[GPSCC-chat] Aug. 23rd -- Coalition on electoral reform

Hello, All:

I'd like to encourage all who can to come this Saturday, Aug. 23, 3-5
PM to a meeting of a new coalition focusing on electoral reform,
especially overturning Citizens United and various Disclose Acts. The
meeting will be held at Asian Americans for Community Involvement on
Moorpark, San Jose; see below.

This group was organized when CA Prop 49, the "Overturn Citizens
United Advisory Measure" was placed on the November ballot and before
the CA Supreme Court removed it. This group is trying to pull together
people from Move to Amend, the California Clean Money Campaign, Common
Cause, DreamMenders, the Green Party, the Mid-Peninsula Peace & Justice
Center, and anyone else with time and interest in electoral reform.

Electoral reform may not be anyone's most important issue, but
progress on global warming, public health, and virtually any other major
issue facing humanity today is largely blocked by dysfunctions in how
the public gets information about politics and decides how to vote in
elections, as noted by Lawrence Lessig and many others (see Wikipedia,
"Electoral reform in the United States").

I hope to see you this Saturday.

       Best Wishes,

Supreme Court’s Disqualification of Prop 49

DESPITE THE DERAILMENT WE WILL CONTINUE TO WORK TOGETHER

Bring a friend to discuss how to respond to the CA Supreme Court
decision; how to support the Disclose Act; how to approach the Sept. 8
vote on Citizens United in the U.S. Senate, how to get local federal and
state legislators to support a 28th amendment, how to make local
candidates accountable to voters for a 28th amendment, how to gain voter
pledges, whether to form a Democracy Coalition in Santa Clara County,
what to do for the Nov. 2016 ballot locally and statewide, and discuss
other great ideas surfacing since the California Supreme Court decision.

GET BIG MONEY OUT OF POLITICS. OVERTURN CITIZENS UNITED
