I received my notice from SCC Registrar of Voters yesterday. Ballots
will be in the mail starting Jan. 7, 2008. Voting is upon us.
Time for procrastination has ended and time for serious thinking has
begun.
Some general commments:
It appears that National "approved candidates <http://www.gp.org/>" list
will end up looking identical to the California list: Ball, Brown,
Johnson, McKinney, Mesplay, Swift. Brown's name is not there yet, but
should be shortly.
Will this be an election where identity politics determines the
outcome? I hope that you have all taken the time to read Alex's post at
Green Commons. If not, do it now. http://www.greencommons.org/node/870
<http://www.greencommons.org/node/870> I mention this because it appears
that some of the campaigns are based almost solely on identity politics,
for good and bad.
Right now, significant international attention is focused on two issues:
Iraq / Afghanistan war (the peace issue) and Global Warming
(euphemistically called Climate Change). This is especially true with
an International Meeting this week in Bali and a seriously flawed energy
bill having passed the House and now being considered in the Senate.
It is my opinion that any candidate for the Green Party Presidential
Nomination must be representing the party on BOTH of these issues. That
filter removes some of the candidates from my consideration. It should
be a question for Dr. Ball this next week.
This is a critical time for the Green Party. This year, with Peace and
Climate Change being major issues, Greens must assert ourselves. Make
sure that you, and every Green you can contact, votes.
