Anyone living in San José and is available to do something today
is urged to call or email their city council representative to ask their
position on payday lenders (legalized loan sharking) and encourage them
to do the following two things. Whether or not you live in San José, if
you have the time to attend a City Council meeting at 6:30 PM today,
that would be great; there will be a vote on this issue.

             1. Oppose these predatory practices with their vote on
item 3a on TODAY's San José City Council agenda
(www.sanjoseca.gov/planning/hearings/PC/2012/Agenda/0425.pdf
<http://www.sanjoseca.gov/planning/hearings/PC/2012/Agenda/0425.pdf>).
(The wording of the resolution is so convoluted I can't figure out if we
should ask them to vote for or against the resolution, but asking them
to oppose payday lending should cover it.)

             2. Oppose any new business or renewing any contracts with
financial institutions involved in payday lending. This includes Wells
Fargo, which makes money from payday loans
(http://showdowninamerica.org/files/payday-final-091410.pdf) AND from
the City of San José
(http://www.sanjoseca.gov/clerk/ORDS_RESOS/reso_75471.pdf).

If you don't know which district you are in, that is available at
"http://www.sanjoseca.gov/planning/data/council_dist/default.asp" (click
"all districts" at the right). Then go to
"http://www.sanjoseca.gov/council.asp" to get contact information.
Below please find an email I just sent.

       Thanks,
       Spencer

Subject: Payday lending?

Dear Mr. Oliverio and Mayor Reed:

What is your position on payday lenders?

The information I've received suggest that they are legalized
loan sharks, further impoverishing some of the poorest of San José's
residents. I urge you to oppose these practices in two areas:

             1. Oppose these predatory practices with their vote on
item 3a on TODAY's San José City Council agenda
(www.sanjoseca.gov/planning/hearings/PC/2012/Agenda/0425.pdf
<http://www.sanjoseca.gov/planning/hearings/PC/2012/Agenda/0425.pdf>).
(The wording of the resolution is so convoluted I can't figure out if we
should ask them to vote for or against the resolution, but asking them
to oppose payday lending should cover it.)

             2. Oppose any new business or renewing any contracts with
financial institutions involved in payday lending. This includes Wells
Fargo, which makes money from payday loans
(http://showdowninamerica.org/files/payday-final-091410.pdf) AND from
the City of San José
(http://www.sanjoseca.gov/clerk/ORDS_RESOS/reso_75471.pdf).

       Thanks,
       Spencer Graves

Join ACCE and others at the SJ city council to restrict predatory payday
loan establishments. Payday lenders (legalized loan sharks) are more
predominant in lower income areas and minority areas and prey on the the
economic shortcomings of these people. Payday lenders are backed by the
big banks, particularly Wells Fargo and we all know how much we love
them. Check out this great report I found from the National People's
Action (I haven't done all the fact checking yet):
http://showdowninamerica.org/files/payday-final-091410.pdf

People asked for actions to do "IN" San Jose, so here ya go :)

Item 3a on the agenda. See you at 6:30 @ OSJ (city hall)
