[GPSCC-chat] Reviews of restaraunts that are potentially GMO free

I am likely going to start including reviews of restaurants that are GMO free (ie where you can find SOMETHING significant on the menu that is GMO free) along with my nonviolent movie reviews in the Peacemovies.com newsletter and on the web site.  See two sample restaurant reviews below:

Marie Callenders 620 Blossom Hill Rd, San Jose, CA

Paul Short has a anti-GMO products boycott list that includes Marie Callenders (the tv dinners I suppose). I am now officially taking Marie Callenders the restaurant off of the anti-GMO boycott list because of the following observations: 1) Last Sunday the chef who was cooking the omelettes during brunch used olive oil* instead of the (probably soy oil) that he used the previous week and 2) after inquiring about how they cook the Prime Rib dinner for Fri and Sat dinner service I found out that a) the meat is cooked in the oven without any oil and b) the vegetables are steamed (not deep fried or stir fried with oil as they are at some places). Please encourage Marie Callenders to expand their GMO free menu offerings.   I don't know about their pies for instance. Coco's pies all have corn syrup in them for instance, which is GMO.

*Note that olive oil is often (up to 1/2 the time) fraudulently contaminated with GMO oils, so having a restaurant cook with olive oil is only a modest improvement over cooking with canola oil or soybean oil.

Flames Bakery and Restaurant

449 S Winchester Blvd, San Jose, CA

I decided to visit this restaurant today to check out how GMO free they could be. I came away very satisfied. I ordered the broiled chicken breast with steamed broccoli and mashed potatoes with gravy. The vegetables are normally sauteed in olive oil (which has a 50% chance of being GMO contaminated). To get steamed broccoli you have to be specific when you order and the broiled chicken is always broiled with no oil used at all. Steaks here are charbroiled which I suppose is the same thing. If you don't specify broccoli for the vegetables you will likely get squash or zuchinni which could be GMO. Broccoli so far is GMO free for sure. The mashed potatoes are GMO free, except possibly for the gravy which has vegetable broth of unspecified origin in it. The salad with no dressing  was just plain lettuce and shaved carrots with crutons (crutons likely contain GMO soy as most bread contains this).  I declined to order the extra bread that comes with the meal
because the waitress was unable to confirm weather or not the bread had soy or corn syrup in it.  On a previous occasion I was told that all of their deserts contain corn syrup, also GMO. So I passed on the desert. Overall, I would give this place a B+ for being GMO free (upon request, so be careful when ordering).  The service was prompt and professional. Oh and one more thing.  I ordered decaf coffee, which tasted fine, but later I noticed that the sugar didn't specify that it was cane sugar on the label so it could have been beet sugar which is also GMO.
