International Day of Climate Action - October 24th, 2009

On October 24th, people from more than 100 nations will be taking part in a global call to action against climate change.

School children will plant 350 trees in Bangladesh, scientists will hang banners saying "350" on the statues on Easter Island, 350 scuba divers will dive underwater at the Great Barrier Reef. These creative actions and more will send a powerful message to world leaders that the global community demands a reduction in the amount of C02 in our atmosphere to 350 parts per million, the level scientists have identified as the safe upper limit.

Locally, several organizations have plans to participate in this worldwide call to action - local churches will ring their bells 35 times, volunteers will work for 3.50 hours restoring Ravenswood Pond, and there will be a local "Green Roofs Initiative" kick-off event, to name a few activities.  If you would like to join in these or other activities, or if you would like to create your own event, please visit 350.org for information and further details.

To do our part, Acterra's Green at Home program is working to complete our 350th HouseCall before October 24. We need less than five more sign-ups to reach this goal! To sign up for YOUR free energy-saving HouseCall (residents of Redwood City, Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Sunnyvale and Cupertino only), please visit our Green at Home HouseCall webpage.  We have a prize ready for the 350th resident, so sign up today!

Green Your: Halloween

Once a festival to celebrate the end of the harvest season, Halloween has transmogrified into a celebration of all things costumed and candified. Although some may associate the holiday with disposable pirate hats and "fun sized" treats, others are seeing ways in which this orange-hued holiday can be "green."  The Green Your website offers nine tips for making your Halloween green, as well as facts about the holiday and links to resources.  For more information, please visit the Green Your: Halloween website.
