Chapter,
and
one of the unions in our school district. I think I won because people
know me by now and I have built a base of supporters.

Dear fellow California Greens,
Congratulations on your candidacy in the November 2006 elections.
I am writing articles about California Green candidates, for both our
state and national party newsletters.
What I looking from you is anything from a few sentences to a few
hundred words, about
- the issues you ran on
- how you campaigned/what you raised/spent
- why you won
- endorsements/coalitions/media
- role of Green Party in your campaign
- something interesting about you/your qualifications for running for
office
I don't need anything fancy - just send me text and I will edit it into
the articles.
Thanks so much,
Mike Feinstein
