Voice Your Concern about Lehigh Southwest Cement's Plan to Greatly Expand the Limestone Quarry
October 15, 2012
Dear Brian Good,
There is an important meeting concerning the environment in our immediate area this Wednesday evening, Oct. 17. Your input on this issue will be of critical importance!
In June 2012 the Santa Clara County Planning Commission approved Lehigh Southwest Cement's reclamation plan, which will greatly expand the limestone quarry according to the Midpeninsula Open Space District Press Release. BACE filed a lawsuit opposing approval of the plan. The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (MROSD) also opposed the plan citing these concerns:
• Potential impacts on visitors and staff at Rancho San Antonio. They want to make sure they are protected by getting Lehigh to agree to deal with the adverse environmental effects to the greatest extent possible.
• Dust impacts and Visual Impacts - significant dust is generated by the quarry and East Materials Storage Area, a huge mound of waste material excavated from the quarry which could grow to four times its current size of one million cubic yards if the ruling remains in place.
• Water Pollution of Permanente Creek, which flows through Rancho San Antonio Park, and the "significant ecological impacts of of elevated selenium, including its adverse effect on aquatic organisms and the food chain." Water is currently pumped into the creek out of the bottom of the huge quarry.
As neighbors of Rancho San Antonio and Lehigh, their concerns are also our concerns.
MRSOD entered into negotiations with Lehigh to resolve these issues. Now, they must decide whether to continue negotiations, file a lawsuit against Lehigh, or drop the negotiations altogether.
The Midpeninsula Open Space District is holding a special meeting this Wednesday, October 17 with only two items on the agenda: the first at 6:00 is to discuss "anticipated litigation". The meeting will take place at the Historic Del Monte Building, 100 So. Murphy, Sunnyvale.
The public is invited to comment before the first agenda item during oral communications. It is important that members of the community let the District board members hear about our concerns and our desire for them to act on the public’s behalf.
If you can attend, please arrive at the meeting before 6:00 pm in order to express your encouragement to MROSD to take leadership to protect the park visitors, the park staff, and the environment by filing a lawsuit against Lehigh. This could help to achieve the most protection possible for their Open Space and our surrounding neighborhoods. MROSD also welcomes written comments.
If you cannot attend but would like to send a message to the board urging them to act, you can do so at www.openspace.org/about_us/contact.asp?s=board.
Please forward this email to your friends, neighbors, family and colleagues.
Regards,
— The Bay Area for Clean Environment Team
