[GPSCC-chat] SJ Pride Proposal to participate, Aug 17-18

Also Jim, it occurs to me that to my knowledge you hadn't attended any of these events, so I can't see how you could give much of an evaluation as to their success.  As leaders we need to be greasing the skids to make it easier for people to take the initiative and do Green Party organizing, "be seen wearing Green", getting out and being visible -- not throw water all over their ideas and grumble about spending money.  A negative do-nothing approach grinds people down and discourages them from participating.  My attitude is let's spend our money to do organizing!  That's what we are collecting it for, not to sit on.  We gain nothing by playing it safe.  Now more than ever we need to be out making connections and certainly registering voters.

So far I know of three of our core Green Party Organizers who are ready to participate: John Thielking, Debbie Stinson and myself.  There is an ether pad at

        https://pad.riseup.net/p/gpsccsjPride2013

for us to organize who will cover what time (noon to 7pm Saturday and Sunday).

Here's the main SJ Pride web site:
      http://sanjosepride.com

So all who'd like to join in, step up and let's make this thing go.  We can set a goal to sign up say 10 new Greens each of the days (and then try to far exceed the goal).

Green is GO!

Drew

>Jim, I think it's not using fair debate tactics to word your point: "I am not aware of anyone registering green at the parade or shortly thereafter based on our presence in the parade. "  How would you or any of us know (unless we had directly sent in the forms ourselves)?  Since we are not hovering over the Registrar of Voter's shoulder checking any incoming new registrants and we are not sent any kind of alert, we have no way of knowing.

>Money is certainly not either.  Especially when we go into a semi-hostile environment such as one dominated by the Dems.

>And here's something to consider: how many (marketing-speak) impressions, contacts, and indeed registrants, contributors and new volunteers have we failed to connects since we have failed to have a booth low these many years.  It's time to step it up, not shrink back.  Very little positive can be had from shrinking back and all this negative do-nothing type sentiment.  Green is bold!  Famously our party's motto is "neither right, nor left, but forward!" its time to move forward.

>>First off a big thanks to John for stepping up to offer monetary and physical support for this proposal.
>>
>>
>>Secondly yes it would be good to start recording all that kind of stats for our events, but we don't have it for past events except what we imagine we remember (which may not be accurate).  However even when we do, outreach is something that frequently doesn't really lend itself to a cost/benefit approach.  "Being seen wearing Green" and having our signs out and participating counts in ways that we can not measure.  Planting seeds is something we have to constantly do since we have such a low profile (imposed on us in many cases by the Titanic Parties)
>>
>>
>>
>>Thirdly to be specific about the SJ Pride Event I and Tian and a number of others participated several years in the past (I can not speak to the whole 9 years since i got active in Green Party community organizing in 2004 and didn't immediately participate in this particular event until probably 2007 or so).  Previously SJ Pride had the aforementioned parade (which last 2 years and this will not take place, but probably next year again), and i think we focused on that part to the point where I'm not even sure if we tabled or not.  Tian and I handed out lots of literature along the parade route and made our presence felt.  I don't know what (if anything) it cost to participate in the parade.  So we have an apples and oranges situation here.  We can not directly compare.
>>
>>
>>I have often thought we Greens would be the natural fit for the LGBTQ community if the decision was purely based on values.  However the LGBTQ community is so deeply entrenched in the Dem's (and in general the status quo) camp that it is actually fairly challenging to get a hearing.  Right now I think we have more opportunity than perhaps we ever have had with the LGBTQ community.  Let's find a way to seize the day.

>>>      I agree (with Drew and probably everyone else) that we should not do everything based on money.  I'm essentially a full time activist right now, because I think what I'm doing is important for the future of humanity, and Betsy and I are able to survive on what we have.  Nevertheless, we (Spencer, Betsy and the Santa Clara Green Party) need to watch our finances.
>>>
>>>
>>>      Drew said, "For 7 out of the past 9 years the GPSCC has participated in the SJ Pride event." How much money did we spend for those events?  How many new Green party members did we get?  How much money did we take in?  How much did we spend?  What was our net?  How much did we spend for each new member?
>>>
>>>
>>>      I very much appreciate John's very generous pledge and his
commitment to be there both days.  However, unless we can
anticipate bringing in $300, we'll have to cover at least part of
the cost of that event from other sources.  If we subsidize
participation in SJ Gay Pride from other sources, we should make
sure the people who bring in those other funds feel like this is a
      good use of the money.
>>>

>>>      Spencer
>>>
>>>
>>>p.s.  I'm guilty of poor planning for the Foreclosure Summit last
September 15.  Occupy San José (OSJ) contributed roughly $120 for
that event.  Caroline and Merriam collected $25 or so for the
Green Party.  I should have passed the hat after the presentations
but before the discussion, but I didn't.  As a result, other OSJ
contributions subsidized that event.  That was a mistake.  If we
are going to subsidize one event from others routinely, we need to
discuss the finances openly, as noted above.
>>>
>>>
>>>p.p.s.  Is it permissible to ask why SJ Pride needs to charge that
much?  We table at other events without paying anywhere near
      that.

I think it is worth it to have a credible stage presence with a canopy and tables, especially if we don't have to haul that stuff ourselves.  I can also be there to table one or both days if needed.

I want us to be there. The normal price for a nonprofit (high I realize, no need to tell me) is $400 including the tables, chairs and overhead cover (not certain about power - forgot to ask).  He said we could have a "Ground only" deal where we supply everything for $300.  He said if that was still too much we should talk to him about additional possibilities.  One way or the other I propose we work something out with him and participate.
