Hi Everyone,

I sent this feedback to Mike and Shamako based on our meeting tonight, and am forwarding it to the list along with his letter to Shamako and me in order to give everyone a good sense of the opportunities and issues involved in combining the Green June plenary with the Social Forum.

Hi Mike and Shamako,

We discussed this idea at the GPSCC meeting tonight and the response from the membership was generally favorable to the idea. I know the USSF local organizing committee is very friendly and open to the GP (I am on it). One concern of the GPSCC is the small size and capacity of its own active membership and whether it has the strength to pull it off logistically. One idea is to request some assistance from other Bay Area Greens as needed.

The fact that meeting venues and lodgings may be able to be coordinated with the much larger USSF efforts may make the logistics more manageable. These were our preliminary thoughts and we plan to discuss the situation again in our December meeting and have a good idea of what we are willing and able to do by the time of the Monterrey plenary.

Above all, the feelings of the membership were that this is an enormous opportunity and not to be missed, both for our local, Bay Area, and statewide Green Party work.

Sandy

Subject: Re: GPCA General Assembly in San Jose during US Social Forum

Sandy

Greetings. This is what I'd like to see:

The normal spring/summer GPCA General Assembly focuses on the budget and hearing
from candidates seeking election to our state Coordinating Committee and GPUS
Delegation. Then we also have breakout sessions for our statewide working groups
and committees, and then usually a few other decision-making items and/or
discussions. This normally occurs from about 8am-6pm on Saturdays and 9am to 4pm
on Sundays

This year the GPCA is talking about scheduling it in San Jose, holding our
budget session and some other business, but otherwise compress the meeting so
that our members could attend the workshops

Regarding the workshops, I could envision some political party/electoral-related
workshops, where in one workshop, we feature sitting/former elected Greens
talking about governing as a Green, and in another we have a workshop on how to
be an independent/minor party candidate and run for office; and maybe a third on
the more theoretical debates about party/movement organizing

I can also see the folks from Richmond (the RPA) wanting to do their own
workshop on how they beat Chevron, and that would include Green
Mayor/Councilmember Gayle McLaughlin in her own right

With these kind of workshops - and all the other good ones that will happen
there - I can see us emailing the more than 20,000 California Greens that we
have emails for, to come attend the Social Forum - and maybe have Greens in
neighboring state parties do the same.

The GPCA has a modest budget for meeting space. Hopefully we could rent space
for about 75 Greens on Saturday for our General Assembly, and maybe a few other
small breakout rooms, then otherwise direct our members to the rest of the
forum. Our funds could also be a small win-win to help with the financing of the
Social Forum by sending a little more $$$ to SJ State.

We have our next state meeting January 23-25 in Monterey and are going to be
discussing this on Friday at our Steering Committee annual retreat and Saturday
during our strategic planning session You both would be welcome to attend and
discuss these possibilities.

Thoughts?
