[Sosfbay-discuss] Shields and Brookes - Objectivity in the media?

Driving home from library / supermarket today I was listening to Mark Shields
and David Brooks on the New Hour. In an exemplary example of media objectivity
I heard:

- David Brooks say something to the effect that, In Washington it does not make
any difference if you are a Democrat or a Republican, all that counts is being
the Majority Party. The Majority Party uses the federal budget to buy votes.
This Republican Congress has been the worst of all at this and Bush has let them
get away with it."

- Mark Shields, commenting on the Roberts Nominaion, said that the Democrats
have allowed special interest groups to determine how they vote. This is
especially true where Sen. Reid met with NOW and, after his announcement of how
he will vote, a NOW spokesperson said "He got the message." His comment was
that when liberal interest groups say "jump", Democratic Senators ask "how high."

Not quite what most would expect from either.

I am not sure about Shields, that may have been rhetoric, but Brooks was exactly
right. If this country has to pay for Hurrican Katrina Damage, two things have
to happen. There must be some tax increases and EVERY congressman needs to give
up the pork that was slated for their district, the multi-million dollar bridges
to communities of a dozen, bridges to casino boats, etc.

It is time to track every Congressional member from California, at least from
this county, and figure out what they are willing to give up: I will tak on
Pombo. Then there are:Eshoo, Honda and Lofgren.

As for Shields comments, one reason some of these interest groups don't really
support Greens is that they don't think they can control us.
